An alert deputy saved a home from being destroyed by arson after it had been burglarized this past week.

According to LaFayette Police Department reports:

Walker County sheriff’s deputy Mason Brewer noticed smoke coming from vents on the roof of a Warthen Street home on Sept. 18 after 10 a.m.

Due to the quick response by the LaFayette Fire Department the fire was limited to the master bedroom but the house sustained smoke and water damage throughout.

The investigation that followed determined that jewelry had been stolen from the residence, according to Sgt. Wesley Steele.

The thief broke into the home through a small window in the rear. After stealing the jewelry the mattress was set on fire.

The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the arson.

Police officials believe the house would have burned to the ground if deputy Brewer had not driven by when he did.

The primary suspect in the case is Rickey Sweet, who was arrested on Friday regarding four thefts from unlocked vehicles. A few leads that have developed point toward Sweet, according to Steele. Officials are waiting on the records from Sweet’s ankle monitor.

Julian Uvalle, also arrested with Sweet in a rash of thefts, was questioned about the incident, but has denied having any involvement in that incident, despite admitting to several other crimes that occurred recently. Officials maintain that Uvalle has been cooperative and admitted to several other crimes he committed.
