The Georgia Northwestern Technical College men’s basketball team added to their 2009 signing class when Kyle Wilson, the all-time leading scorer in Armuchee High School history, pledged to play college ball for the Rock Spring-based school.
Wilson, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound shooting guard, finished his Indians’ career with 1,510 points. In addition, Wilson set another school record with 607 points in his senior season and he hold the single game mark with 51 against Darlington. He was named to the Rome News-Tribune’s All-Area team this past season.
“We moved from the Durham, N.C. area to Armuchee when Kyle was four years old,” said Wilson’s father, David. “The first time he played ball he was three years old and we got him in a four year-old basketball league in Durham. He was smaller than the rest, but just like today, he had no problem getting in there and playing with the bigger kids.”
“From everything I’ve heard from coaches across the region he competes in, his size is not reflective of the play he delivers consistently,” said Mustangs head coach, David Stephenson. “His character and personality will drive him as far as he wants to go.”
Players across the region had to experience Wilson firsthand before they realized his 5-9 frame was a decoy for a monstrous leader on and off the court. He has spent this off-season training with a current Mustang who knows what its like to play against the giants, 5-3 Trion alum and GNTC starter, Dustin Rosser.
“We’ve been playing in Trion when we can with some of the other players in the area,” Wilson explained. “It’s really something I’m excited about. This is a great chance to continue my education close to home, and even take part in something that has my passion, too.”
“This is a quality young man who has led his classmates on and off the court in an honorable way,” said Armuchee head coach Ray Tucker. “He’s a good scorer and does it within the framework of team play.”
Wilson joins Chattooga standout Perie Finley, who recently signed to attend Georgia Northwestern. Another familiar face from Region 7-AA, Dade County center Jesse Moore, has also made the decision to try out for a role in the Mustangs corral.
“It really seems like he’s happy about finding a quality chance to go to college, play basketball, and stay close to home so his family and friends can be a part of it all,” Stephenson added.
