Community holiday functions
A live auction will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the Chickamauga Public Library. Proceeds will support library programs. Auction items were donated by area merchants and include a stove from Roper, gift cards, jew-elry, dance lessons, hand bags, a fruit basket, flowers and other items.
Walker County Emergency Services will offer a free class, “Preparing for a safe holiday,” for all ages, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Dec. 6. The class will be held at Fire Station #1 in Rock Spring, in front of Georgia Northwestern Technical College. Pre-registration is required to ensure adequate course materials. Berry College Theatre Company’s annual Christmas show is “Uh Oh, Here Comes Christmas” beginning Thursday, Dec. 6. The play is also a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Santa will available for photos at no extra charge. The play is family-friendly, but more suited to older children. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6, 7 and 8 with two matinee performances at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8 and 9. Reserved tickets are $15 and include a catered dessert. If no dessert is desired, admission is $10. The Tabernacle Christmas Market will be held from 6-10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Rossville Baptist Tabernacle Fel-lowship Building, 101 Hooker Road, in Rossville (two blocks west of Rossville Blvd. and Gordon Avenue traffic light at the Georgia/Tennessee state line). There will be live entertainment, a bake sale and refreshments. Vendors in-clude Scentsy, Pampered Chef, Dove Chocolates, Advocare, Celebrating Home, Jewels4God, Mary Kay Cosmetics and It Works.
Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a Holiday Open House at the Cra-vens House on Lookout Mountain . The Cravens House will be decorated in a manner similar to the Civil War era. This holiday event will take place Friday, Dec. 7, and Dec. 14. Tours of the house will be conducted every 30 min-utes beginning at 6 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. Reservations are required due to capacity limitations. “The Nutcracker” will be performed by Chattanooga Ballet and the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra at the Tivoli Theatre Friday and Saturday, December 7-8, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. Call 423- 265-0617 for ticket in-formation.
The Ensemble Theatre of Chattanooga (ETC) will perform an original piece, “Gods & Disasters,” Dec. 7-16; Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 6:30 p.m. Performances will take place in the St. Andrews Center, 1918 Union Avenue in Chattanooga. The Santaland Diaries and Season’s Greetings, two holiday pieces by popular humorist David Sedaris will be held on the CircleStage at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m., now through Dec. 8. The Chattanooga Theatre Centre is located at 400 River Street, Chattanooga, on the NorthShore. The Scenic City Chorus will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Walker County Civic Center off Highway 27 in Rock Spring. General admission is $10. Children younger than 12 will be admitted free.
The LaFayette Optimist Club is hosting the first annual Reindeer Run, a 5K Fun Run/Walk & 1 Mile that will take place Saturday, Dec. 8, beginning at 9 a.m. at Joe Stock Memorial Park in downtown LaFayette. A Victorian Christmas will be presented by the Victorian Christmas Guild in downtown Summerville from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9. A Christmas tour with a costumed narrator will be at each decorated window to explain how the scene would fit into the Victorian Era. The Victorian Christmas Guild is a non-profit group that work together with volunteers to bring the Victorian Christmas to life by decorating the windows in downtown Summerville. Along with the tour there will be a Victorian costume contest, games, prizes, food, and musical entertainment. A Victorian Santa also will be in town for pictures. Walker County Schools’ Smith Planetarium will be open to the public on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2:30 p.m. The program entitled “Season of Light” is about Yuletide customs, seasons, solstice celebrations, and the centuries-old traditions of bringing light to a cold and dark time of year. The planetarium is at 409 Pond Springs Road south of Chicka-mauga. No admission is charged for public programs.

A Santa’s Workshop will be held inside of the Ronald McDonald House (in Chattanooga) from Dec. 10-24 for families to choose gifts for their seriously sick children without having to spend much time away. Groups and individuals around the Chattanooga area are collecting items from Santa’s Wish List (available at rmhchattanooga.com) to stock the Workshop in full by December 10. Child-friendly activities and Santa appearances
“Enchanted Evening” will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the Chickamauga Public Library. Come hear read-ings of “The Polar Express” and “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” sit with Santa (personal photos welcome), and enjoy cookies and cocoa. There will be an auction at 6:30 p.m. Items are donated by local merchants, including Roper, Chickamauga Florist, Chickamauga Drug Store, Bank of Chickamauga, Shop-Rite, The Melon Patch, Chap-man’s Jewelry, Joy’s Barber Shop, DanceSport Studio, and Whitfield Oil. Donations are still being accepted. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Chickamauga Public Library.
Hutcheson Medical Center invites the Northwest Georgia community to the hospital’s 28th annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Thursday, Dec. 6. The event will begin at 5 p.m. in the hospital lobby and feature family-oriented events such as a children’s crafts area, holiday carols, and a visit from Santa. The highlight of the evening will be the an-nual lighting of the tree atop the hospital.
The City of LaFayette Christmas Parade 2012 will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 . Participants will line up for the parade at 4:30 p.m. The parade route starts at 512 South Main Street (Ace Hardware) and travels north on Main Street, through the square, turning left onto Margaret Street to the LaFayette Sixth Grade Academy parking lot to disband. The City of LaFayette’s annual “Amazing Christmas” light show will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, following the parade, and will continue through Jan. 2, 2013, at Joe Stock Memorial park. The synchronized musical light show is held from 6-10 p.m. nightly through most of December. Tune to FM 89.5 to hear the music played in the light show. The City of LaFayette will host a traditional and large-scale Lionel model train and village display inside a deco-rated Chattooga Academy/Gordon Hall. The display coincides with the “Amazing Christmas” light show from 6-10 p.m., Dec. 7 through Jan. 2, 2013.
Kids, get your list ready! Santa Claus is coming to First Volunteer Bank in Fort Oglethorpe from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 and again on Friday, Dec. 14.

The Rossville Public Library will host a Family Movie Night on Thursday, Dec. 20, from 5-7 p.m. Join us for a funny animated movie that reveals the answer to every child’s question: “So how does Santa deliver all those pre-sents in one night?” The answer: Santa’s ultra-high tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. This movie also has a funny dysfunctional family, an unlikely hero and an urgent mission that must be completed before Christmas morning. Rated: PG Running time: 97 Minutes.

The Chattooga High School Chorus and Ensemble will perform at Lyerly United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. Dr. Jay McNeal is the pianist and Jason Hall is the chorus director. The Salvation Army has coordinated a free public Christmas concert as a way of saying “Thank You” to the commu-nity for its outpouring of support this season. “Ring the Joyous Bells, A Gift of Christmas” will be presented on Dec. 9 , at 5 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 401 Gateway Avenue, in downtown Chattanooga.
