Carol Childress, 63, Rossville
Carol Jean Childress of Rossville died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at a local hospital. She was 63.
She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga, Tenn., and North Georgia area. She was retired from Olan Mills after 35 years of service and was very active at Delray Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Barney Eugene Samples.
Survivors include her loving husband of 43 years, Rev. Ronnie Childress; mother, Mary Belle Newton McClain of Rossville; she loved as her children, Helen and Ray Harp of Rossville; sister, Darlene Voiles of Rossville; brother, Michael Broome of Chickamauga; several nieces and nephews.
Services: Saturday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at Delray Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Childress officiating. Burial: Lakewood Memory Gardens South. Lena Doyle, 88, Woodstock
Lena Josephine (Jones) Doyle of Woodstock, formerly of Walker and Catoosa counties, died Thursday, March 13, 2008. She was 88.
She was born in Rock Spring to the late Roland and Jimmie Scott Glenn Jones. She retired from Fort Oglethorpe Elementary School, where she served as school secretary for more than 20 years. Her grandfather was one of the original settlers in Walker County in the early 1800s. The roots of her family are in Rock Spring and she will join her husband of 60 years and several generations of the Jones family in Rock Springs Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Clyde Doyle.
Survivors include her son, David Doyle of Woodstock; daughter, Patricia Morgan of Dunlap, Tenn.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Bobby Fowler, 76, Rock Spring
Bobby Gene Fowler of Rock Spring died Thursday, March 13, 2008 after a long illness. He was 76.
He was born in Chickamauga on April 17, 1931, the middle child of the late Pascal and Beulah Autry Fowler. He attended Gordon Lee High School and Edmondson College of Business in Chattanooga, Tenn. After joining the U.S. Air Force in January 1951, he served during the Korean War, stationed at Mount Laguna Air Force Base near San Diego, Calif. During his three years of service, he was promoted to the rank of master sergeant and was entitled to wear the Korean Conflict ribbon. After his discharge from the Air Force, he returned to work at E.I. Dupont Co. in Chattanooga, where he was employed for 33 years before retiring in 1982 from the companys laboratory as a lab technician specialist. He served as a deacon and had served as the former chairman of the Deacons, Sunday school superintendent, Business Committee chairman and on the Pastor Search committee at Burning Bush Baptist Church. He also served as chaplain for Jenkins Chrysler and Dodge in LaFayette. He was a kind and loving man who enjoyed his faith, church and family. He was a patriotic American who cherished his flag and country. My father taught us the value of persistence, hard work and most importantly the unconditional love of a parent. He was a man among men, according to his partner in Christ, Colin Crosen.
He was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Cline Fowler, who died Sept. 19, 1979; son, Paul Douglas Fowler, who died on Labor Day in 2005; sister, Lily Neblett.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Joan Wardlaw Fowler of Rock Spring; grandson, Michael Alexander Fowler and his wife, Jill Little Fowler; granddaughter, Jessica Holli Gable and her husband Roone Gable; two great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Grace Maples and Collier Luke Walls Gable; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Joyce Fowler; nieces, Patricia Neblett, Debbie Garret, Stephanie Cline; nephews, John, Carl and Pat Neblett, Robert Fowler and Michael Douglas Fowler.

Charles McDaniel of Rock Spring died Wednesday, March 12, 2008. He was 68.
He was an active member of Peavine Baptist Church and the co-ed Sunday school class.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Nelle McDaniel; sister, Martha Bible.

Nellie Inez Johnson Wooten Smith of Lookout Mountain died Wednesday, March 12, 2008. She was 87.
She was born Feb. 1, 1921 in Alabama to the late Newton and Mary Barnette Johnson, but lived in the North Georgia area for most of her life. She was a member of Moore Road Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters; grandson, Charles Hartline; first husband, John Henry Wooten; last husband, George Smith.
Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Dorothy Hartline of Lookout Mountain, Nellie and Aubie Joiner of Trenton; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren.

James Maurece Jimmy Whittenbarger, formerly of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Friday, March 7, 2008 in Ft. Pierce, Fla. He was 65.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Howell Whittenbarger; sons, Lamar Whittenbarger of Springfield, Fla., Reece Whittenbarger of Chattanooga; daughter, Desiree Whittenbarger of Hillard, Fla.; four stepchildren, several grandchildren and step-grandchildren; stepfather, James L.J. Moon of Harrison, Tenn.; sister, Patricia Pursley of Rock Spring; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jackie Dykes, 57, Summerville
Jackie Dykes of Summerville died Tuesday, March 11, 2008. She was 57.

