Several teams in Region 7-AAAA are putting up strong showing after the first two days in the Georgia Class AAAA State Wrestling Tournament at the Gwinnett Arena.

Northwest Whitfield is third overall with 53 points, just 1.5 points behind second place Eastside. Stockbridge is leading the way with 65 points.

Ringgold is sixth with 46 points while LFO is tied with Starr’s Mill for seventh (44.5 points).

The Warriors put five of their 10 wrestlers – Lee Allen, Joey Halloran, Zack Shaw, Derek Laney and B.J. Rogers – in the quarterfinals with four more in the consolation rounds.

The Tigers have four of their 10 wrestlers – Zack Hopkins, Jonathan Gregory, Jay Brook and Jesse Peterson – in the quarterfinals. Three more are still alive in the consolations.

Senior Alex Hutchinson is the lone Ridgeland wrestler left with a shot to medal at the Class AAAA state tournament at the Gwinnett Arena.

Hutchinson (189) won his opening match on Wednesday, but fell 6-5 in overtime to Alexander’s Nick Barker in the round of 16 on Thursday.

Hutchinson bounced back late Thursday to beat Hillgrove’s Garrett Lester, 8-4. He will wrestle Whitewater’s Henden Debeer on Friday.

Freshman Tommy Jones also won his opening match Wednesday, but was pinned by defending 103-pound state champion Dequan Warner of Southwest DeKalb in his first match on Thursday.

Gordon Lee and LaFayette will take to the mats on Friday. The finals in all classifications are set for Saturday at 7 p.m
