The Ridgeland High School Folk Arts Festival will be held on Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., combining traditional art forms with musical performances and snack foods.
Worth Peppers is a senior at the school and is organizing the event as part of the traditional senior project that is customary prior to graduation.
His concept is derived from a student that held an art showcase of their work at the school in 2010. Peppers wants to expand the idea for more of his fellow art students and gain technique and appreciation from local folk artists who have been invited to the event.
He began to appreciate art while at Chattanooga Valley Middle School, becoming more of a hobby for him than when he was a young child filling coloring books.
Peppers may follow in art teacher Erika Couey’s footsteps, becoming an art teacher or possibly a music teacher, as he has first-hand experience benefiting from a mentor.
He hopes to continue to develop as an artist and one day help teach the next generation of artists.
Art students have spent weeks preparing for the festival, with each creating at least 10 display items for sale.
The traditional artisans at the event will include a blacksmith, quilters, photographers, painters, potters, storytellers, poets and other craft-makers.
Each of the art students plan to create at least 10 items for the festival.
A suggested $20 donation by each vendor will benefit the school’s visual arts program, with vendors keeping their remaining sales from the show.
