Children enjoy the Patriotic Kids Contest at the Patriotism at the Post celebration.
"They are good and we are excited to have them," said Chris McKeever, executive director of the Sixth Calvary Museum and who oversees event. "They will bring a new feel to our Fourth of July celebration. This year the band's vocalists will lead the audience in a sing-along of patriotic tunes."
The sixth annual event will happen on July 3 at the old Polo Field at Barnhardt Circle, just outside Chickamauga Battlefield. The evening kicks off at 7 o’clock, with the concert at 8 p.m.
John Feezell, trumpeter with the big band, said, "How can you not be ready to celebrate the Fourth when we open the concert with Glenn Miller? We want to see people in front of the stage dancing and everyone joining in for the sing-along."
The group will perform jazz and patriotic arrangements, as well as swing numbers. They feature a full 1940s big band make-up with four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones and a rhythm section.
Again this year there will be a Kid's Patriotic Contest, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
According to McKeever, children will line up at the bandstand to show off their patriotic pride by dressing in red, white and blue. The best-decorated girl and boy (12 years old and younger) will each win a $50 gift card. There will also be awards presented for the Patriotic Kid's Coloring Contest.
"People enjoy coming to the Polo Field for the Fourth because it is easy to get to without having to travel to downtown Chattanooga. They can enjoy an incredible evening in a beautiful venue and be standing on the historic post where polo matches and troop reviews once took place," McKeever said.
Admission is free, with Polo Field parking at $5 per car. Concessions will be available and Erlanger at Hutcheson's Auxiliary will provide a shuttle for the handicapped. Rolling Video Games will be there for the kids from 7-9 p.m. Donations from the audience will be taken to benefit the big band.
