Mildred Barnes, 86, Cuthbert


Mildred Bowman Barnes of Cuthbert died Saturday, Dec. 24, at Patterson Hospital in Cuthbert. She was 86.

She was born April 9, 1919 in Ringgold, the daughter of the late Samuel J. Bowman and the late Mamie Pallant Bowman. She attended Tift College, and recieved her bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University, and her master’s degree from Auburn University. She was retired schoolteacher, a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, Cuthbert United Methodist Church and the Cuthbert Historical Society. She was the widow of Rev. Douglas Roger Barnes.

Survivors include a son, Vance Barnes of Cumming; sister, Samie Bowman Nation of Chattanooga, Tenn.

Services: Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. at Cuthbert United Methodist Church with Revs. Thad Haygood and Frank Padget officiating. Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Cuthbert. Visitation: Tuesday, Dec. 27, from 6-8 p.m. at Lunsford Funeral Home.

Maxine Brown, 72, East Ridge, Tenn.


Maxine Brown of East Ridge, Tenn., died Tuesday, Dec. 27, in a local health care facility. She was 72.

She was born in Cherokee County, Ala., and lived in the Chattanooga area for 48 years. She was a member of South Seminole Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Brown; parents, Agnes and John Tucker; brother, Robert Tucker.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Marty and Cheryl Brown of Chattanooga, Tenn.; sisters, Bonnie Smith, Delaine Shaver and Gail Tucker, all of Summerville; brothers, Tom Tucker of Ooltewah, Tenn., Hugh Tucker of Summerville; grandchild, Levi Brown of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

Kathy Leamon of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Wednesday, Dec. 28, at her residence. She was 76.

She was born in Athens, Tenn., and lived in Chattanooga for more than 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Otella Stewart.

Cynthia Lynn Pittman of Ringgold died Saturday, Dec. 24, at her residence. She was 24.

She was born in Dade County, Fla., and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Kimberly Lynn Kennedy; maternal grandparents, Kenneth Ownbey and Ruth McPherson; paternal grandfather, John W. Pittman.

Hattie M. Richardson of LaFayette died Friday, Dec. 23, at a local health care facility. She was 81.

She was a lifelong resident of Walker County and was a dedicated member of Ridgeview Baptist Church in LaFayette.

Paul Alan Stoker of Chickamauga died Tuesday, Dec. 27, at a local hospital. He was 47.

John Tate, 78, Fort Oglethorpe


John Tate of Fort Oglethorpe died Wednesday, Dec. 28, in a local hospital. He was 78.

He had been a resident of north Georgia for more than 50 years. He was a member of the House of Yahweh. He was retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was retired from General Electric. He had been a commander in the Civil Air Patrol and had owned and operated TNT Express at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Georgene Tate; son, John Audley Tate of Hixson, Tenn.; daughters, Gloria Hebert of Louisiana, Donna Burke of Chattanooga, Tenn., Linda Candies of Ringgold, Cynthia Marona of Ringgold, Trudy Coyle of Virginia Beach, Va.; brothers, Steven Tate of New Mexico, Stanley Tate of Wisconsin, Paul Tate of California; sister, Ruth Kimsey of Minnesota; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Martha Hardman, 89, Covington


Martha McElveen Hardman of Covington died Saturday, Dec. 24. She was 89.

She was the daughter of the late Dr. J.M. and Sarah Elizabeth Brown McElveen. A resident of Newton County for more than 50 years, she was a member and past president of Miniature Garden Club of Covington, former president of the Newton County Historical Society, and past regent of the Sgt. Newton Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the second woman to graduate from the pharmacy degree program at the University of Georgia. She was active in women’s activities at First Baptist Church and at the Church of the Good Shepherd.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sally H. and William J. Stanfield of LaFayette; sister, Louise McElveen of Statesboro; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Mamie McElveen of Rincon; grandsons, William Lanier Cornwell, Robert Reese Cornwell.

Ruby Caylor Jasko of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 26, at a local hospital. She was 85.

