A LaFayette man fled an accident scene while allegedly driving under the influence, police say.

According to Georgia State Patrol:

Robert Edward Beshers was arrested on several charges stemming from an accident on Straight Gut Road at 7:40 p.m. on Jan. 10.

Beshers had been backing a Ford Super Duty truck out of a driveway into the road and struck a Chevy Astro van traveling north, according to trooper Poteet.

He quickly exchanged information with the driver and left the scene. The driver of the van called to report the accident to authorities.

Beshers returned to the accident scene in a different vehicle, with a female passenger, and attempted to assure the driver he would pay for the damage.

The other motorist informed Beshers that law enforcement had been contacted and he left upon seeing headlights approaching in the distance.

He was located minutes later by law enforcement officials near the intersection of U.S. 27 and Ga. 136, according to trooper Poteet.

Beshers declined the field sobriety and breathalyzer tests and was arrested on charges of hit and run, driving under the influence, and failure to yield.
