According to the Ringgold Police Department:
Rodney Darryel Roberts, 47, Tomeka LaShona Thomas, 32, and Gail Renee Hughley, 54, all of Alabama, were arrested on Tuesday, Nov. 20, on charges of burglary and entering an auto.
Roberts garnered additional charges of criminal attempt to commit theft, loitering and prowling, and giving a false name or address to law enforcement.
Thomas and Hughley have been released from jail on bond, while Roberts remained in jail Wednesday morning, Nov. 28, with a bond set at $4,500. Although a bond has been set for Roberts, he is not eligible for release due a hold being placed on him by the Columbus, Ga., police Department for an outstanding aggravated assault warrant.
Officers were dispatched to Yates Wrecker Service at 38 Candy Lane in Ringgold after receiving a complaint that the three suspects were attempting to steal a wrecker parked in front of a trailer on the lot.
“Mr. Yates told Catoosa (County) dispatch that he could see somebody in his large wrecker via a camera he was watching online,” officer Tom Evans said. “Upon arrival I made contact with the three offenders and Mr. Yates, who confirmed that he had seen someone in the wrecker on his web cam.”
The offenders stated that a Bobtail tractor belonging to Thomas had broken down the week prior, and that it was at another lot for repairs, while her trailer was being stored at Yates' lot, reports show.
“Thomas stated that she had traveled to Ringgold with the other two subjects from Alabama to pick up the Bobtail and retrieve the trailer,” Evans said.
When the trio arrived at the lot, they found that the large wrecker was blocking the trailer they had come to get.
Yates stated that he often intentionally parks his wrecker in front of stored trailers to prevent similar occurrences and thefts from taking place, reports show.
“After seeing that the trailer was blocked, both Hughley and Thomas made entry into the wrecker and searched for the keys,” Evans said. “After several minutes, they located the keys in a cup holder and started up the wrecker. While attempting to figure out how to get the vehicle in gear, Yates showed up, with me responding shortly after.”
Thomas stated that she planned to move the wrecker and so that she could gain accessibility to her trailer.
She also told Evans that she was going to place $425 in cash under Yates' door for payment, reports show.
Yates stated that Thomas' total bill amount was $600.
The three offenders were placed under arrest, at which time Roberts began giving false information to officer Brittany Gilleland.
“When officer Gilleland asked for Roberts' information, he gave obvious signs of deception such as stammering when asked for his name, and stating that he didn't know his social security number,” Evans said. “He also stated that he was 41 years old despite being born in 1965.”
After the trio was transported to Catoosa County jail, officer Gilleland was contacted by the jail in reference to the automated fingerprint response for whom she thought was “Quinton Roberts.”
“His fingerprints had identified him to be wanted out of Columbus, Ga. for aggravated assault, and his real name to be Rodney Darryel Roberts,” Gilleland said. “Roberts was listed as having multiple aliases, which is why his actual date of birth is not known at this time.”
