Dear editor:

We are approaching an election on March 19th that is crucial to the well-being of our county. SPLOST (Special Local Option Sales Tax) is a ($.01 per $1.00) sales tax that is shared by everyone who buys goods and services in the county. Catoosa County, the city of Ringgold, and the city of Fort Oglethorpe utilize SPLOST as a primary source of funding for their capital improvement projects.

SPLOST funds are separate from annual budgets. These capital projects such as road and bridge updates, sewer construction, building construction and first responder vehicles are critical to the health and well-being of our citizens.

There are only two options (a) approve SPLOST and help our county move forward (b) do not approve SPLOST and fund these capital projects with property tax increases.

Out of 159 counties in Georgia, Catoosa County ranks at 155 in having the lowest tax millage rate. Let’s keep it that way and raise the funds for these capital projects through SPLOST rather than higher property taxes.
