COMMUNITY · Voting has begun in the 2012 Best of Walker contest, sponsored by the Walker County Chamber of Commerce and the Walker County Messenger. This is the fifth annual contest in which residents are encouraged to vote for the favorites in local services in 55 categories. This contest is completely electronic and all votes must be made online. To vote go to walkercochamber.com/bestofwalker2012.htm or catwalkchat.com. Voters are encouraged to fill out as many categories as they wish; however when voting for a specific person please list their business name and/or geographic location. Main Street, between Joe Stock Memorial Park and the Marsh House) in LaFayette will display photographs of some former service stations and car dealerships that operated in LaFayette, including information on LaFayette’s former Hupmobile dealership. The Hupmobile car was produced from 1909 -1940 by the Hupp Motor Company of Detroit, Mich. The exhibit also features a model train and the former LaFayette depot ticket booth. CHURCH · The LaFayette First United Methodist Church will celebrate its homecoming beginning at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012. On Aug. 10, 1835, the congregation received a free building lot for its first church, a log cabin, on South Main Street in the new town of Chattooga (later named LaFayette). The church is 177 years old. The Rev. David Wilson, pastor of LFUMC from 1975-1977, will be guest preacher. The service, themed Precious Memories, will be followed by a covered dish luncheon. Several musical specials will be featured, along with displays of church artifacts, recognition of special guests and historical handouts. Friends, former church members and staff are invited to attend. The Rev. John Moore is the pastor in his fifth year of ministry at LFUMC.

CHURCH · Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church located south of LaFayette on Trion Highway will hold its annual homecoming celebration Sunday, Aug. 26, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Special singers are Tiny and Marlys Van Kleef. COMMUNITY · The 2012 Lake Winnie Youth Talent Search is the chance for guests younger than 18 to take the Jukebox Junction stage and showcase their performing arts talent. The contest final round is on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 5 p.m. The top acts from the two preliminary rounds will compete in the finals for a grand prize, which includes $500 and the opportunity to open for Confederate Railroad on Sept. 2. COMMUNITY · Oakwood Baptist Church will present Financial Peace University with Dave Ramsey. Financial Peace University (FPU) is a 9-week program that teaches a common sense, biblical approach to handling money. Classes begin Monday, Sept. 10, and run every Monday night for nine weeks through Nov. 5. COMMUNITY · The Chattanooga History Center will present a walking tour, Bluff View, based on a section of Maury Nicely’s Chattanooga Walking Tour and Historic Guide at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 28. The History Center’s executive director and historian, Dr. Daryl Black, will serve as tour guide, and he will meet registered participants at the south end of the Walnut Street Bridge in Chattanooga. Participants will view significant Civil War sites, the site of a manufacturing company chartered in 1847, and several early 20th Century residences that remain on the Bluff.
