Walker County saw an increase in approximately 800 registered voters between the July primary and the November general election, said elections director Barbara Berry.

A total of 40,336 registered voters were registered as eligible to vote in the Nov. 6 election, 7,445 of which are listed as inactive, or not having participated in elections for some time.

The 800 new registered voters could represent a new member of the community or a long-standing resident declaring a change of address, Berry said.

The numbers, however, still jive with those listed in reports surrounding the primary, which cited approximately 32,000 voters, as that was a list of only active voters, she explained.

More than 7,000 new voters were not registered over the past few months. Instead, those citizens were left out of the active voter list as they have not been participating in elections for many years.
