The council, during its regular monthly meeting Monday, Jan. 14, unanimously approved the May 2 event.
“It's been a great event over the past three years. The turnout has been overwhelming, and we would really like to have the Day of Prayer on the Depot lawn again this year,” Clyde Painter, pastor of Lakeside Baptist Church in Rocky Face, told the council. “The first year the event occurred during a huge trial. The second year it was on the heals of the tornado that struck the city. And last year it occurred while my wife was battling cancer. It'll be a great day for anyone needing prayer.”
May 2 will mark the 62nd annual nationwide observance of the National Day of Prayer, which was made an official day of observance in 1952.
The event will take place on the Depot lawn from noon to 1 p.m. on May 2, with the festivities to be moved inside the Depot if inclement weather arises.
The program will include guest speakers consisting of local pastors, city officials, and military personnel.
The theme for the Nation Day of Prayer is “One Nation Under God.”
