Polishing, buffing and selling are part of what Daren Headrick does for a living, but you won’t find him at a shoe store — unless it’s virtual.

The 33-year-old Ringgold High School grad has made a career out of marketing and promoting everything from racecar drivers and rock stars to clothing and cats.

Headrick’s latest project has him diving into goo — as in world-renowned rock band the Goo Goo Dolls. Headrick is the co-promoter handling the marketing on the Goo Goo Dolls show coming to the Memorial Auditorium in February.

“Being involved in event marketing is invigorating,” he said. “There’s nothing like planning an event and seeing it take shape. The creative energy and enthusiasm of everyone involved in something so exciting is very rewarding.”

This is not the first time he has been involved with big name celebrities though.

After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in public relations, he went into marketing in the sport of NASCAR and worked with the likes of Jeff Gordon, the Petty family, and other stars of the track.

As Headrick steps into possibly the biggest show of his career as a promoter with the Goo Goos, he says he’s ready.

“I think what drives me is challenge; I like to create things and see them take shape,” he said. “That’s what drew me to marketing and public relations in the first place.

“This is the largest local event that I’ve been associated with in a lead marketing capacity, but I have various other experiences in major events as far away as Japan.”

Rising newcomers Augustana will open for the Goo Goos.

Jared Palomar, who plays keyboard and bass with Augustana, said fans should be in for a good time.

“The tour we did with Counting Crows and Goo Goo Dolls this last summer was the most fun we’ve ever had,” Palomar said. “We’re looking forward to being out with the Goos again.”

Headrick’s inundation into the world of music really started about six years ago when he and a few friends formed the local rock band Atomic Eyes. With spiritually-driven introspective lyrics written by front man Johnny Key and a chemistry that transcended from the garage to the stage, Atomic went from learning to play their instruments to opening for acts like Sugar Ray, Seven Mary Three and Georgia’s own rock legends, Collective Soul, at a music festival in Hawaii. They were also solicited by major labels such as Columbia Records and Warner Brothers, but just as the downturn of the music industry began to surface from online music piracy , the band never inked a record deal.

Headrick’s aforementioned trips to the Far East include managing bands’ tours like Tonic and American Hi-Fi in Japan. He mentions that he wrangled and upgraded Tonic to first class seats on a flight despite his minimal knowledge of the Japanese language.

That’s what Headrick does — a little bit of everything. He now sports his own marketing firm, Spin Concepts, which allows him to span the marketing world from banks to bands.

Locally, you’ve probably seen some of Headrick’s work with Gateway Bank, Ruby’s Warehouse and Favorite Markets — especially online.

“Spin Concepts is a virtual creative agency,” Headrick added. “I don’t have a big office with a large payroll, so I don’t have a lot of overhead. We operate from a SOHO environment, yet I have very experienced professionals working with me, both locally and around the world. We are a value-based company that is positioned to serve small to medium-sized businesses through graphic design, Web development, and various other marketing-related services.”