W.H. Hester, 86, Ringgold
W.H. Pete Hester of Ringgold died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at his residence. He was 86.
He was a native of Cairo, Ga., but lived in the North Georgia area for most of his life. He was a self-employed farmer and shaving hauler for many years and a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served during World War II. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, June Brown Hester; parents, Hansel and Pearl Black Hester.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Black Hester of Ringgold; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Debbie Hester of Ringgold; stepson and daughter-in-law, Roger and Janice Cummings of Rossville; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Bill Hilling of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Kaye and Donald Gassett of Ringgold; four step-grandchildren.

Mary Lee Fricks Hill of Rock Spring died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 surrounded by her loving family. She was 90.
She was born Nov. 20, 1917 to the late Judge Morris Fricks and Jetty Pearl Robinson Fricks in Walker County. She was a member of Valley Head Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her son, Johnny Patrick Hill.
Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Charley J. Marcell Gene Abbott of Rossville died Tuesday, March 11, 2008. He was 64.
He was born in Walker County to the late Horton and Mary Alice (George) Abbott.

Larry Eugene Behner of Rossville died Saturday, March 8, 2008. He was 57.
He was a native of Cumberland County, N.C., had lived in Orlando, Fla., and lived in the North Georgia area for the last eight years. He was an Army veteran having served two tours, one in Korea and one in Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Behner and Jean Cathers Behner.

Rodney Boling, 41
Rodney L. Boling, formerly of Ringgold, died in Mount Juliet, Tenn. He was 41.
He was a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., but lived most of his life in Ringgold and LaFayette. He was co-owner of Mr. Transmission in Dalton and Hixson, Tenn. and had also worked for Newton Mitsubishi for several years. He loved owning his own trucking company, R&B Trucking in LaFayette, and also in Mount Juliet, where he moved in 2004.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Stephanie Diane Boling; father, William Sonny Boling; brother, George L. Boling.
Survivors include his son, Steven L. Boling of Ringgold; mother and step-father, Linda and Clarence Seals of LaFayette; step-brother, Daniel McKenna of Spring Hill, Fla.; mother of his two children, Linda Boling Acuff of Ringgold; several aunts, uncles, cousins and lifetime friend, Jim ODonnell of Ringgold.

Daniel J. Dan Donahoe of Centerville, Ohio, died Thursday, March 6, 2008. He was 67.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, American Legion Post No. 598 and the VFW. During his working career he was employed by GMAC-EDS, where he was a financial specialist.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Donahoe.

Eugenia Hawes, 78, Ringgold
Eugenia Jeanie Baxter Hawes of Ringgold died Monday, March 10, 2008. She was 78.
She was born in Eton to the late Luke Crittenden and Molly (Middleton) Baxter. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ringgold and was the Battlefield Womans Golf Club champion for seven years.
She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her loving husband of 55 years, Roy Hawes; son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Pam Hawes; daughter, Lynn Hawes; granddaughter, Christi Hawes, all of Ringgold; brothers, John Baxter of Ringgold, Bud Baxter of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sister, Doris Harris of Ringgold; several nieces and nephews.

Gloria Howard, 78
Gloria Nash Howard, formerly of LaFayette, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 in Bakersfield, Calif., one week before her 79th birthday.
She was born in Atlanta, the youngest of seven children in a wonderfully close-knit family. Her career path as a social worker involved opportunities to serve in various areas including the Child Welfare Division for Fulton County, Homes of St. Marks Adoption Agency in Houston, Texas, Tri-County Memorial Hospital in Fort Oglethorpe, Moccasin Bend Psychiatric Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Northwest Georgia Mental Health Center in Fort Oglethorpe. An accomplished professional, she made a lasting impression with her bright humor, warm personality, and enormous capacity for caring.
Survivors include her sisters, Arlene Hargrove and Gwen Hames of Atlanta; four children, Charles Comfort (Maxine) of Taft, Calif., George Comfort (Jenni) of Elkton, Md., Jim Comfort and (Denise) of Washington, D.C., Mary Newman (Dennis) of Katy, Texas; and eight grandchildren who were the light of her life, Tyler, Tucker, Corey, Cameron, Chase, Joshua, Kayli and Greyson.

