Battlefield Farmers Market near Rock Spring has opened for its second season.
Building on last years success, the Farmers Market has expanded to include more farmers from the area. And most of the farmers from last year have returned.
This year there is an even wider selection of fresh locally grown food available at the market.
Battlefield Farmers Market is on U.S. 27 at the Walker County Civic Center, about a mile north of Rock Spring and three miles south of Chickamauga Park. The market is open each Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon and Wednesday from 4-7 p.m., rain or shine.
Farmers from a six-county area surrounding Walker County bring fresh vegetables and fruit, grass-fed beef in frozen cuts, local honey and fresh-baked bread and desserts.
The market provides local farmers an opportunity to sell their produce and makes local food available in the area. Locally produced food is much fresher than produce that is shipped long distances and then warehoused. Most produce at the market is only a day or less from harvest. Really fresh produce is more nutritious and flavorful.
The market attracts shoppers from all over. I drove all the way from East Brainerd so I could buy fresh, good tasting vegetables, said Don Northcutt, one of the shoppers. I was surprised and delighted to find so much to choose from. Ill definitely be back, he added.
Shoppers at the market are also able to find varieties of produce no longer available in supermarkets, like cornfield beans and heirloom tomatoes. Another advantage of shopping at the Farmers Market is the ability to buy in any quantity, enough for one meal or in large volumes for canning or freezing.
Battlefield Farmers Market continues to provide North Georgia residents with high quality, farm-fresh produce at reasonable prices.
For more information on buying or selling at the market, contact Alex McGregor, market manager, at (423) 886-6743 or email mktmgr@battlefieldfmkt.org.
