Roger Lewis Sellers, 68, Tunnel Hill

Roger Lewis Sellers died peacefully at his home after a long and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer early Tuesday morning, October 9, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. He was 68.

He was born on January 12, 1944, in Thomasville. He and his family moved to Ringgold when he was a child and he remained there throughout his life. As a young man, Roger began his working career as a long haul truck driver. Through experience and hard work, he became a respected diesel mechanic. He was employed long term through E.L. Pate Trucking Company and Hasty Trucking Company. He retired in 2010 as owner/operator of Roger Sellers Trucking Company. He was a man of many talents and could do anything from construction to auto/diesel mechanics to problem solving for all who needed him. He was a man’s man and was respected by all. He earned that respect through his highly regarded work ethic and his sense of fairness. His word was his bond.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George William Sellers and Eliza Jenkins Sellers; his first born child, Debbie Sellers; his brother, G.W. Sellers, Jr.; and his sister, Ruth Sellers Coker.

Survivors include his wife and loving companion of 47 years, Louetta Miller Sellers; children, Roger Anthony Sellers, Lisa Marlene Sellers Roche and husband Jim, Ronny Alan Sellers, Stacy Robin Sellers and husband Jonathan; grandchild and light of his life, Christina Alana Sellers; siblings, Sam Sellers and Joyce Sellers Romines; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Sue Goins and Mary Parker, and many special aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Special family and friends who brought daily comfort during this difficult time; Eb Sellers, Billy Sellers, Leon Sellers, Margie Sellers, Ray Sellers, and the late Roy Lee Keeler.

Memorial service: Saturday, Oct. 20, from 1-8 p.m., at 694 Tunnel Hill Road. Abiding by his wishes, there will be no visitation.

Rev. Eugene Harold Coleman, Sr., 68, Rossville

Rev. Eugene Harold “Gene” Coleman, Sr., of Rossville died Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at his residence. He was 68.

He began pastoring following his graduation from Zion Bible College in 1965, and for the past 27 years he has served at East Ridge Christian Church and was the founder of Carpenter’s Cowboy Church in Chattanooga 17 years ago. Rev. Coleman is a third-generation minister and also a veteran radio broadcaster, having worked at WDEF, WGOW, WFLI, and was host of the television show “Coleman & People” for nine years. In the 1970s he served as Press Secretary for George P. Shafran, Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, worked as a National Business Committee Consultant for the Gerald Ford Presidential Campaign in 1976, served as a fundraising consultant for the Greater New Orleans Federation of Churches in 1984, and as the director of Division of Administration for the Louisiana State Medical Society. In addition to his serving as the pastor of Carpenter’s Cowboy Church, he also served as pastoral care provider at Covenant Transport. Through all of his endeavors, he has stated that the five best things he ever contributed to this world were his children. He loved and served God first, followed by his children and his church. You walked with God on earth and your reward is his company in heaven. He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Marvin Harold Coleman.

Survivors include his mother, Hazel Regina Coleman; his children, Kimberly (David) Rumsmoke, Heather Sue Coleman and Tara-Beth Coleman, Gene H. Coleman and Marvin Scott Coleman; step-children, Charity K. Trillet, Jeremy (Patricia) Trillet, Joy E. Trillet, and Amy R. Trillett; brother John A. (Elsie) Coleman; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, four step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Bobby Wayne Hancock, 62, Chattanooga

Bobby Wayne Hancock of Chattanooga died Friday, October 12, 2012. He was 62.

He had lived in the Chattanooga, Tenn., and north Georgia areas for most of his life and was of the Baptist faith. He was an Army veteran and had worked in the construction industry for many years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Hancock and his mother, Jessie Mae Cox.

Survivors include his loving companion, Melvina Bradley; children, Nancy Carlton, Carlene Worley and Floyd, Jamey, Danny, Michael and Roger Bradley, all of Chickamauga; two brothers, James “Mickey” Hancock of Rock Spring and Ray Hancock of Trion; sister, Betty Langston of Chattanooga, Tenn.; numerous grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service: Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. in the United Memorial Gardens in Dalton. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Ola M. Honeycutt, 94

Mrs. Ola M. Honeycutt died October 9, 2012. She was 94.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, William Edward Honeycutt, in October of 1991.

She was a faithful member of Pine Grove Baptist Church in Ringgold; there she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir for many years. She will be remembered for her devotion to her Lord and her family. She was the last surviving child of Burless and Pearl Marona.

