Robert Doss, 82, Kingston


Robert William Doss of Kingston died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008 at his residence. He was 82.

He was retired from Tom Burns Buick as body shop manager and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he received a Purple Heart. He is remembered at the 23rd Street Flea Market as The Tool Man for 18 years. He was a member of the East Floyd Lodge #728 F & AM and the Alhambra Shrine.

He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Linda Hooper.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Duncan Doss of Kingston; sons, Robert David Doss of Tennessee and Robert William Doss of Bremen; daughter, Joan Huck of Seattle, Wash.; stepdaughters, Debra (Gary) Orr of Ringgold, and Annette Ellen McMurray of Chattanooga, Tenn.; stepson, Johnny (Annette) Duncan of Rome; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services: Monday, Dec. 1, at 1:30 p.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. Jim Smith officiating. Dorothy Gitgood, 72, Ringgold


Dorothy Irene Gitgood of Ringgold died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008. She was 72.

She was raised in Pikeville, Tenn., and lived in the North Georgia area since 1964. She was a member of Grand Center Baptist Church. She loved being a housewife and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Hattie Wheeler; her husband for more than 56 years, Charles Gitgood; sisters, Christine Grier and Pauline McMillian; brother, David Wheeler; and son-in-law, Kenny “Fat Boy” Card.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Bonnie Gitgood of Ringgold, James and Kathy Gitgood of Rossville; daughters and son-in-law, Sue and Lebron Brown and Terrie Card, all of Ringgold; brother, Everett Wheeler of Georgia; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Annie Hewitt, 87, LaFayette


Annie Lee Hewitt of LaFayette died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008. She was 87.

She was born in DeKalb County, Ala., to the late Van and Nancy Whited. She retired from Walker County Board of Education as a cafeteria worker after many years of service, and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Hewitt; sister, Lucille Long; and brother, Carl Whited.

Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Lee Hewitt, Stephen and Virginia Hewitt, all of LaFayette; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Don Watts of LaFayette, Helen Cooper of Resaca, Joyce White of LaFayette; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

James McCoy, 95, Louisville


James Edwin McCoy of Clarks Mill Road in Louisville died Tuesday evening, Nov. 25, 2008 at the Old Capitol Inn in Louisville following an extended illness. He was 95.

He was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late James Alton McCoy and the late Blanche Eleanor Nash McCoy. He was the husband of the late Zelma Raley McCoy. He was a retired loan administrator for the Farmers and Home Administration. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church and a member of the Cochran Lions Club. He was a former resident of Cochran and LaFayette.

Survivors include daughter-in-law, Harriett McCoy of Baxley; four grandchildren, James McCoy of Jacksonville, Matthew McCoy of Savannah, Thomas McCoy of Baxley, and Amy Brewer of Hazlehurst; three great grandchildren, Jesse Blanton, Jacob Blanton and Kathryn Brewer.

Elmer Young of Rock Spring died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008. He was 88.

He was born in Murphy, N.C., to the late Acy and Nancy Young. Elmer retired from Synthetic Industries after 15 years of service, and was a member of Noble Church of God.

Kenneth Hale, 72, Rossville


Kenneth George “Soapy” Hale of Rossville died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008. He was 72.

He was born on Lookout Mountain, Ga., to the late George B. and Mildred Lucile Fowler Hale. He was a graduate of the Rossville High School Class of 1954. He was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church in Chickamauga. He was a longtime member of the Rossville Lions Club. He was the former general manager of The Busy Shopper in Fort Oglethorpe. He was the former owner and operator of Hale’s Used Cars and was currently co-owner of Hale’s Power Sports in Fort Oglethorpe. He is remembered for his love of family, church, community and close friendships.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Hale of Rossville; son and daughter-in-law, Kenny and Sharon Hale of Rossville; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Tim Duncan of LaFayette; grandsons, Matthew and Derek Hale; granddaughter, Kasie Duncan; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Helen Parker of LaFayette died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008. She was 88.

She was a member of LaFayette First Baptist Church. She was retired from the Walker County Board of Education.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Maudie Belle Parker; brothers, Robert Irvin Parker, and Vernon L. Parker.

Donnie Mae Pilgrim of LaFayette died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008 at Shepherd Hills Nursing Home. She was 102.

She was born in LaFayette to the late Pink and Rebecca Tate. She volunteered for the Red Cross, and the senior Citizen Center, serving food for many years. Donnie enjoyed working in the yard, gardening, making any kind of crafts, and traveling. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in LaFayette.

Deborah Davis, 54, Ringgold


Deborah Darlene Sampley Davis of Ringgold died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008 at a local hospital. She was 54.

A lifelong resident of the North Georgia area, she was a former employee of Hutcheson Medical Center and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Fort Oglethorpe. Deborah was a Mary Kay Cosmetics salesperson and a very devoted and loving wife and mother.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Sampley.

Winnie Hartman of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008. She was 89.

A native of Rosalie, Ala., she was a member of Chattanooga First Church of the Nazarene and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Alma Stallings; loving husband, Eugene W. Hartman; son, Tommy Hartman; granddaughter, Lisa Harper; sisters, Gertrude Keith and Gladys Callahan; and brother, Orville Stallings.