A native of Maryville, Tenn., she had lived in the north Georgia and Chattanooga area most of her life and was a member of Westside Missionary Baptist Church in Ringgold.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary Jane Abbot Caylor; son, Steve McCallister; sisters, Gertrude Long and Juanita Jackson; brothers, Paul, Cecil and Clyde Caylor.

Stephen Crabtree, 43, Chattanooga Valley


Stephen “Mark” Crabtree of Chattanooga Valley died at his home, Sunday, Dec. 25. He was 43.

He had lived most of his life in the Chattanooga Valley area and was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the Sons of the Confederates and Candlelighters support group.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Crabtree; daughter, Kimberly Smith.

Walter Lee Deems Sr. of Ringgold died Sunday, Dec. 25. He was 88.

He was a veteran of World War II. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star and received a Presidential Unit Citation for action in Bastonge. He was a member of Hill Top Baptist Church, East Lake Lodge No. 698, Knoxville Scottish Rite and the Alhambra Shrine Temple. He was a charter member of the Millwright Local No. 654 in Chattanooga.

Ethel Stallings Gilbert of LaFayette died Monday, Dec. 26. She was 89.

She was a longtime member of LaFayette First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for more than 50 years. She taught the GAs for 30 years, and served on the Benevolent Committee for many years. She was a member of the Daughters of American Revolution for 50 years, and was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was honored as the Walker County Citizen of the Year.

Otis Junior Whitaker of Rossville died Sunday, Dec. 25, at his residence. He was 76.

A resident of the north Georgia area for the past 36 years, he was a member of Shields Baptist Church. He was a former captain with the Rossville Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ina Folks Whitaker; parents, Emmitt Otis and Jessie Grace Welch Whitaker.

Dub Akins, 83, Carlsbad, N.M.


Dub Akins of Carlsbad, N.M., died Wednesday, Nov. 23, at Carlsbad Medical Center. He was 83.

He was born July 14, 1922 to Alfred and Nancy Akins in Chickamauga. He grew up and attended school in Georgia, and then attended Appalachian State University in North Carolina where he earned a degree in physical education. He taught school for one year and later became a semipro baseball player and played with the Carlsbad Potashers.

He married the love of his life, Sandy Anderson, on Oct. 11, 1954. He worked for the IMC potash mines from 1954 to 1962 and retired in 1987 after 25 years from Amax, where he was a face boss. He enjoyed all sports and played football, baseball and basketball in his early years. In later years he enjoyed fishing, bird hunting and yard work.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 34 years, Minnie “Sandy” Akins; four sisters and one brother.

Survivors include his sister, Iris Scoggins of Rock Spring; several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Darlene Carpenter Bullock of East Ridge, Tenn., died Tuesday, Dec. 20, at her residence. She was 72.

A native of Kansas City, Mo., she lived in California, and lived the past 17 years in East Ridge. She was of the Assembly of God faith and a caretaker. She loved her dogs Cricket and Tasha.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Delores Carpenter; sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and George Dewitt; sister-in-law, Lil Carpenter.

Ross J. Burgess of Lakeview died Thursday, Dec. 22, in a local hospital. He was 74.

He had lived most of his life in the north Georgia area, and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean conflict. He had been employed by Combustion Engineering for more than 10 years, and retired while working for Anderson Machine Shop.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Bryan Burgess.

A native of Tunnel Hill, he was born June 5, 1936 to Charles and Pharbia (Edgeman) Clark and came to the area in 1989 from Tampa, Fla. He was an accountant in the real estate business and member of the Floral City United Methodist Church.

Bob Williams, 80, Rossville


Robert Lewis “Bob” Williams of Rossville died Wednesday, Dec. 21, at his residence following an extended illness. He was 80.

He was born April 13, 1925, in Rock Spring. He was the youngest of six children born to the late Carl and Fannie Lupo Williams.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Smith Williams, and siblings, Bess Henry, Wesley, Carl, Wallace and David Williams.

He was educated in Walker County schools, and at age 16 left the family farm on Peavine Road to join the U. S. Navy. His six-year tour of duty during World War II included flying in the South Pacific and serving at Pearl Harbor.