Survivors include her sons, Bob (Evelyn) Honeycutt of Lafayette, Bill (Rena) Honeycutt of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Mel (Pam) Honeycutt of Fort Oglethorpe; her daughter, Linda Stutz of Chattanooga; her grandchildren, Tony (Kathy), Terry, Scott (Tami), Lisa (Keith), Cari (Jamie), and LaShawn; her great-grandchildren, Matt, Bryce, Cameron, Zach, Zander, Zevan, and Michael; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Leon Franklin Hise, 86, LaFayette

Leon Franklin “Frank” Hise of LaFayette died Monday, October 8, 2012, at his home. He was 86.

He was born in Chickamauga, December 1, 1925, son of Joseph H. H. “Joe” and Aggie Belle Mullinax Hise.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Robbie Wylene Hise, Ruby Nell Hollis and Sara Jo “Sadie” Day.

Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Mary Lee Martin Hise; daughters, Cindy (Sherman) Gibbs of LaFayette, Sonja (Joe) Morgan, and Sylvia (Jimmy) Bailey, both of Jefferson; grandchildren, Eric (Brandi) Gibbs and Rachael (Jim) Maples of LaFayette, Jim Bailey of Jefferson; and one sister, Marlene (Jimmy) Webber, of Plant City, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Julian and Rebekah Murray; a step great-granddaughter, several nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

Betty Lynn Feagans Whaley Hall, 78, Ross-ville

Betty Lynn Feagans Whaley Hall of Rossville died Wednesday, October 10, 2012. She was 78.

She was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia area. She died peacefully at her home with her family present. She faced illness and death with much grace and dignity, never losing her sense of humor and most importantly her faith. She will be forever in the hearts of her beloved family and friends. She was a member of and baptized at Varnell Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Owen and Ruth Ann Feagans; son, Wilburn Whaley, Jr.; brother, Charles “Buck” Feagans, and her spouse, Earl Hall.

Survivors include her daughters, Connie Ann Whaley (John) Weir of Rossville, Karen Lynn Alderman of Ringgold; grandchildren, April Ann Jackson, Christie Lynn Buchanan, Kelley M. Cox, all of Chattanooga; great-grandchildren, Al-isha Ann Coyne, Joseph Coyne, Jasmine L. Buchanan; great-great-grandchildren, Kandance Cox, Robert Cox, Jr., Kamden Lee Dollar, Ashton Dollar, Tucker Lee Coyne; and she is also survived by her loyal furry best friend, Peanut.

Bill Newberry of LaFayette died Tuesday, October 9, 2012. He was 60.

He was a member of The Cowboy Church of LaFayette.

Donald A. Scoggins, 79, Hixson

Donald A. Scoggins of Hixson, Tenn., formally of LaFayette, died September 18, 2012, in LaFayette Health Care.

He was born in Summerville, February 10, 1933, son of the late Jess and Lois C. Scoggins. He served in the U.S. Marines, and later was employed with Dupont until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Madalyn Martin and Bobbie McKaig.

Survivors include his two sisters, Sible Brown and Rubie McWilliams, both of Subligna; brother, Dale Scoggins of Chickamauga; and several nieces and nephews.

A private service and entombment was in Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Hixson.

John Alton Holsomback, 92, Ringgold

John “Al” Alton Holsomback of Ringgold died Friday October 5, 2012, at his residence. He was 92.

A lifelong resident of the north Georgia area, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served during W.W. II, former owner and operator of White Oak Wood Works and a member of Ringgold First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover Cline and Bertha Lou Pettit Holsomback; brother, Gaston Holsomback; and two sisters, Ruth Worley and Jean Davis.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Gladys Chapman Holsomback of Ringgold; daughter, Donna (Randy) Cochran of Ringgold; son, Mike (Connie) Holsomback of Ft. Oglethorpe; four grandchildren, Reagan Cochran, Brynn Boran, Will Cochran and Jonathan Shattuck; great-grandson, Matthew Shattuck; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services: Monday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m. at Anderson Memorial Gardens.

Tommy Reese Tinker, 81, Flintstone

Mr. Tommy Reese Tinker of Flintstone died Sunday, Octo-ber 7, 2012, at Parkridge Medical Center. He was 81.

