The Scenic City Youth Football League games scheduled to be played Saturday at Ridgeland High School on Sept. 26 have been moved to Hutcheson Memorial Field in Rossville.

With the weatherman calling for thunderstorms and the present condition of the Ridgeland playing surface, Panthers' head coach Mark Mariakis and Rossville Athletic Director Stump Martin reached an agreement Thursday night to move the games.

“Hutcheson Memorial Field isn’t in the shape I would like for it to be for six games,” Martin said. “Nevertheless, with the rain we’ve had in the past week and the possibility of not playing at all, it’s the next best thing. I urge people to bring their chairs because the stands are not big enough to handle the crowd.”

Fans and teams will enter Hutcheson Memorial Field through the south gate.

Martin said the Rossville Bulldog teams would return to Ridgeland on Oct. 10 for homecoming festivities.

“I felt it is very important that these games are played with the number of games that have already been postponed,” Martin said. “We’ll make the best of this situation with your help.”

The stands were plenty large enough until the Walker County School system, in their infinite wisdom, chose to tear down two-thirds of them (reportedly because they were unnecessary). They stretched from endzone to endzone until around 2000 or 2001. Then they failed to properly fix the one-third of the visitors stands they had left when the stands needed repair. Hutcheson Memorial Field was in excellent shape three years ago, back when it was properly taken care of. It may have not been the best field around, but it was Rossville's field and it was certainly playable. I haven't taken a look at it since, as I shudder to even think of how it has been treated.
