A LaFayette man, who is a convicted felon, has been charged with child molestation.

Authorities arrested 36-year-old Randy Lamar Alexander of Cedar Street Thursday morning and charged him with child molestation and enticing a child for indecent purposes.

Alexander, who recently moved from Whitfield County, served 12 years for armed robbery, records show.

LaFayette police Capt. Stacey Meeks said Alexander molested a 6-year-old girl, who told her mother about the molestation.

Authorities interviewed the girl at the Child Advocacy Center in Fort Oglethorpe. “During the forensic interview the child disclosed further information that led authorities to believe the incident was valid and substantiated the charges,” Meeks said. “She gave a very detailed account of the incident.”

Detective Darin Kelley conducted an interview with Alexander, who initially denied doing anything to the girl.

On Feb. 6, as Alexander was about to take a polygraph test in Rossville, he confessed, Meeks said. “Once he confessed, he made statements that he might try to harm himself,” Meeks said.

Alexander was transported to a local hospital for a mental evaluation and released the next day into the custody of the Walker County Sheriff’s Office.
