ROSSVILLE - When 5-foot-1 Alysa Daniel was playing volleyball for Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School, putting up big kill numbers was something generally left up to her taller teammates.

But that's not the case any longer.

Now a member of the Georgia Northwestern Lady Bobcats, Daniel and the other five members of the squad are having to pool their resources and talents in an effort to compete on the junior college level.

Daniel finished Monday night with a team-high nine kills, but the Lady Bobcats' lack of height and lack of depth were too much to overcome against NCAA Division III newcomer Covenant College, who left the Rossville Athletic Center with a four-set victory.

"We can only do so many things having just six xplayers, and my tallest player is just 5-foot-7, so we're pretty vertically challenged," said first-year GNTC head coach Carrie Powell. "They are all used to playing just one position (in high school), so they are having to become very versatile and having to learn to play every position."

Despite their underdog status against the Lady Scots, GNTC (1-4) did make things easy for their guests. They hung tough in a 25-20 first-set loss, then evened the match with a 25-17 victory in the second set.

But Covenant would begin to exert control in the third set, going on to a 25-14 win before clinching the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth and final set.

"We got a little behind tonight and had to play some catch up, and that really cost us tonight," Powell said. "We just have to keep practicing to get better. We have some leapers with some big arms, and we are finding ways to pull out games here and there against much bigger competition. It’s preparing us really well for colleges on our level.”

Gordon Lee alum Kayla Pierce had six kills and a block in the loss, while LaFayette alum Candice McClain picked up five kills and a block while recording two aces. Ex-Lady Rambler Fallon Larmon had three kills and two aces, while another former Lady Ramblers, Siouxanne Hawkins, had a kill and an ace. Kristine Huskey (Battlefield Parkway Christian) also added two aces.

GNTC will host Bryan College at Rossville Athletic Center on Monday, Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m. All students presenting their student ID will get in for free.