He was born May 30, 1931, in Macon, the son of the late Francis Tinker and Hattie Kendall Tinker. He was retired from Central of Georgia Railroad where he had worked as a conductor.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Tinker of Flintstone; children, Mike Tinker of Austin, Texas, Thom Tinker of LaFayette, and Pamela Thrasher of Austin, Texas; sister, Sara Stillwell of Macon; grandchildren, Amber Wilkerson of Athens, Wendy Payne of Jefferson, and Alisha Tinker of LaFayette; and a great-grandchild, Ansley Payne.

At his request, Mr. Tinker will be cremated.

Thomas Eugene “Tommy” Hall of Rossville died Sunday, October 7, 2012. He was 49.

He was a truck driver for Epes Transportation for the past five years, and was of the Baptist faith.

Edna Westbrooks Taylor, 89, Chattanooga

Edna Westbrooks Taylor of Chattanooga died Sunday, October 7, 2012, in a local health care facility. She was 89.

A native and lifelong resident of Chattanooga, she was a well-known citizen’s activist and president of Citizens for Tax Payers Rights. She was also named one of the top 10 local leaders by the leadership foundations and was a frequent caller to local talk radio shows and opinion writer in the Chattanooga Times Free-Press.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Jesse Gerald Taylor; parents, William H. and Lucy Garland Westbrooks; daughter, Elizabeth Susan Taylor; grandson, Steven Taylor, and sister, Jeanne Kettles.

Survivors include her daughter, Doris “Dixie” Smith of Chattanooga; son, Jesse G. Taylor, Jr. of Tacoma, Wash.; brother, William A. Westbrooks and James E. (Louise) Westbooks; sister, Dorothy “Dot” Osbourn; half-sisters, Willene Pearcey and Janey Gouger; half-brother, Chester Westbrooks; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Richard Arlen McClung, 77, LaFayette

Richard Arlen McClung of LaFayette died Monday, October 8, 2012. He was 77.

He was born to the late Lyman F. and Hazel Furby McClung in Harrison W. Va. He attended the Assembly of God Church in LaFayette, and was a veteran, having retired from the United States Army where he received numerous medals including both the Silver and Bronze Stars. He also retired from the Georiga State Department of Corrections.

Survivors include his two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol and Jeff Ferrell of LaFayette and Crystal McClung of N.C.; three brothers, Rusty and Bobby McClung of W. Va. And Randy McClung of Fla.

Graveside service: Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family will meet at the funeral home at 1 p.m. to follow in procession to the cemetery.

J.E. Cook of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at his residence. He was 82.

Herman Lamar Parris, 77, Rossville

Herman Lamar Parris of Rossville died Monday, October 8, 2012. He was 77.

He had lived in the Chattanooga and north Georgia area for most of his life and was of the Nazarene faith. He was an Air Force veteran and was also a truck driver for more than 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cliffton and Verla Mae Parris; wife, Willodene Parris; and two brothers, Tommy and Gene Parris.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 13 years, Louise Woodson Parris of Rossville; daughter, Tammie Smith of Ringgold; four step-children, Rick Collins of Jasper, Debbie Collins of Red Bank, Tenn., Steve Collins of Dalton and Jannette Collins of Harrison, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Braxton and Gracie Smtih; several step-grandchildren and several step-great grandchildren.

John A. Williams, of LaFayette died Friday July 27, 2012. He was 64.

Preceded in death by his parents Alex and Lucille Williams; brother Homer Williams.

Mr. Doyle Lanier of LaFayette died Thursday, October 4, 2012. He was 77.

He was a member of the Second Baptist Church.

“Daddy Doyle” was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret Ann Eaton Lanier; sisters, Mattie Mills, and Darnell Raines; brothers, Donald Lanier, Bud Lanier, and Joe Lanier; parents, Fred and Bessie Tucker Lanier.

Janice R. Eason, 72, Ringgold

Janice R. Eason of Ringgold died Monday, October 8, 2012. She was 72.

She was a member of Fort Oglethorpe Church of Christ. She was retired from the U. S. Attorney’s Office and also Jerry Summers law offices. She was a member of the Mountain City Corvette Association. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her by her parents, Martha and Charles Roach.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Tommy Eason; daughters, Tammy (Rudy) Canales, Jill Davis (Gary Roach); grandchildren, Colby Davis, Trask Davis, and Chloe Canales, Trinity Canales, and Whitney Roach, all of Ringgold.