Following his military stint, he was involved in a number of interesting job ventures. He retired in 1987 as general manager from TAC Alloy Co., with 39 years of service in Bridgeport, Ala.

He enjoyed golfing and antiques. He was a member of Newnan Springs United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men’s Club. He also belonged to John Bailey Nicklin Chapter No. 49 R.A.M., Lookout Commandry No. 14 K.T., East Lake Lodge No. 698 F&AM, Alhambra Shrine and American Legion Post No. 214.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Emily Hatton Williams; son, Shane Hatton of Ringgold; nieces, Sammie Leach of Birmingham, Ala., Fran Rand of Atlanta; nephew, Scott Henry of Ringgold.

Dorothy Smitherman, 77, Ringgold


Dorothy Selda Davidson Smitherman of Ringgold died Monday, Dec. 19. She was 77.

A native of Dunham, Ky., she had lived in the Ringgold area for more than 50 years and was a member of Ringgold First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Smitherman.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Gwen Smitherman of Ringgold; three sisters, Joy Rungee of East Ridge, Tenn., Wanda Wooten of Rossville, Betty Lawhorn of Collegedale, Tenn.; one grandson, Dillon Smitherman of Ringgold; many other loving family members and friends.

Services: Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with Dr. Dan Whittaker officiating. Burial: Anderson Cemetery. Visitation: Tuesday, Dec. 20, from 2-9 p.m. and Wednesday until funeral time at the funeral home.

Bobby Taylor, 69, Rossville


Bobby Joe Taylor of Rossville died Thursday, Dec. 15, at his residence. He was 69.

He was a native of Birchwood, Tenn., and lived most of his life in northwest Georgia. He was a self-employed plumber and electrician, and attended Scenic City Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dolly Taylor; son, Bobby Ray Taylor; stepdaughter, Rebecca Henson; sister, Betty Jean Griffin; brother, Rev. Edward Taylor.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Ann Mathis Taylor of Rossville; daughter, Darlene Taylor of Chattanooga, Tenn.; sons, Rick L. Taylor or Rossville, Jesse Taylor of Ooltewah, Tenn., Rick V. Taylor of Cummings, John A. Taylor of Rossville; stepson, Bobby Henson Jr. of Ringgold; sister, Joyce Crutchfield of Rossville; brothers, Claude Taylor of Rossville, Charlie Taylor of Ider, Ala., Gary Taylor of Soddy Daisy, Tenn.; several grandchildren, two great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews.

Services: Monday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with Rev. E.J. Varner officiating. Burial: Lakewood Memory Gardens, South. Oulay Chantharack of Rossville died Sunday, Dec. 11.

Joan Mitchell, 55, Ringgold


Joan Francine Mitchell of Ringgold died Wednesday, Dec. 14. She was 55.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas and was a member of Christ in Action Church, formerly Chattanooga Christian Fellowship. She was a faithful volunteer in her local church and hospital and was a faithful caregiver for eight-and-a-half years for her mother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Evelyn Haynes Mitchell; grandparents, Charlie and Marie Haynes, Maude Elrod; one brother, John Ervin Mitchell.

Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Randy Ball; one nephew, Corey Ball, all of Ringgold.

Terry Norman, 54, East Ridge, Tenn.


Terry Lamarr Norman of East Ridge, Tenn., died Wednesday, Dec. 14, at his residence. He was 54.

A lifelong resident of the north Georgia and Chattanooga area, he was a former employee of the Wheland Foundry where he worked as an electrician for 28 years. He was an employee of Array, where he worked for two years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Jewel McNeese Norman Roach; brother, Robert Norman.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Brown Norman of East Ridge; father and stepmother, Robert “R.L.” and Rita Norman of Rossville; children, Tina Gentry of Fort Oglethorpe, Jennifer Norman and Jeremy Norman, both of East Ridge; two brothers, Ronald Norman of LaFayette, Larry Norman of Ringgold; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Services: Monday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel. Visitation: Saturday, Dec. 17, from 1-9 p.m., all day Sunday, Dec. 18, and until service time Monday at the funeral home.
