Clara Breeden, 91, Rock Spring


Clara Chesser Breeden of Rock Spring died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008. She was 91.

She was a member of LaCrosse Baptist Church, La Crosse, Fla., and attended Peavine Baptist Church in Rock spring.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Hague Breeden.

Survivors include her three children, Charles Breeden and wife Darlene, Ronald Breeden and wife Paulette, and Kathy Beights and husband James, all of Rock Spring; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren; and siblings Reba Rogers, Retha Gann, Royce Chesser and Earnest Chesser.

Memorial services: Saturday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at La Crosse Baptist Church in La Crosse, Fla. Visitation: Sunday, Sept. 28, from 1-4 p.m. at 3286 Peavine Road, Rock Spring.

Peggie Clarke, 76, Rossville


Peggie Clarke of Rossville died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008 at her home after a long battle with her illnesses. She was 76.

Her loving spirit will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jack Ashton; and several brothers and sisters.

Florrie Ann Heath of LaFayette died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 at Parkridge Medical Center.

She was retired from Catoosa and Walker County Family and Children’s Services. She was a member of Cove Road Church of God.

Randolf “Randy” Thomas Flowers of Tunnel Hill died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008 at his residence. He was 63.

He was preceded in death by his father, Tom Flowers.

Chester Curtis Large of Rossville died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008. He was 93.

He was of Baptist faith and moved to North Georgia in 1957 from Fort Payne.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers and six sisters; and grandchildren, Eric Strickland and Gabriel Harper.

Linda Denny, 64, Rock Spring


Linda “Gail” Strickland Denny of Rock Spring died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008. She was 64.

She was born in Jesup, and resided in Walker County since 1969. She attended Georgia Baptist School of Nursing and was a registered nurse. She had formerly worked at Brunswick Memorial Hospital and was currently working at Tri-County Hospital/Hutcheson Medical Center, where she had for the past 40 years. She was an active member of Center Grove Baptist Church in Rock Spring. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and most of all being a grandmother to her grandchildren, who knew her as “Guinnie”. She was known by her joyous personality and her beautiful smile and hugs she gave.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Florene Strickland.

Survivors include her best friend and husband, Eugene Jackson “Jack” Denny of Rock Spring; father, Elmer Ellsworth Strickland of Hortense; daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Russell Payne of Lebanon, Tenn.; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Teresa Denny of Rock Spring; sisters and their husbands; Jan and Jim Moore of St. Simons, Beth and La Count Smith of Nucla, Colo.; beloved grandchildren, Joshua and Ashley Payne, Austin and Madison Denny; niece, Jeri Foster; nephews, Ian and Ryan Thompson.

Annie “Polly” Matilda Stapp Hodge of Ringgold died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008 at her residence. She was 75.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Albert Hodge; and parents, Jesse and Jessie Byrd Stapp.

Robert Johnson Jr., 60, LaFayette


Robert Alvin Johnson Jr. of LaFayette died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008. He was 60.

He was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area and was of the Christian faith. He was previously employed with Ronile of Georgia as the plant superintendent for more than 34 years, and also worked for Hays State Prison as a correctional officer for a year. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Soldiers and he enjoyed hunting and reading, and loved the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Clara Smith; father, Robert A. Johnson Sr.; son, Cecil Ray “Pete” Studdard Jr.; and grandson, Robert Jeremiah “Frog” Johnson.

Billy Randall Ware of Ringgold died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008 at his residence. He was 51.

A lifelong resident of the North Georgia and Chattanooga Tenn., area, he was a former employee of Hardee’s, where he worked for five years, and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dayton Ware; mother, Ida Bell Shetters Ware Ledford; and brother, David Ware.

Survivors include his three sisters, Judy Lofty of Dalton, Barbara Howard and Sheila Garner, both of Cleveland, Tenn.; five brothers, Mitchell Ware of Tunnel Hill, Harland Ware of Ringgold, Tim Ware and Stacy Ware, both of Cleveland, Tenn., and Robin Ware of Chatsworth; nieces and nephews.

Franklin Davis Jr., 70, Fort Oglethorpe


Franklin “Sam” Davis Jr. of Fort Oglethorpe died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008 at Health Center at Standifer Place. He was 70.

A lifelong resident of East Ridge, Tenn., and Fort Oglethorpe, he was an avid bowler and was a member of the Pioneer Mixed Bowling League at Tri-State Lanes in East Ridge, and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed as a bus driver with Carta for more than 10 years, and was a meat and seafood specialist at The Fresh Market on Gunbarrel Road for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin S. Davis Sr., and Mary Henry Davis; and brother, Emmett Davis.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Doreen Davis; children, Krystal Davis of Fort Oglethorpe, Traci Sadowski of Huntsville, Ala., and Jeff Davis of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; sister, Ruth Citty of East Ridge; several grandchildren, one great-grandson; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mary Beatrice West Carroll of LaFayette died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008. She was 90.

She was born in Monroe County, Tenn., on March 22, 1928, and was the daughter of the late Otis and Julia Langford Kellar.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. J.C. Kellar; son, Sammy Joe Miller.

James Ballinger, 91, LaFayette


James “Bo” Ballinger of LaFayette died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008 at his home surrounded by family. He was 91.

He was born July 16. 1917 in Walker County to the late Joseph and Delia Ridley Ballinger. He retired from Armstrong Carpet Mill, was a mem-ber of Foster Mill Baptist Church, and attended Old Way Baptist Church.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Marie Akins Ballinger; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Carrie Wilson, 80, Wildwood


Carrie Barnes Wilson of Wildwood died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at her residence. She was 80.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga, Pikeville and North Georgia areas. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Elizabeth Terrace Baptist Church, where she taught the Dorcas Sunday school class for numerous years.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Wiley Tribble and Loyd “Red” Wilson; sister, Betty Zent; and parents, Leroy Barnes and Aline Barnes Walker.

