LaFayette officials have decided not to pursue a proposal to redesign the downtown square.

Because so many downtown business owners did not support the proposal, the city will not actively pursue the re-creation of the Square at this time,” Catherine Edgeman, LaFayette Main Street and economic development director, said Wednesday in a written statement. “If something substantial changes in the future, the Historic Preservation Commission may ask to revisit the issue at that time."

The commission had proposed redesigning the square, which is on North Main Street (U.S. 27 Business), by returning it to the way it looked in the 1950s. At that time the square included a small park in the center and traffic flowed around the park. Under the redesign plan, the park would have a green space and monuments to attract more walking traffic.

The city’s decision to abandon the plan comes as welcome news to many downtown business owners on the square who voiced their opposition during a meeting Monday.
