COMMUNITY · Voting has begun in the 2012 Best of Walker contest, sponsored by the Walker County Chamber of Commerce and the Walker County Messenger. This is the fifth annual contest in which residents are encouraged to vote for the favorites in local services in 55 categories. The Hupmobile car was produced from 1909 -1940 by the Hupp Motor Company of Detroit, Mich. The exhibit also features a model train and the former LaFayette depot ticket booth. CHURCH · The LaFayette First United Methodist Church will celebrate its homecoming beginning at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012. On Aug. 10, 1835, the congregation received a free building lot for its first church, a log cabin, on South Main Street in the new town of Chattooga (later named LaFayette). The church is 177 years old. The Rev. David Wilson, pastor of LFUMC from 1975-1977, will be guest preacher. The service, themed Precious Memories, will be followed by a covered dish luncheon. Several musical specials will be featured, along with displays of church artifacts, recognition of special guests and historical handouts. Friends, former church members and staff are invited to attend. The Rev. John Moore is the pastor in his fifth year of ministry at LFUMC.

COMMUNITY · The 2012 Lake Winnie Youth Talent Search is the chance for guests younger than 18 to take the Jukebox Junction stage and showcase their performing arts talent. The contest final round is on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 5 p.m. The top acts from the two preliminary rounds will compete in the finals for a grand prize, which includes $500 and the opportunity to open for Confederate Railroad on Sept. 2. Financial Peace University (FPU) is a 9-week program that teaches a common sense, biblical approach to handling money.
