COMMUNITY · The Walker County Chamber of Commerce will host a political candidates forum Tuesday, June 19 at the Walker County Civic Center in Rock Spring at 6:30 p.m. The free event is open to the public. All local candidates who qualified for the July 31 primary election are invited to participate. These races include but are not limited to county commissioner, sheriff, Georgia state representative (District 1), tax commissioner, probate judge, magistrate judge, Walker County school board (District 1) and district attorney. Candidates should arrive at 6 p.m. for registration. Participating candidates will present their responses to questions prepared by the Chamber’s governmental affairs committee. COMMUNITY · U.S. Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA-9) has announced a series of Catoosa County Days as part of his 9th Congressional District county connection program. A constituent services representative from Graves’ office will be available to meet with local constituents at the County Administrative Building, 800 LaFayette Street, Ringgold. Staff members are trained to assist Georgians with casework, questions and concerns pertaining to federal programs or policy issues. The remaining meeting days for 2012 are June 19, Oct. 9 and Dec. 4, from 1 to 3 p.m.

COMMUNITY · Second Baptist Church in association with the North Georgia YMCA and the Chattanooga Area Food Bank will offer a free summer lunch program Tuesdays and Thursdays, to kids and teens ages 0-17. COMMUNITY · Junior golfers up to age 18 are invited to attend summer golf camps at the LaFayette Golf Course. The camps will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9-11 a.m. each day at a cost of $60 per camp. Tuesdays will include work on the driving range, Wednesdays will be spent on the practice greens, and Thursdays will be reserved for on course work. The camps will be directed and taught by Eddie Jackson, a former PGA Tour player who has spent the past 27 years as a teaching professional. COMMUNITY · An antique typewriter exhibit is ongoing at Chattooga Academy in LaFayette. The exhibit features Royal, Underwood and Smith typewriters, as well as Imperial and Smith-Corona typewriters. An Oliver No. 9 is also on display. The typewriters were manufactured approximately from between 1915-1950. A volunteer will be on-hand to assist visitors with the exhibit on Sundays from 1-3 p.m. Chattooga Academy is open from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. most days Monday through Friday. Lunch for children ages infant-17 will be served from noon-1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at LaFayette 1st United Methodist Church, 301 South Main Street; and from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at Second Baptist Church, 500 West Main Street in LaFayette; and from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Friday at the LaFayette Housing Authority, 300 Oak Street. The program is sponsored by North Georgia YMCA and the Chattanooga Area Food Bank and is funded through a USDA grant.

COMMUNITY · LaFayette Historic Preservation Commission will host a walk and breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, in downtown LaFayette. The free, one-hour event begins at the gazebo at Joe Stock Memorial Park. Participants will walk to the LaFayette Cemetery, at the end of Wardlaw Street, for a walking tour of the cemetery. They will then return to the park. The walk covers one mile. The route is the same as in the new LaFayette Cemetery Walking Tour brochure. Participants should bring their own sack breakfast to enjoy after the walk. Bottled water will be provided. A rain date has been set for Wednesday, June 27. The walk is part of the Bike! Walk! Northwest Georgia program sponsored by the Georgia Department of Transportation and Northwest Georgia Regional Commission.