Mike Buffington, 70, Flintstone


Mike Buffington of Flintstone died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 at home. He was 70.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga-North Georgia area. He attended the Fort Oglethorpe Congregation of Jehovah’s Witness, and was a former electrician at Flexible Foam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James C. and Mary Miller Buffington; one brother, John W. Buffington; and one sister, Mary Ann Cunningham.

Virgie Lee “Bailey” Burkhalter of Ringgold died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008. She was 83.

She lived in Ringgold for the last 25 years and was of the Church of God faith. She worked as a nurse’s aide for more than 35 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lude and Myrtle Mae Bailey; husband, Fred Burkhalter; daughter, Carole Bartlett; one grandson and one great-granddaughter; and three sisters.

Frances Virginia Carroll of Warren, Mich., died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008. She was 67.

She was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tenn., before moving to Michigan in 1967.

She was preceded in death by her father, Buster Suttles; stepmother, Low Ellen Suttles.

Chrishanda Dearing, 26, LaFayette


Chrishanda “Chrisey” Lynn Dearing of LaFayette died Nov. 20, 2008. She was 26.

She was born Oct. 25, 1982 to the late Jeffrey Wayne Dearing and Nelda Paulette Dearing. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Patricia Ann Dearing and Bobby Joe Dearing.

Survivors include her sons, Tony Coleman Ramey and Auston Dearing of LaFayette; sisters, Elizabeth Dearing of LaFayette, April Dearing of Chattanooga, Tenn.; brother, Anthony Dearing of LaFayette; aunts, Debbie Howatson, Mary Resson, Velins Rosson, Lynn Crowe and JoAnn Wiley; great-aunts, Lois Allene Jones and Dorothy Houghey; boyfriend, Lamar Abbott; and several cousins.

Robert Dunn, 90, Rossville


Maj. Robert L. Dunn, USAF (Ret.) of Rossville died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008. He was 90.

A veteran of three of the armed forces, Navy, Army and Air Force, his first military hitch was with the U.S. Navy from 1936 to 1940. The day following Pearl Harbor, he volunteered as a U.S. Army Air Corps flying cadet. Maj. Dunn won a commission in 1942 after graduating from the Army Signal Corps School at Fort Monmouth, N.J. He served in the Southwest Pacific during World War II and wore a Silver and Bronze Star on his Southwest Pacific Campaign Ribbon. At the beginning of the Korean War, he again volunteered to serve his country. Other overseas assignments included the United Kingdom and the Azores Islands. Following his retirement from the armed forces in 1963, Maj. Dunn was active in the Rossville Exchange Club, having served in all offices of the club. On several occasions, he was named Exchangite of the Year. While serving as district direc-tor of the Exchange Clubs of Georgia, he was the recipient of the Outstanding District Directors Award. He was very active in the Alhambra Shrine Temple, serving as captain of the marching patrol for three years and he organized and founded the Alhambra Temple Legion of Honor. He received the Alhambra’s Certificate of Merit and the Alhambra Temples Merit Award. He was also a life underwriter representing several major companies and held memberships with several organizations including life member of the Retired Officers Association, charter member of Local Chapter of Retired Officers Association, life member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 95, emeritus member of Rossville Masonic Lodge 397 F&AM, Charles Martel Commandery No. 29, Royal Arch Mason Rossville No. 149 and Scottish Rite of Free Masonry Valley of Chatta-nooga. He was a lifelong member of the Rossville First Baptist Church and the Niskern Sunday School class.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine P. Dunn.

Survivors include sister, Blanche Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn.; niece, Paula Donna Swafford of Ringgold; and nephew, Robert Dennis Weaver of Asheville, N.C.

Jo Willems McCarver of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Nov. 20, 2008. She was 69.

She lived in Orlando, Fla. for most of her life before moving to Chattanooga in 1984, and was of the Baptist faith. She was the property manager for Country Aire Apartments for the last three years, and always went through life doing things “her way.” She was a very giving and caring person who loved her children, grandchildren, Jada and Sugar.

Survivors include her daughters, Norma Perich of Rossville, Tammy Gant of Ringgold; and four grandchildren, David Perich Jr., Amanda Perich and Trevor and Tyler Gant.

Iula Johnson Smith of Rossville died Saturday Nov. 22, 2008 at a local hospital. He was 82.

A life-long resident of the North Georgia-Chattanooga area, she was a former employee of Laco Sportswear and of the Church of God faith.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Smith; parents, Charlie and Susan Turner Johnson; two sons, Sonny and Jack Smith; grandson, Jerry Allen Smith; and several brothers and sisters.

Bonnie Ann Smith Williams of LaFayette died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 at a local hospital. She was 63.

She was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia-Chattanooga area. She was a former employee of Hutcheson Medical Center. She was of the Church of God faith, and helped with the Down Home gospel singings in LaFayette.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Williams; parents, John and Annie Dodson Smith; daughter, Anita Williams; and grandson, Brandon Williams.

