The sign-up event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at VFW Post 4911, 2632 Cedartown Highway.
Representatives from Action Ministries will work directly with veterans who may be eligible to receive U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs funding for low-income individuals and families who are residing in shelters or trying to transition into permanent housing.
“We are really trying to reach out to homeless veterans, including those in shelters,” said Andrell Turner, case manager with Action Ministries.
Help may also be available to veterans facing eviction, Turner added.
According to a press release from Action Ministries, temporary financial assistance may be available to eligible veterans to help with rent, utility payments, security payments, moving costs, childcare and transportation expenses.
Turner said veterans may be eligible if:
They served in any branch of the U. S. Armed Forces, did not receive a dishonorable discharge and have a copy of their DD214, Statement of Service or Veteran ID card; they have recent proof of income or a third-party letter indicating monthly household income that shows they do not make more than 50 percent of the county’s median income; and they are homeless with no permanent residence, staying in a shelter or receiving a hotel voucher. They must have a letter from the shelter, receipt of hotel stay or a statement from a third party to verify housing situation.
Turner said the event is ideal for veterans without computer access or who may need help filling out the necessary paperwork to find out if they are eligible for benefits.
Action Ministries, founded in Atlanta in 1963, is a nonprofit with ties to the United Methodist Church.
