LAFAYETTE, Ga.— Candidates trying to land jobs in Washington this fall are arguing over what parts of government they would cut if elected.

In Georgia's mountains, a school bus driver is out to eliminate the post she is trying to win.

Ales Campbell, a 47-year-old mother of four, is running for "sole commissioner" of rural Walker County, 446 square miles of Appalachian foothills and valleys just south of Chattanooga, Tenn., where Confederate flags, hand-drawn signs for boiled peanuts and men in overalls aren't uncommon sights along winding roads with names like "Straight Gut" and "Hootie Hoo Holler."

It is one of the rarest political jobs in the U.S. One person—without a board or commission—runs the whole county government.

If we want a Board of Commissioners,do we need to elect Ms. Campbell to get a referendum?

Bebe is against it, so yes.

I will not vote for Ms. Campbell nor anyone else who has zero experience, and zero knowledge of how a county Government works. I believe her whole " five man board" running platform is just that. It's the only viable platform she could choose to win votes. I don't believe she ever intends to really pursue a " five man board". Voters, educate yourselves.

You have a right to your vote, but she will pursue a board. Whether it can come to a vote, and whether Walker County will accept it, is another thing. Bebe's decision NOT to lose her job is selfish, when there has been a strong showing of doing away with the sole commissioner position. Bebe said that Ales will most likely not pursue a board because the money is good. Perhaps not everyone is as greedy as Bebe and her $105,000/yr salary ...

The writer lives in Atlanta, so yeah, he's been south of the Mason Dixon line. Also, I live in WC and they sell boiled peanuts down from my house, with a hand painted sign, I see confederate flags daily, and overalls. And if the fact that we have a highly antiquated form of government doesn't make us a laughing stock, nothing will.

So now you know what outside investors see. Come on down to Mountain Cove Farms and look at our barn, ya'll!!!

If you don't like the perception, change it. Or turn it into something good.

If the people of Walker want a multi commission system, let them have it. That's a different fight. Bebe is pissed that anyone opposes her, and that's not how Democracy works.

From the outside in, we look ridiculous. Bebe is a fossil fighting evolution. That kind of thinking will never be good for those who are on the outside, wanting to do business with us. Something IS going to give.

Is this whole commisioner issue basically "do you like a King (Queen), or a representative form of govt?"

Can one person rule a growing county fairly and adequately, or do you need wards or something like that with people charged with looking out for the interests of those that put them in charge(the commoners)?

Be careful what you wish for as you may get it. Reading articles and websites I see that Ales is trying to be all things to all people of Walker County.

Multiple person commission? I agree with IrishRed below.

I don't think I want to vote for someone who is trying to "get rid of the position and hold a referendum to make a multiple person commission. What if the referendum fails and we are left with someone who has no experience running anything. I'm sure she could sign up Dr. Shaw who was defeated but we don't want him running it either. If you have multiple commissioners, you also run the risk of paying a group of people who will fight with each other and nothing will get done. Just food for thought.

You had that the first 4 years her Majesty run the county. If not for her compadres helping her to start with she would have been seen for what she really is.

Thanks Bernard22. I used to live in a County where we got rid of County Commissioners because they got a lot of money for doing nothing. Would not work here because you have too many unincorporated areas.

I sort of agree with Frankenchrist. Maybe you need to have reps to help make decisions. What is good for Rossville is not necessarily good for LaFayette or Chickamauga and vice versa.

Wow. Just...Wow. It's amazing what a fresh pair of eyes can see when they examine this situation without being co-opted by the Bebe regime. She comes off looking arrogant, condescending and entitled. Maybe the Journal piece will open the eyes of the folks that were sitting on the fence.

HUMPH! Makes the people of Walker County sound like backwoods hicks. I am quite sure the writer of this article has never been south of the mason dixon line!

Men in overalls and hand drawn signs for boiled peanuts sounds good to me. Would you rather live in South Central L.A. I think decent people are drawn to a simple way of life. Now we are left with fixing our country, starting with our county.Just my opinion.
