Last Saturday many people awaited this year’s opening of the Battlefield Farmers Market, only to be disappointed when they pulled into the Ag Center at the Walker County Civic Center.
“We had more people than vendors,” David Matteson of the Young Farmers Association said.
Only four vendors were able to show up to the opening day, but Matteson counted as many as 350 customer vehicles that came to the market.
“The problem is I’ve got (vendors) ready, but their produce is not ready,” Matteson commented.
Matteson said that many vendors’ produce wasn’t ready to be sold because of the May frost that killed many plants and set the farmers back several weeks.
“The last time it (a May frost) happened was in 1982, so nobody was prepared,” Matteson said.
This Saturday, more vendors are expected to come. Matteson expects them to bring squash, cabbage, zucchini, and onions.
Also tomatoes and beans should be available, according to Matteson, who anticipates a full house that day.
Also, local Mennonite gardeners are expected to bring homemade jams, jellies and pies as well as any extra produce from their gardens.