Tommy Farr, 63, Rossville
Tommy Joe Farr of Rossville died Sunday, March 9, 2008 at a local hospital. He was 63.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga, Tenn., and North Georgia areas, where he was a member of East Ridge Christian Church. He was retired from Farr Cars of Dalton, which was owned and operated by his family for more than 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Theresa Farr; son, Michael Lane Farr; grandson, Cameron Moss-Farr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hershel Watkins; three brothers; three sisters.

G. Paul Van Dusen, Avon Park, Fla.
G. Paul Van Dusen of Avon Park, Fla., formerly of LaFayette, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008 at Florida Hospital Medical Center in Sebring, Fla.
He was a World War II veteran. He was a First Class Gunners mate in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Bradford as a plank sailor. He put the ship in commission and took it out of commission. He was in nine major battles in the Pacific, including Okinawa. The ship was severely damaged by a kami-kaze at one point and was returned to Brimington, Wash., for repairs and then returned to battle.
He moved from Iowa to LaFayette in 1978 to become city electrical superintendent, where he served until he retired in 1989. He received the Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen award in the 1980s. He later moved to Avon Park, where he resided until his death. His wife still resides there. He will be remembered for modernizing the citys electrical facilities and upgrading the efficiency of the department. He was an avid golfer, who could be found on the city golf course most every weekend. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be sorely missed.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanie of Avon Park; son and daughter-in-law, Paul A. and Cathy Van Dusen; grandchildren, Kris and Beth Van Dusen of Atlanta; daughter and son-in-law, Dottie and Robert McFadden; grandchildren, Jamie and Valerie McFadden; great-grandchild, Katie McFadden of LaFayette; brother, Frank Van Dusen of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.
His remains were cremated and interred in the Chattanooga National Cemetery on March 3.

Debbie Greene of LaFayette died Saturday, March 8, 2008. She was 45.
She was a member of Old Way Baptist Church.

Maxine Helton, 79, Lookout Valley
Maxine Elizabeth Calvin Helton of Lookout Valley died Thursday, March 6, 2008 following a brief illness. She was 79.
She was born Oct. 30, 1928 to the late Bruce and Catherine Cavin. She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, Tenn., and a longtime member of Lookout Valley Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed gardening and hiking and was a member of the Chattanooga Hiking Club and the Dahlia Society. She also volunteered at Reflection Riding Aboretum. She was a loving, nurturing wife and mother; she most valued the years she spent raising her four children. She also loved her role as grandmother to her 10 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Barney William Helton; brother, Cullen Calvin; sisters, Tommie Christian and Christine Hickey.

Clyde Ingle, 55, Ringgold
Clyde K. Ingle of Ringgold died Friday, March 7, 2008 with his family by his side. He was 55.
He lived in the North Georgia area for the last 20 years. He was a long-time member of Oakwood Baptist Church. He graduated from Tyner High School in 1971. He attended Tennessee Tech and later graduated with two Associates degrees in Criminal Justice and Fire Science from Chattanooga State. He started his years of community services with the Tri-Community Fire Department. He retired from the Chattanooga City Fire Department after 24 years of service. He continued serving his community as a volunteer with Catoosa County Fire and Rescue. He was a director of the Catoosa County Emergency Management Agency as well as a deputy Coroner for several years. He lived a wonderful life of service and enjoyed helping others.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Shot Morris Ingle.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 33 years, Deborah Ingle; daughters, Angie (Mark) Trentham of Ringgold, Kim (Todd) Bennett of Tunnel Hill; three grandchildren, Graham, Gabe and Garrett Trentham; mother, Rose Ingle; brother, Clay (Caroline) Ingle; sisters, Bren (Ron) Luke and Dottie (Chris) Willmore, all from the Chattanooga area; several nieces and nephews.

Thomas Veryl Morrell Jr. of Fort Oglethorpe died Saturday, March 8, 2008, at a local hospital. He was 53.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga, Tenn., and North Georgia areas. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church where he was an AWANA leader. He was also a mentor at Cloud Springs Elementary School.

Walter R. Rocky Beaver of Hollister, Fla., died peacefully at his residence Thursday, March 6, 2008. He was 79.
He was born in Apison, Tenn., was a former resident of St. Augustine, Fla., and had been a resident of Hollister for the past seven years, coming from Ringgold. He was a retired general contractor. He enjoyed fishing and taking care of his horse Sonja. In his earlier days he enjoyed playing golf. He was a caring and considerate person who lived life on his own terms and who was proud of his Native American heritage.