Pearl G. Satterfield, 98, Rossville

Pearl G. Satterfield formerly of Rossville, died Sunday, October 7, 2012, at her home in Rainsville, Ala. She was 98.

She previously lived in Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, Trenton and Rossville. She was a member of Parkway Baptist Temple.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Clif-ford Goolesby and James E. Satterfield; and a son, Cliff Goolesby, Jr.

Survivors include her two sons, Ronnie W. Satterfield of Chattanooga, and Lonnie J. Satterfield of Ft. Oglethorpe; two daughters, Faye Johnson of Rainsville, Ala., and Mary Rakestraw of Marietta; brother, Howard Gant of Henegar, Ala.; sister, Ruth Satterfield of McCalla, Ala.; 13 grandchil-dren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. William M. (Pop) Scoggins, Jr., of LaFayette died Thursday, October 4, 2012. He was 84.

He was preceded in death by his wife Edna Earl Gray Scoggins. He was a member of LaFayette Second Baptist Church.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Cindy Scoggins of LaFayette; sister, Earlene Ramey of LaFayette; brothers, Buddy Scoggins and Hoyt Scoggins, both of Rome; grandchildren, Michelle Scoggins, Derrick Scoggins, Madison Scoggins; great grandchildren, Murphy Paige Scoggins, Jakob Ryan Scoggins, Marlie Scoggins, Brody Scoggins, Griffin Scoggins; several nieces and nephews.

Melissa Coulter Taylor of LaFayette died Tuesday, October 2, 2012. She was 36.

Mary Gladys Moore, 96, Lookout Mountain

Mary Gladys Moore of Lookout Mountain, the Hinkle Community, died Monday, October 1, 2012. She was 96.

She was a hard-working, Godly woman who led many to Christ during her life-long service at Payne’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She was also famous for baking thousands of wonderful coconut or caramel cakes that blessed so many Lookout Mountain tables!

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Ralph Moore; her daughter, Gloria Joan Moore; parents, Annie and John Hixon, and siblings, Geraldine Britt, Cora O’Brien, Ruth Moore, Nola Green, and Roy Hixon.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Katherine Shugart; grandson, Shawn Moore; great-grandson, Jason Moore; and many nieces and nephews.

Betty Jane Hall Trundle of Ringgold died Monday, October 1, 2012. She was 90.

A lifelong resident of the north Georgia area, she was a member of Ringgold United Methodist Church and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, David Trundle; parents, Calvin Barker and Grace Styles Hall; six brothers, Perry, James, Calvin, Harold, Bill and Roy Hall.

Agnes Lucille Rodgers, 83, Lookout Mountain

Agnes Lucille Rodgers of Lookout Mountain died Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at her home. She was 83.

She was born in Wilder, Tenn., to the late Hubert and Ira Mae Gillentine. She was owner/operator of Fort Oglethorpe Beauty Shop for over 50 years, and was a member of the Georgia Silver Haired Legislature.

She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Elise Malone, Nannie Jo Raines, and Geri Birchfield.

Survivors include her children, Sharree (Craig) Stoker of Flintstone, Kathy (Glen) Nicotra of Savannah, Vickie (Donald) Clark of Chickamauga, Douglas (Susan) Rodgers of Griffin; sisters, Mary Ann Tarrant, Virginia Houser both of Kingston, Tenn.; six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Mack Arthur Heard, 70, Chickamauga

Mack Arthur Heard of Chickamauga died Wednesday, October 3, 2012. He was 70.

He had lived in the north Georgia area for most of his life and was a member of Clifton Hills Baptist Church. He loved fishing and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a kind-hearted man who always considered others’ needs before his own and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cliff and Connie Heard; brother, Ray Heard; three sisters, Mildred Hartman, Judy Volzke and Ruth Brown; and grandson, Cody Heard.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 48 years, Lynn Cole Heard of Chickamauga; daughter and son-in-law, Kellie and Danny Edwards of Ringgold; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Kelly Heard of Rossville; three sisters, Polly Hudson and Pat Dietz both of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Grace Morgan of Flintstone; three grandchildren, Brennan, Lucas and Landon; and several nieces and nephews.

Bessie Walton Larkin, born February 3, 1916, passed peacefully September 28, 2012. She was 96.

