COMMUNITY · Great Britain’s Kenny Herriot is coming to the LaFayette-Walker County Public Library to share his experiences as one of the world’s leading wheelchair athletes on Friday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the LaFayette-Walker County Public Library.

COMMUNITY · The deadline to nominate the Walker County Chamber of Commerce "2012 Small Business of the Year" is at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16. The winner will be recognized at the Chamber's Annual Dinner on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013. The honor is given to a company that demonstrates best practices in business sustainability and growth, commitment to employees and a track record of community involvement. To be eligible, nominees must be a small business (less than 200 employees) and members of the Chamber in good standing as of Oct. 30, with a minimum of one complete full year in business. Chamber members may nominate a business, including their own. Judging will be conducted by the Chamber's Board of Directors.

COMMUNITY · Walker County Farm Bureau is collecting monetary donations until Friday, Nov. 16, for the Georgia Food Bank Association and its seven food bank affiliates to help Georgians in need. COMMUNITY · The Cherokee Regional Library System's 2012 Food for Fines Campaign will continue until the end of the business day on Friday, Nov. 30. Library patrons may “pay” library overdue fines with a canned food item. This will help re-stock food banks in Dade and Walker County. One food can donation removes up to $1 in overdue fines. COMMUNITY · Chattanooga Zoo will hold a Snow Leopard Appreciation Day on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. On this day, six-week old boy and girl cubs, recently named Everest and Maliha respectively by Zoo supporters, will be making their public debut. Snow Leopards are considered a highly endangered species with only 4,000-6,000 remaining in the wild. The Chattanooga Zoo hopes to use this occasion to bring awareness and education to snow leopard conservation efforts both locally and abroad. During Snow Leopard Appreciation Day, visitors will be encouraged to participate in interactive education stations highlighting conservation efforts while watching the cubs frolic in actual snow generously donated by the Tennessee Valley Ice Company. Snow Leopard Day activities are free with Zoo admission.

COMMUNITY · Cloudland Canyon offers hay rides every Saturday now through Nov. 24. Hot dogs, S'mores, snacks and drinks will be sold. Leashed and licensed pets may also ride. Meet at the Interpretive Center. Rides start on the hour from 2-6 p.m. Park entrance is $5. Hay rides cost $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 4 to 12. The park is off Highway 136 near Trenton.

CHURCH · The Bryan College Chamber Singers will present a concert of sacred choral music Sunday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. at LaFayette Presbyterian Church, 107 N. Main Street, in La Fayette. The program will consist of a variety of literature, including classical, spirituals, and gospel selections. The public is invited, and there will be a reception following the concert. The concert is provided free to the community as an outreach activity of the congregation.

COMMUNITY · AARP Tax-Aide, a free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service, is seeking volunteers in Walker County to help taxpayers who are seeking assistance preparing and filing their 2012 tax returns. Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member or a retiree to participate. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers should have some computer experience, such as e-mail and internet browsing. Also needed are volunteers who have management experience. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers receive free IRS-certified tax training and are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses.