David Edward Willis of Ringgold died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008 at his residence. He was 64.

He retired after 30 years of service as a U.S. Navy master chief store keeper. He was a decorated Vietnam veteran and a lifelong member of the VFW. He was of the Baptist faith.

Mary Payton, 74, Chickamauga


Mary Sue Payton of Chickamauga died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008. She was 74.

She lived in the Scottsboro, Ala., area for most of her life, before moving to North Georgia in 2005, and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe and Louise Bearden; daughter, Rita Ward; grandson, Jeremy Benson; and father of her children, Fred Evans.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Sherry Evans of Chickamauga; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara Jean and Tommy Owens, Gaynell Evans and Brenda Evans, all of Chickamauga, and Deborah and Thomas Williams of Trenton; brother, Ray Bearden of Scottsboro; sister, Nell Hopkins of Smyrna, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Louise Ella Rush of Ringgold died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008. She was 62.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Ida (Walker) Rush.

Franklin Wilson, 97


Franklin Bell Wilson died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008 in Trenton. He was 97.

He served during World War II in the U. S. Navy as a chef, which led to a career as a baker until retirement at Colonial Bakery in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was a lifelong member of Second Cumberland Presbyterian Church in East Lake, where he served as a deacon and music director. He also attended First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga. He was a former resident of Rosewood Assisted Living Facility in Fort Oglethorpe. He was a wonderful family man, a Christian friend, and possessed a wonderful sense of humor until the very end. He will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Wilson; and daughter, Zelma Faye Morris.

Survivors include his son-in-law, Ronald Foy Morris of Rossville; granddaughter, Deborah, husband, Jeff McKaig of Rossville; great-granddaughter, Amber Victoria McKaig, of Rossville; brother, David Wilson, Rossville; nephew, Dave Wilson, of Hollywood, Calif.

Clarence Charles Wooten of Fort Oglethorpe died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2008 at his residence surrounded by his family and friends. He was 82.

Born Jan. 6, 1926 in Fort Payne, Ala., to the late Henry Miles and Samantha Mildred Wooten, he was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, having served in World War II in the 308 Bomber Wing and was a retired paint retailer.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Lillie Bryson, Launa Yerbey, Virdest Mullens and Zettie Ray Burton; and brothers, Gordon and Gathel Wooten.

Survivors include his sister, Janice Lively of Flintstone; several nieces, including Janet Wooten of Fort Oglethorpe; several nephews also survive.

Richard Arp, 72, Fort Oglethorpe


Richard Lebron Arp of Fort Oglethorpe died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008 at a local hospital. He was 72.

He served for three years in the U.S. Army. He retired from Combustion Engineering after 30 years of service and was a member of Boilermakers Union Local 656. After retirement he worked at Ace Hardware in East Ridge, Tenn., for five years. He was a loving husband, father and avid Georgia Bulldogs fan and was of the Baptist faith.

Marshall Heatherly, 67, Ringgold


Marshall Van Heatherly of Ringgold died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at a local hospital. He was 67.

He was a lifelong resident of Catoosa County and was of the Baptist faith. He was a well-known area textile machine parts salesman. He was a volunteer at the Boynton Recreation Park, Tiger Creek Gym and Woodstation Gym, working with the youth. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, bowler and race car fan and loved to watch Little League baseball.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fletcher and Minnie Heatherly; and brothers, Richard, Harry, Eugene and Ralph Heatherly.

John (Jack) Cornett Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Friday, Nov. 7, 2008 at a local hospital. He was 81.

Born Nov. 17, 1926 in Twin Branch, W.Va., to Daniel C. and Caroline (Callie) Martisha Cornett Johnson, Jack attended Rossville High School and McKenzie School of Business. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. For many years he was an optician with Fashion Opticians. He retired from Highland Opticians in 1990. He was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the McAllister Bible Class and an ordained elder of Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a 50-year member of Crawfish Springs Lodge 300 in Chickamauga.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Susan Kay Johnson Hedgecoth; grandson, John Michael Green; sisters, Minnie Johnson Barton, Ruby Johnson Murray; brother, Finley Dan Johnson.

He was an avid fisherman. To the best daddy and husband in the whole world we love you very, very much and you will always be in our hearts.

Peggy Anne Brown, a lifelong resident of Ringgold, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008. She was 59.

She was a pharmacy technician working with Hutcheson Medical Center for 37-plus years. Peggy was a member of Rock Spring Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, James W. Duncan.

Roy Scruggs Jr., 84, Fort Oglethorpe


Roy G. “Papi” Scruggs Jr. of Fort Oglethorpe died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008. He was 84.

Papi was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., to the late Roy and Agnes (Exum) Scruggs. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army, receiving a Bronze Star along with several other ribbons and medals. Papi retired from RDC after 55 years of service, and was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, and a faithful member of Parkway Baptist Temple in Fort Oglethorpe.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Scruggs.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene York of LaFayette; sons, Dewayne Wallace of North Carolina, and Charles Wallace of South Carolina.

Memorial service: Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
