James Jackson, 77, Chickamauga


James Emory Jackson of Chickamauga died Wednesday, July 28, at his home. He was 77.

He was born Nov. 2, 1926 in Summerville, the son of Charlie and Fannie Jackson. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Chickamauga.

During a long and interesting professional career, he was first associated with Crystal Springs Bleachery as a machinist, then Cobble Brothers and the Tuftco Co. He then became the founder of Jackson Machine Co., in Chickamauga in 1971, and in 1980 merged with the Card Monroe Corp. to form the Jackson Plant in Ringgold.

He was a thorough businessman whose ingenuity and ability to work out intricate details led the success of his company. Being a close observer he quickly came to know those who worked for him and to recognize their abilities. He was a man of strong individuality, unlimited energy and tireless industry who will be remembered for his unquestioned integrity and professionalism. A man of high principles and marked judgement, he was a silent man to the crowd which hurried by, while ever loyal and completely devoted to his beloved family around whom his life was always centered and to whom his generosity was boundless.

A member of the Walker County community since 1950, he died as he had lived, bravely and patiently, leaving a wonderful memory for his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carole Jeanette Greene Jackson; father, Charlie Jackson.

Ruth Mackey, 77, Flintstone


Ruth Catherine Mackey of Flintstone died Thursday, July 29, at NHC of Fort Oglethorpe. She was 77.

The youngest of five children, she was born Sept. 6, 1926 in Dayton, Tenn., to the late Edgar and Stella Doss Clark. She moved from Dayton at an early age and lived in Tennessee and north Georgia. She enjoyed gardening and sharing flowers with friends, and loved needlework, especially crochet.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David C. Mackey; brothers, Alvin, Ralph and Grady; sister, Alma Brown.

Survivors include her son, Vernon Knight of Chattanooga, Tenn.; daughter, Linda Sjoberg of Chattanooga; granddaughter and her husband, Desiree Youshock and Jonathan of Las Vegas, Nev.; great-grandson, Thomas Erick Youshock of Las Vegas; several nieces and nephews.

Fred Moreland, 85, Lakeview


Fred W. Moreland of Lakeview died Thursday, July 29. He was 85.

He was a lifetime resident of Lakeview and was retired from National Life Insurance Co. He was the former owner and operator of Fred’s Food Market in Lakeview for 30 years. He was a member of Lakeview First Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country during World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Aileen Moreland; niece, Rebecca Turner of Fort Oglethorpe; nephew, Steve Turner of Chattanooga, Tenn.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Paul Ramey of Ringgold, Frances and Fred Ray of Lakeview, Mae McCallie of Lakeview; several nieces and nephews.

Bryant Jones, 88, LaFayette


Bryant “Major” Jones of LaFayette died Wednesday, July 28. He was 88.

He was a member and deacon of Naomi Baptist Church for 35 years, a Sunday school superintendent for several years and a training union director. He taught men’s Bible class for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Hegwood Jones; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Rick Sheehan of South Bend, Ind.; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Esther Jones, Ricky and Donna Jones, all of LaFayette; grandsons, Rev. Bessie Mae Williams Silver of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, July 26, in North Carolina. She was 94.

She was born May 1, 1910, and attended Central High School. She was a Red Cross volunteer at Hutcheson Medical Center for many years. She was a member of South Crest Garden Club, a member of Rossville First Baptist Church and later Brainerd Baptist Church. She was a longtime member of the Joy and Esther Sunday school class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert D. Silver.

Olen Luther Williams Sr. of Fort Oglethorpe died Wednesday, July 28. He was 78.

He was a north Georgia resident for more than 50 years and was a member of Fort Oglethorpe Kiwanis Club and First Church of the Nazarene. He was also a Navy veteran of World War II and the owner of Tri-County Printing.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Williams; son, Donnie Williams; parents, Erman and Maude Williams; son-in-law, Mark Reid.

Annette Agnew, 84, Summerville


Annette Bates Agnew died Monday, July 26, at Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome. She was 84.

The daughter of the late Robert and Eva Bates, she was born Nov. 11, 1919 in Augusta. She graduated from Shorter College in 1941 and married the late Frank Allison Agnew. She moved in 1942 to Summerville, where she became active in the community.

Because of her naturally gifted soprano voice and her love of music, she was active in many community musical programs. She served as president of the Summerville Music Club, created to elevate the appreciation of music and help support extraordinary local talent. She was also an active member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as the choir director, choir member and soloist.

She was also active in community athletic programs. She coached Little League base-ball, taught tennis, and was a friend to the Summerville Recreation swim team.

