A 16-year-old female student has been charged with terroristic threats and acts after texting the phrase “blowing school up” to three to five other students at Ridgeland High School Thursday morning, Dec. 20.

The text spread quickly among the student body and parents, Walker County sheriff Steve Wilson said.

The Sheriff’s Office assigned two detectives and nine deputies to the school throughout the day Thursday, investigating the hoax, Wilson said.

Detectives believe the motive behind the text was so the student could leave school early, he said.

The 16-year-old was charged and released to her mother about 7 p.m. Thursday, he said.

She will appear in Walker County Juvenile Court at a later date, he said.
