Battlefield farmer’s market supporters extend an invitation to “come shake the hands that feed you,” in a family atmosphere, Sat., June 23. The market will be held at the Walker County Agricultural Center (behind the Walker County Civic Center), 10052 Hwy 27 North in Rock Spring, between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon.

Market season began April 28 and will run until Nov 10 with hours on Sat. 8 a.m. to noon and Wed. 3 p.m. to 6.p.m, rain or shine.

Goods offered include a wide variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables, farm fresh eggs, grass-fed beef, jams and jellies, homemade baked goodies made from scratch, homemade soap and other crafts. Gospel/country music will also be performed live Sat. by various artists, including the Down Home Pickers.

Partnered with the market since 2009, Wholesome Wave representatives will also be available to explain benefits of their program. Their mission is to “improve access and affordability of fresh, healthy, locally-grown produce to underserved communities,” with affiliated programs such as SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program).

Out of the 24 to 26 states in the US that are involved, Battlefield is one of the 14 SNAP approved farmer’s markets in Georgia, which means when a SNAP card is swiped at the market, each $1 will equal $2. Wholesome Wave is able to match the card benefits by donations made throughout the year. Anyone wishing to donate at the local level can go to the manager’s table on any market day.

Due to their close proximity to the state lines, individuals from Tennessee and Alabama may also use their SNAP cards at the market. For more information about the Wholesome Wave program, go to wholesomewave.org and wholesomewavegeorgia.org .

According to market managers, all farmers/vendors are within 25 miles of the market to support buying local in an effort to benefit the local economy, but border county vendors/new farmers are always welcome.