In addition to her church and community activities, she worked with her husband Frank at Farmers Supply Store in Summerville.

Survivors include her twin sister, Evelyn Magruder of Rome; sons, John and Bob of Summerville, Clinton of Rome; daughter-in-law, Gena Agnew; grandchildren, Clint and Alli-son Agnew; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Services: Friday, July 30, at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Summerville. Burial: Alpine Community Church Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers: First Presbyterian Church Women’s Circle 1 and 2. Jared Bean, 21, Ringgold


Jared Bean of Ringgold died Sunday, July 25. He was 21.

He was a 2001 graduate of Lakeview High School. He attended Dalton State Community College and Northwestern Technical College. He was a member of Parkway Baptist Temple and was employed by Chattanooga Laser Cutting.

He was preceded in death by grandfather, Bill Lyle Sr.

Charles Wilburn Davis of Ringgold died Sunday, July 25, at a local hospital. He was 75.

A native of South Pittsburg, Tenn., he had spent most of his life in the north Georgia area and was a member of Clearview Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 23 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James W. and Lucy Phillips Davis.

Clinton Morgan, 81, Nashville, Tenn.


Clinton Jones Morgan of Nashville, Tenn., died Sunday, July 25, at his home. He was 81.

Born and raised in Greenville, S.C., he was the only child of the late Virginia McClure and Clinton Jones Morgan. He was a 1946 graduate of Vanderbilt University. Like many of his classmates, his undergraduate education was interrupted by World War II military serv-ice. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in December 1942, and was commissioned sec-ond lieutenant in 1944. Stationed in England from February to May 1945 with the Eighth Air Force, he flew 22 combat missions over Germany as a B-17 navigator/bombardier. After he was honorably discharged in September 1945, he returned to Vanderbilt and moved into the Phi Delta Theta house. Many years later he commented this had been “like dying and going to heaven”. His affection for his fraternity brothers lasted the rest of his life. He completed his undergraduate education and graduated from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1950, having served on the Law Review staff. He received the Order of the Coif.

During the next two years, he served as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of In-vestigation in Newark, N.J., and New York City. He moved in 1953 to Rome, where he en-gaged in the general practice of law, specializing in civil litigation until he retired from the firm Jones, Morgan and Byington in 1990. He also served as a U.S. Commissioner for the Rome Division of the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Georgia from 1965 to 1971. He was a magistrate for the Rome Division of the U.S. District Court from 1971 to 1990. He served on the State Disciplinary Board of the State Board of Georgia from its inception in 1946 until 1969. He served as a member of the Floyd County Georgia Selective Service Board from 1962 to 1968, and as chairman form 1960 to 1972. Following the death of his wife, Ann Andrews, he moved to Nashville in 1990 and resumed his legal career as a Special Assistant to the Attorney General for the State of Tennessee from 1991 to 2002. He relished this work as an opportunity to continue gaining legal knowledge and expertise well into his seventies.

He was a keen observer of the natural world who took to heart the responsibility of envi-ronmental stewardship. He generously supported the National Audubon Society, The Na-ture Conservancy, The National Wildlife Foundation and Sierra Club. He was a member of the Belle Meade Country Club.

Mae Pilcher of Rossville died Tuesday, July 27 at NHC of Rossville. She was 85.

She was born in Walker County to the late John Robert and Neller Laura Vanhorn Denton. She was a member of Parkway Baptist Temple in Fort Oglethorpe where she be-longed to the Golden Agers and Ester Sunday school class. The family would like to thank NHC of Rossville for their love and support.

Olen Lovell Bryson of Rossville died Saturday, July 24, at NHC Nursing Home in Rossville, surrounded by his family. He was 72.

He was born April 21, 1932, in Rome.

Duffie Fowler of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Thursday, July 22, in a local hospital. He was 71.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was a Baptist. He was a well-known self-employed boats craftsman in the Chattanooga area for the past 47 years.

William Gudenrath, 94, LaFayette


William Enloe “Bill” Gudenrath of LaFayette died Wednesday, July 21. He was 94.

The oldest of three children, he was born July 25, 1909, in Grant Parish, La., to Frank and Lillian Enloe Gudenrath. He moved to Huntsville, Ala., in 1914, where he attended Wills Taylor Prep School. He also attended the University of Alabama and Georgia Tech, where he majored in textile engineering. He worked for Pepperell Manufacturing Co., and then went to South America with W.R. Grace and Co. He was in Chile for five years. Upon returning to the U.S., he assumed the Gulf Oil distributorship from his father. He retired in 1977.

