On Friday, Nov. 20, Boynton Elementary hosted a Parent Luncheon for all fourth graders and their families.

Students in Nancy Masengil’s and Deanna Baker’s class decided to do something special for their guests to celebrate the Thanksgiving season. Before lunch, they also had a Publishing Party to share their completed written work. Each student presented a speech of thanks to the crowd of family and friends. Not only did this activity provide students the opportunity to practice writing standards, but it also encouraged them to really think about all that they have to be thankful for. Additionally, this was the first time many of these children had ever spoken publicly, which is another standard for fourth grade. Parents were proud of their children’s written work and their ability to speak to a crowd. Parent, Chris Carpenter, commented, “I am really impressed that all of these kids were able to stand up and read their speeches to a crowd of adults and classmates. I don’t think I could have done that when I was nine years old!”

Deanna Baker added, “We are very proud of their courage to stand in front of a crowd and speak. But we are equally proud of the character that each of our students demonstrated through their speeches. Many gave thanks for their families, for God and the Bible, for our world and for our sol-diers who work to keep America safe. I love projects that allow our students to learn important academic skills while also enriching their character.”
