A number of purchases have been made in the LaFayette area using counterfeit money in recent weeks.

According to LaFayette Police Department:

“We have seen a large amount of (counterfeit bills) popping up in the past month,” police Capt. Stacey Meeks said. “They are being used at various businesses in town.”

The $10 and $20 bills have been used in a number of transactions at a few local retailers.

Meeks could not give further details, since the active investigation is still cross-referencing surveillance video and pursuing leads, which have developed two persons of interest.

Any merchant who suspects they have received counterfeit money is urged to contact detective Wesley Steele at 706-639-1540.

The U.S. Secret Service has a checklist that law enforcement officials use to help businesses be more proactive in identifying phony bills.
