The City of Chickamauga announces that a survey of its historic resources will be conducted beginning this month.

“The completed survey and report will assist the City of Chickamauga with the protection and preservation of its rich diversity of historic resources. The survey field data will be collected starting in September, and the final report should be available in July 2013,” said city councilman Jim Staub, a member of the City Historic Preservation Commission. “The $4,200 grant provided by the National Park Service and administered through the Georgia Historic Preservation Division is supported by $2,800 of city funding.”

The city has contracted with Atlanta Preservation and Planning, L.L.C. (APPS) to conduct a survey of 300 historic resources constructed prior to 1972.

The survey will focus primarily on properties west of the Chattooga-Chickamauga Railroad right-of-way and will include residential properties, commercial properties and public properties. Much of this area was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

Laura Drummond will serve as the principal APPS representative conducting the survey, which will include physical descriptions and photographic documentation of each resource. The data collected will be entered into a public record database that is administered by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Division.

A public meeting to define the benefits of the survey as well as identify data collection methodologies will be conducted at the Chickamauga Civic Center behind the Chickamauga Public Library on Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. All interested residents are welcome.