He was married in 1947 to Jessie W. Fallis, R.N., of Parrott. They were the parents of William Allen Gudenrath and the grandparents of William Field Gudenrath.

He was a member of LaFayette First United Methodist Church, where he served as superintendent of Sunday school for several years and served on several committees. He was an active leader in Boy Scouts, a past president of the Lions Club, the LaFayette Golf Club, and active in many other civic organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie Fallis Gudenrath; son, William Allen Gudenrath of Macon; grandson, William Field Gudenrath of Macon; sisters, Theckla Donsbach Sheffield of Alabama, Lillian Farrell of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews.

Robin Welborn, 34, Ringgold


Robin Eugene Welborn of Ringgold died Sunday, July 25. He was 34.

He was a lifelong resident of north Georgia and was a 1988 honor graduate of Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School. He excelled in athletics, receiving the Bob Davis Athletic Award. He was voted most athletic male student, was a Georgia state wrestling champion, and received several scholarships for outstanding achievement. He received a bachelor of arts degree from University of Georgia in business finance and a degree in industrial hygiene. He had been active in elementary wrestling program and had coached in the athletic programs at Boynton and Ringgold. He was employed with the Social Security Administration in Dalton, and was a member of East Ridge Church of God and Battlefield Golf and Country Club. He was a good man, loving father and precious son.

Survivors include his father, Ronnie Welborn of Fort Oglethorpe; mother and step-father, Judy and Jeff Acuff of Ringgold; daughters, Emma Welborn and Samantha York, both of Ringgold; brother, Donnie Welborn of Ringgold; paternal grandmother, Bonnie Welborn of Fort Oglethorpe; maternal grandfather, Bill Boss of Ringgold; stepbrother, Chad Acuff of Ringgold; stepsister, Melissa Moore of Ringgold; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Charlie Autry, 78, Chickamauga


Charlie Thomas Autry of Chickamauga died Friday, July 16, at his residence. He was 78.

He was born in Walker County to the late Jeff and Nora Wallace Autry. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dot Autry; brothers, Jim, John and Barnett Autry.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Crystal Springs Bleachery after 32 years of service, and worked for the city of Chickamauga for an-other 17 years. He was a member of Old Bethel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

Laura Ballard, 82, LaFayette


Laura Ellen Hunt Ballard of LaFayette died Friday, July 16, in Stone Mountain.

Born April 24, 1922, she was a lifetime LaFayette resident. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John Loew. She was loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.

She was retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority after 37 years of service. She also served as a court reporter for the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit for four years. She was an active member of the TVA Retirees Association and Bicentennial Volunteers. Her retirement was happily spent doing various volunteer activities. She also displayed her handiwork at craft shows for many years. She was a member of LaFayette First Baptist Church.

Sallie Lou Hughes of Chickamauga died Saturday, July 17. She was 88.

She had lived most of her life in the Chickamauga area and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Hughes; son, Billy Joe Hughes; four brothers, John, Mike, Matt and George Plaster; two sisters, Laura Rogers and Jesse Durham.

Survivors include her son, Bobby Frank Hughes of Fort Oglethorpe; two sisters, Ruby Hollandsworth of Florida, Ora Mae Harbert of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Dwayne and Donnie Hughes, Gale Marie Ellis; five great-grandchildren, Whitney, Meagan, Emily and Jackson Hughes, Amanda Thompson; several nieces and nephews.

Services: Monday, July 19, at 1 p.m. at LaFayette Memory Gardens with Malcomb Plaster officiating. There will be no visitation.

E.N. Lowery, 83, LaFayette


E.N. “Ed” Lowery of LaFayette died Friday, July 16. He was 83.

He was an Eastman native and lived in the LaFayette area for the past 25 years. He was owner and salesman of LaFayette Memory Gardens, and a member of LaFayette First Bap-tist Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Cameron Lowery; three children, Danny Lowery of Florida, Linda Lowery of Belgium, Tammie (Chad) Lard and their son, Gilliam Lard, all of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Mary Williams of Cleveland, Tenn., Aline Elliott of Macon; sister-in-law, Winnie Lowery of Maryland; two brothers, Maxwell Lowery of Florida, T.L. Lowery of Cleveland, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

James Morton, 92, LaFayette


James Lee Morton of LaFayette died Wednesday, July 14, at his residence. He was 92.

He was a member of Napiers Chapel A.M.E. Church, and was retired from Central of Georgia Railroad.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Davis Morton.