She was a resident of Citrus Health & Rehab in Inverness, Fla. She was a member of Parkway Baptist Temple in Ft. Oglethorpe since 1980, a friend of First Presbyterian Church in Inverness, Fla., and a member of the Eastern Star. She was famous for her cooking, loved gardening, gospel music, and visiting with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Pryor Larkin; sisters, Jessie Templeton, Pearl Keys, Estelle Gowan, Alice Luster; brother, Oscar Walton and son-in-law, Charles Croswell.

Survivors include her children, Bob and Carole Larkin, Wayne and Marguerite Larkin, James and Maria Larkin, Ann Croswell, Wanda and Layton Bennett; eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; treasured nieces, nephews, and friends.

Donald Wayne Coppit, 72, Rossville

Donald Wayne Coppit of Rossville died Saturday, September 29, 2012, at his home. He was 72.

He co-pastored at the House of God and radio broadcast ministry until health problems arose. He was a member of New Covenant Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 40-plus years, Dorothy Hicks Coppit.

Survivors include his children, Tammy (Mike) King, Glynda (Anthony) Hickman, Pete (Sheba) Coppit, step-daughters, Janice (Ed) Lawson, Linda (Larry) Sain; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and surviving brother, Larry Coppit. Virginia Porter, 80, Summerville

Virginia “Jenny” Porter of Summerville died Monday, September 24, 2012. She was 80.

She was a native of Atlanta and had lived in the north Georgia area since 2004 having attended the Freedom Fellowship and Freedom Tabernacle Churches. While living in Atlanta, she was a member of Christ Fellowship, graduated from Bauder College of Interior Design, and had worked for many years with Southern Bell Telephone Company and also for J.C. Penny as an Interior Designer. Mrs. Porter loved her family, the outdoors, and animals. She had a green thumb and she put it to use in her beautiful flower gardens. She also enjoyed watching the deer and the birds in her backyard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dorsey Porter, Jr.; brother, Augustus Shope, Jr.; and sister, Rose Mary Zeeman.

Survivors include her sons, Jeff Porter of Summerville and Craig (Becky) Porter of Chickamauga; sisters, Betty Hardy and Leena Shope; one grandson, Kyle Porter of Chickamauga; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services: Thursday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Resthaven Gardens of Memory located at 2284 Candler Road Decatur, GA 30032. Visitation: Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Grace Ann Bell Connally of Chattanooga died Friday, September 28, 2012. She was 68.

She was born in Henagar, Ala., to the late G.W. and Gertrude Bell and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Rossville.

She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Frances Lackey, Sue Smith, and three grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Perry (Susan) Bell of Rossville, Juanita Kean Pace of Fort Payne, Melissa Kean of Ooltewah, J.B. (Gina) Burt, Jr. of Sweetwater, Saundra Burt of Rome, Kayla Swafford Bell of Cleveland, Tenn.; sisters, Opal Meeks of Fort Payne, Pauline Silver of Cartersville; 10 grand-children, nine great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Marguerite Campbell Felker of Ringgold died Friday, September 28, 2012. She was 92.

She was born to the late Jessie L. and Maude Day Clark on January 24, 1920, in Hollywood, Fla., retired from Sweetwater after 32 years of service, was a faithful member of Ringgold First Baptist Church where she was in the Joy Choir and a member of the Love Sunday school class and she was also a 50 year member and Past Worthy Matron for the Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star – Ringgold Chapter #245.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Lee Campbell; second husband, George Felker; sister, Rebecca Swanson; brothers, Robert, Herman, Jessie Lee Jr., Jack and Raymond Clark.

Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Campbell Smith of Ringgold; step-children, Janice Kiker, Sidney and Alan Felker, all of Dalton; brothers, Gene Clark of Ringgold, Billy Clark of Dalton; three grandchildren, Kyle (Jan) Keys, Carla York and David Keys, all of Ringgold, several step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

Mary F. Fricks “Nanny” of Flintstone died Sunday, September 30, 2012, at her residence. She was 87.

She was a native of South Carolina and had lived most of her life in Chattanooga and Flintstone. She was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church and the Gleaner’s Sunday school class. She retired in 1987 from Red Food Stores with 30 years of service. Her passions in life were her family, church, embroidering, quilting, and watching “Wheel of Fortune.”

She was preceded in death by her husband, T.J. Fricks; grandson, Jon Massey; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her children, Mary F. Massey of Flintstone and John O. (Annette) Frazier of Soddy Daisy; brother, Robert D. Crick of Atlanta; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