Survivors include her son, Don Wilson of East Brainerd, Tenn.; daughters, Diane (Doug) Foster of Wildwood, Darlene (Lester) Hicks of Lookout Mountain; sister, JoAnn (Frank) O’Leary of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Jody Dewayne Leiderman Sr. of Chickamauga died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008 at his home. He was 39.

He worked for U.S. Express as a truck driver for several years, and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Homer Leiderman; and great-grandparents, Maude and Ed Hamilton.

Sue Ann Williams Saldana of LaFayette died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008. She was 61.

She was born in Williamson, W.Va., on Nov. 1, 1946, to the late Ralph Thomas Williams and Gladys Virginia Bowens Smith. She was of the Protestant faith, worked as a nurse at Walker State Prison, loved gardening and music, was a former dance instructor, and spent many hours watching the Home Shopping Network.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Kay Lowe (Sammy) Sartin; two sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Gene Lowe Jr., and Christopher Paul (Terra) Saldana; three grandsons, Kenneth Chandler Sartin, Michael Elijah Sartin, and Christopher Rance Saldana; two granddaughters, Taylor Nichole Lowe and Rhianna Alisa Brown.

Mary Ella Katherine “Kathy” Sandoval of Ringgold died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008. She was 36.

She was employed by Kids Stop Day Care for 12 years, and was a member of Harrison First Baptist Church.

William Rackley, 30, Chickamauga


William Casey Rackley of Chickamauga died Sept. 14, 2008 at his home. He was 30.

Laura Webb, 40, Rossville


Laura Webb of Rossville died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008 at a local hospital. She was 40.

She was a certified paramedic and firefighter in Tennessee and Georgia. She worked with the Chickamauga, Fort Oglethorpe, East Ridge and Walker County Fire Department. She also worked with Grandview, Hutcheson, Chattanooga and Memorial EMS departments. She was a graduate of Gordon Lee High School, where she was captain of the color guard.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Thurman and Irene Lane and Eugene and Lena Wells.

Survivors include her husband, Bobby Webb; parents, David and Betty Wells Lane Sr.; brother, David R. Lane II of Harrison; nieces, McKenzie and Kendall Lane, McKenzie Hill; Louise Pearson of Oak Ridge; numerous beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.

Thomas Clowers, 68, Ringgold


Thomas Curtis “T.C.” Clowers of Ringgold died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 at his home. He was 68.

He as born in Rockwood, Tenn., to the late Arthur Burton and Nina Mae (Early) Clowers. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and worked for Chattanooga Glass for 24 years, and retired from Shaw Industries after 18 years of service. He was a former member of the Salvation Army.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Patricia Little, Betty Jane Clowers; and brother, John Clowers.

Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Hazel (Wilson) Clowers of Ringgold; children, Lisa Clowers of Fort Oglethorpe, Richard Clowers of Rossville, Lillian Garrett of Florida; sisters, Loretta Joyce Graham of Ringgold, Norma Jean Manning of Ooltewah, Tenn.; grandchildren, Amber, Blair, Brandy, Chad Clowers, Curtis Wilson, Laura Lowery, Tiffany and Jason McDonough; great-grandson, Matthew Lee Wilson; uncle, Curtis Early; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Elaine Rollins Jones of Ringgold died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008. She was 86.

A lifelong resident of Ringgold, she was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church for almost 60 years, where she taught Sunday school for more than half a century. Always active in her community, in recent years she worked in the Senior Volunteers program.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edd Rollins and Fannie McKeehan Rollins; husband, Carl W. Jones; brother, Walter Edd Rollins; sister, Mildred Rollins Brown.

Survivors include her daughter, Libby Hullender of Chattanooga, Tenn.; sister, Virginia Denson of Athens, Ga.; four grandchildren, Greg Hullender, Tony Hullender, Jennifer Hullender Holdaway, and Alex Hullender; six great-grandchildren.

Bennie Faye Moore Watkins of Tunnel Hill died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008 at her residence. She was 68.

A resident of the Tunnel Hill area for the past 18 years, she was formerly of West Monroe, La. She was a former employee of Favorite Market where she worked for 13 years, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and a member of Varnell Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd E. Watkins Jr.; and parents, Benton Sr. and Clara Worthy Moore.

Survivors include her daughter, Lisa Watkins Barr of Memphis, Tenn.; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory K. and Kristi Watkins of Byron; sister, Virginia Rawls of Texas; brother, Benton “Joe” Moore Jr. of Fort Necessity, La.; two grandchildren, Pfc. Ralph Williams Sr., 76, Chickamauga


Ralph Dewey Williams Sr. of Chickamauga died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008. He was 76.

He was a Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Korean War. He retired from Van Huesen Co. He loved his family and music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Dewey Williams and Eunice Stephens; grandparents, John and Belle Williams; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Max and Marion Stoker.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Stoker Williams; son, Ralph Williams Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Shannon Craig; grandchildren, Casey, Sissy, Max, John, Katie and Nicky; great-grandson, Payton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert Jr. and Margie Williams, and Rella Stephens, Robert and Levern Stephens; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Max Jr., and Donna Stoker, Earl and Faye Burns, Brenda and Chuck Freeman, Louise “Chip” Stoker; several nieces and nephews.

At his request, he will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held Friday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. at Lou’s Burger on McFarland Avenue in Rossville.