Survivors include his four sisters, Minnie Lee Powell of LaFayette, Lucy Mosteller of Naples, Fla., Emma Ruth Dixon, Mamie Floyd of Lexington, Ky.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

James S. Mullens, 83, Cooper Heights


James S. Mullens of the Cooper Heights community died Friday, July 16, in a local hospital. He was 83.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired from the U.S. Army as a master sergeant and served as town marshal for White City, Kan., before moving to Cooper Heights in 1972. He was of the Catholic faith and a former member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vi Watkins Mullens.

Survivors include his daughters, Mrs. Harry E. Harper of Hixson, Tenn., Mrs. Hal C. Shook of Cooper Heights; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Services: Tuesday, July 20, at 11 a.m. at Chattanooga Veterans National Cemetery with Rev. R.V. Wells officiating. Pallbearers: Larry Harper, Barri Harper, Mark Shook, Peter Kasper, Terry Ogle, Kernon Cates. There will be no visitation. Dustin Eugene Rector of Dunlap, Tenn., died Thursday, July 15. He was 9.

He enjoyed sports and playing with animals. He was a member of the Awana Club at Ewtonville Baptist Church in Dunlap.

Thomas Neal Springfield of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, July 12, in an automobile accident. He was 64.

He was a Chattanooga native and lived most of his life in the area. He was an Army veteran and former business owner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pink Brown Springfield and Eula Mae Springfield of Rome, Ga.

Survivors include his brother, James B. Springfield of Harrison, Tenn.; sisters, Barbara J. Brewster of Rome, Louise McConnell of Athens, Ga.; daughter, Kimberly Paige Tucker of Cleveland; grandchildren, Caleb Tucker and Bailey Tucker; several nieces and nephews.

Frances Walker, 68, Ringgold


Frances Monteen Jackson Walker of Ringgold died Sunday, July 18, at her residence, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 68.

She was born in Dalton and lived most of her life in Ringgold. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ringgold. She served on the Hutcheson Health Foundation Board for 14 years and the American Cancer Society for six years. She was a Girl Scout leader for several years and helped raise money for the Adult Learning Center in Catoosa County. She was also an avid ballroom dancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe and Edith Crump Jackson; brothers, Bobby and David Jackson; grandsons, William and Scott Walker.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Wesley Walker; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Jerry Harrel of Ringgold; sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky Walker, Jimmy and Renee Walker, Fred and Bambi Walker, all of Ringgold; grandchildren, Brandy Johnson, Amber Walker, Keith Walker, April Walker, Blake Walker, Adam Walker, Kristy Walker, Travis Walker, Amber Harrel, Heather and Scott Perkins; great-granddaughter, Madison; sister and brother-in-law, Maggie and Buell Dunn of Ringgold; brother and sister-in-law, Charlie and Elaine Jackson of Cohutta; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Jackson of Dalton; two nieces and nephews, Lori, Cindy, Ron and Chuck.

Alice Josephine Frost of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Thursday, July 15. She was 55.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was of the Baptist faith.

Evelyn D. Maples of LaFayette died Thursday, July 15, in Hutcheson Medical Center. She was 83.

She was retired from the Walker County Department of Education, serving 28 years as cafeteria manager at North LaFayette Elementary School. She was loved by the children and well-known throughout the community for the tasty meals she planned and prepared. She was an active member of LaFayette Second Baptist Church and a faithful member of the adult choir.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ralph McWhorter Maples Sr.; mother, Carrie Swafford Frye; stepson, James A. “Shakey” Maples.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Clinton Sparks; daughter, Bertha Ann Sparks; several brothers and sisters.

Bertha Mae Partin Holcomb of Ringgold died Tuesday, July 13. She was 84.

She was a lifelong resident of Catoosa County and was employed for many years with McNew Drugs. She was retired from Pro-Golf, Inc. She was a member of Ringgold First Bap-tist Church, where she was a member of the Deborah Sunday school class and the Joy choir, and volunteer for the church clothes closet. She was a member of the American Legion, Catoosa Historical Society, the committee that formed the Ringgold Seniors Thursday Nite Group, the founding committee for the new senior center at Bentley Place, AARP and the committee that put lights at the Ringgold High School baseball field.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Roy R. Holcomb; parents, Marvin F. and Lillie King Partin Sr.; brothers, Marvin Frank Partin Jr., Edward L. Partin.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Gary W. and Connie Holcomb of Ring-gold; grandsons, Jeff and wife Deirdre Holcomb, Rick and Sam Holcomb, all of Ringgold; five great-granddaughters; niece, Gail Lea of Harrison, Tenn.
