A Chattanooga man was arrested nearly a month after he allegedly attempted to run over a Catoosa County sheriff’s deputy with his truck in Rossville.

According to the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office:

John Wesley Patterson, 29, of East 50th Street in Chattanooga, Tenn., was arrested on Monday, Sept. 3, on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, obstruction or hindering law enforcement, unregistered vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude, as well as a hold from Hamilton County, Tenn., for three counts of aggravated assault.

Patterson’s bond was set at $15,500 on the four charges from Catoosa County. He is being held in jail due to the hold by the Hamilton County, Tenn., Sheriff’s Office.

While on a call on the evening of Aug. 8 on Vero Beach Road in Rossville, sheriff’s deputy L.C. Cripps made contact with Patterson after noticing the truck Patterson was driving didn’t have a valid tag on it.

Moments later, Patterson nearly hit the deputy with the unregistered truck.

“I asked the offender (Patterson) why he did not have a tag on his truck and he responded that it could not pass inspection and that he had not had the vehicle long,” Cripps said. “I then asked him for his driver’s license, insurance card, and proof of purchase date of the vehicle.”

After gathering the requested items, Patterson’s license was checked through 911 dispatch, which informed deputy Cripps that Patterson had an outstanding warrant in Chattanooga, Tenn.

“I told the offender that he was under arrest for a warrant in Tennessee and to turn off his engine and step out of the truck,” Cripps said. “The offender then revved up his engine and put the vehicle in reverse. He went back a few feet, and then came straight towards me and turned to my right at the last second.”

Cripps said Patterson could not get by due to his patrol car being in the way.

“He backed up again and came towards me a second time,” Cripps said. “I stepped to my right to avoid being struck by him as he sped away.”

Patterson fled the scene, running stop signs as he headed towards East Ridge, Tenn., reports show.

“I notified dispatch of the offender fleeing and had them call the East Ridge Police Department to look out for the vehicle and offender,” Cripps said. “I then pursued the offender in my patrol car until he reached Tennessee.”

Following the confrontation, deputy Cripps was in possession of Patterson’s Tennessee driver’s license, his Social Security card, a court date card for Chattanooga City Court, and a Visa debit card that Patterson had turned over when first stopped.

After almost a month on the run, Patterson was booked in Catoosa County jail at approximately 2:50 a.m. Monday morning, Sept. 3.
