As the Christmas season approaches consider celebrating the season with a real tree. Using a real tree during the holiday season has been a tradition for many families for more than 500 years.

With several Christmas tree farms in Walker County, you can also support the local agricultural economy. Along with supplying a tree for the season, these local farms provide an environment for the entire family to go out and choose and cut the perfect tree.

For those families planning to use a real tree this Christmas season, there are a few tips you should consider:

· Be sure you are purchasing a fresh tree that will not dry out prematurely. (This is not a concern if you are cutting the tree at a local farm)

· Make a new or fresh cut across the base of the trunk just prior to setting it up so that it will readily absorb water.

· Be sure to keep plenty of water in the tree stand.

· Place the tree away from heat sources in the home to prevent it from drying out or being a fire hazard.

For more information about caring for a real Christmas tree or to learn more about the local Christmas tree farms, call the Walker County Extension Office at 706-638-2458.
