COMMUNITY · The Northwest Georgia Regional Commission will host a Transportation Investment Act of 2010 — T-SPLOST — informational outreach from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, at the Walker County Civic Center. There will be maps available for viewing and printed material fully explaining the bill that will be placed on in the July 31 referendum.

COMMUNITY · PSA screening will be offered from 8-11 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, at Erlanger North (Morrison Springs Road). The PSA test is primarily used to screen for prostate cancer in men before symptoms appear. This is a quick blood draw from the arm with results mailed at a later date. Men must be at least 50 years old unless he is between 45 and 50 years old with a family history of prostate cancer. Cost for the screening is $15. Registration is required. The program is sponsored by North Georgia YMCA and the Chattanooga Area Food Bank and is funded through a USDA grant.

The camps will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9-11 a.m. each day at a cost of $60 per camp. Tuesdays will include work on the driving range, Wednesdays will be spent on the practice greens, and Thursdays will be reserved for on course work. The camps will be directed and taught by Eddie Jackson, a former PGA Tour player who has spent the past 27 years as a teaching professional. COMMUNITY · An antique typewriter exhibit is ongoing at Chattooga Academy in LaFayette. The exhibit features Royal, Underwood and Smith typewriters, as well as Imperial and Smith-Corona typewriters. An Oliver No. 9 is also on display. The typewriters were manufactured approximately from between 1915-1950. A volunteer will be on-hand to assist visitors with the exhibit on Sundays from 1-3 p.m. Chattooga Academy is open from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. most days Monday through Friday. COMMUNITY · Combat Sports and Scorecard Athletics are conducting regional tryouts for the Team Combat All-American Team at Cleveland State Community College on Thursday, June 28, and Friday, June 29. The tryouts are open to baseball players age 13–18. All players attending the tryouts will have their baseball skills evaluated by coaches and have evaluation profiles and reports made available to numerous college coaches and scouts. COMMUNITY · Fireworks, food and music will be the theme Friday, June 29, at LaFayette's annual Freedom Festival. Johnny Cash Now, a Johnny Cash tribute band, will headline the event, which will be from 5-11 p.m. at the municipal park at the Recreation Department at 638 S. Main Street (South U.S. 27), next to the golf course. Admission is free. Music City Brass will take will take the stage at 6:30 p.m. This local band's repertoire includes Dixieland jazz, gospel and classic country favorites. Johnny Cash Now will kick off their show at 8 p.m. The band’s music includes songs by Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, June Carter and the Tennessee Three.