She was a 1945 graduate of Central High School and in 1989 and she was the oldest member of her graduating class at Chattanooga State. Gifford Williams, 91
Gifford Elizabeth Little Williams died Thursday, March 6, 2008 at NHC in Fort Oglethorpe. She was 91.
She was a native of Johnson City, Tenn., and was a resident of the Ringgold and Boynton communities for 52 years. From 1947 to 1951 she and her husband served as missionaries in Africa (Benin City) with the Sudan Interior Mission Board, N.Y., and later joined Baptist Mid-Missions, Cleveland, Ohio. They were married 67 years. She loved gardening and cooking, always sharing them with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. J.B. Williams, on Jan. 11, 2004.
Survivors include her four children, Judith Anne Copeland, (Dr. Kenneth R.) Copeland of Leighton, Ala., Marjorie Williams of Cleveland, Ohio, James B. Alton Edwards Jr., 30, Chickamauga
Alton Aundre Andy Edwards Jr. of Chickamauga died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008. He was 30.
He was born Dec. 20, 1977 in Fort Oglethorpe. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, worked at Crystal Springs Print Works and was a 1997 graduate of Gordon Lee Memorial High School, where he lettered in football. He also loved fishing and NASCAR.

Emma Ruth Nunley of Ringgold died Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at a local hospital. She was 86.
She was retired from Memorial Hospital after many years.

James Pagleno Sr., 72, Rossville
James A. Jim Pagleno Sr. of Rossville died Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at his residence. He was 72.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga, Tenn., and Rossville areas and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and the Harvesters Sunday school class. He was retired from AT&T with 44 years of service and was currently employed with Choo-Choo Materials. He served on the executive board of CWA Union Representatives, was a counselor for United Way and was an honorary member of the Tennessee General Assembly. He served as Past Master and Past Secretary of the East Lake Masonic Lodge No. 698 F&AM, Past High Priest of Mount Moriah No. 95, Past Illustrious John Bailey Nicklin Chapter No. 49 and Past Commander of the Chattanooga Commandry No. 38. In addition to having received KYCH, he also was a member of the Alhambra Temple, served as Past Secretary and Past Captain of Hillbilly Clan No. 81 and was Past President of the Southeastern Hillbilly Association and a member of the O.E.S. He was commander of York Rite, a member of the Scottish Rite and was also honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernesto and Edna Pagleno; birth mother, Billie Irene Hyde.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Marlene Marty Pagleno; six children, William Ernest (Lois) Pagleno of Chattanooga, James Michael Pagleno of Chattanooga, Richard Lyle Pagleno Sr. of Rossville, Michael Scott (Debbie) Pagleno Sr. of Fort Oglethorpe, Angela Susan Suzi Wheeler of Rossville, James A. She lived in the North Georgia area for most of her life and was a member of Charity Baptist Church. She loved gardening and flowers and was employed with Wal-Mart in the garden department for more than four years. Her passion in life was her family and her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rupert and Mary Whittemore; husband, Robert Alfred Taylor; sister, Anniece Daugherty.

Vickie Nicole (Nikki) Carroll of Rock Spring died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008. She was 16.
She attended LaFayette High School, where she was a junior, a member of the Drumline and a member of the Hosa Club. She also attended Community Baptist Church in Rock Spring.

Robert Hellmann, 73, LaFayette
Robert Henry Hellmann of LaFayette died Monday, March 3, 2008. He was 73.
He was born Oct. 30, 1934 to the late Kurt and Grace Hellmann in Pittsburgh, Pa. Robert Bob also lived in Athens, Savannah and Columbia, Md. He retired from Roper Corp. with 20 years of service, where he worked as a business team leader. He was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church, where he was a small group leader, was a longtime Sunday school teacher at LaFayette First Baptist Church and was a Korean War veteran with the U.S. Navy. He loved golfing and was a proud and loving grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Hellmann; grandchildren, Brent Jackson and Logan Teague.

Timothy Lebron Smith of Ringgold died Saturday, March 1, 2008. He was 16.
He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., and was a lifelong resident of Catoosa County. He attended Ringgold High School, where he was a sophomore. He enjoyed time on his computer with myspace and runescape. He attended Gospel Way Baptist Church in the Graysville community.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Ernest E. and Grace Smith; grandparents, John Arthur and Barbara Olene Daugherty; uncles, Ernest Lebron Smith and Troy Leon Jones.

Robert Richard Ashley Jr. of Rossville died March 1, 2008 at Shepherd Hills Nursing Home. He was 81.
He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, Tenn., and the North Georgia area. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and retired from Cen-tral Soya Manufacturing Co. following several years of service. He was a member of Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of the Friendship Class.
