The Calhoun Yellow Jackets, one of the top track programs in all of northwest Georgia, flexed their muscle this past Friday as both its boys’ and girls’ teams won the annual Gordon Lee Invitational.
The Calhoun boys finished the seven-team meet with 131 points. LFO followed with 110 points while Temple was third with 87 points.
Host Gordon Lee was fourth (62), LaFayette fifth (51), Adairsville sixth (46) and Dade County seventh (8).
Oddly enough the Calhoun boys captured first place in only two of the 16 events, but placed at least two athletes or teams in the top six of 11 individual events.
LFO took the top spot is six events while Temple grabbed first-place points in five.
Armuchee had two first-place finishes. Walker County’s lone first-place points came from Brandon Self who won the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet-6 inches, besting teammate Spencer Tinsley by two feet.
In the girls’ competition, Calhoun amassed 124 points, 23 more than second-place Temple. LFO with 66 points was third.
LaFayette was fourth (64), Gordon Lee fifth (59), Adairsville sixth (51), Bremen seventh (16) and Dade County eighth (9).
Temple won six individual events compared to five for Calhoun.
LaFayette won two events. Sarah Lee Kelley took the 3200 meters with an impressive time of 13:16, 36 seconds faster than her closest competitor.
Jessica Gaddis won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 19.18 seconds, 27 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
