Starting the year off right means having a balanced budget. As many Georgia lawmakers return to their seats in this year’s legislative session, the first order of business is money.

State Sen. Jeff Mullis, a Republican from Chickamauga, said the budget is a constitutional obligation for the legislative body. This year the major undertaking, Mullis said, means finding money to cover the shortfalls Medicaid has left for the state.

“There is a hole in the budget due to Medicaid and we will be making cuts to cover state requirements,” Mullis said.

Mullis represents Senate District 53, which includes all of Catoosa, Walker and Dade counties and most of Chattooga County.

Mullis is a member of the Appropriations Committee, which proposes laws to designate funds for numerous government agencies. The committee approves legislation for a balanced budget of $22 billion. Mullis considers the budget to be the top priority in the January session.

Also expected in this legislative session, which opens Monday, Jan. 14, are tax issues and legislation for jobs.

Mullis said lower taxes and job reform are important factors in boosting the economy.

Added to the agenda is education: “Education is always a priority,” Mullis said.

Mullis serves as a member of the Assignments Committee and the Banking and Financial Institutions Committee. He is secretary for the Rules Committee, ex-officio for the Economic Development Committee, and chairman of the Transportation Committee. (Editor’s note: Mullis is expected to be named chairman of the Rules Committee on Monday, Jan. 14.)
