Three of the four age divisions were decided on the field of play.
The Boynton Stars had little difficulty in winning the three-team 6-under division. They opened with a 16-6 win over Chickamauga before rolling past the North Georgia Elite, 20-1 in a winners’ bracket game.
From there, they drew the Elite again in the finals where they posted a 15-1 victory.
The Whitfield County All-Stars went 4-0 to claim the district 10-under title. After a 12-1 win over the Boynton Stars on Friday night, they edged past both LaFayette (8-5) and Rock Spring (10-7) to punch their ticket to the finals.
The Rock Spring Rock Starz would emerge from the losers’ bracket, but wouldn’t have enough to force a second game as Whitfield went on to a 7-1 victory in the championship game.
The 14-under tournament was a best-of-three series between the Boynton Thunder and the Gordon County Blitz, the only two teams in the field. Boynton won Game 1, 15-5, before slugging their way to 24-10 Game 2 win that took more than three hours to complete.
However, the 12-under division was decided before the championship game ever reached the end of the first inning.
Whitfield County’s All-Stars won their first two games on Saturday to earn a spot in the finals, but found themselves trailing the Catoosa Nitemares, 5-0, after the top of the first inning.
But after the first pitch in the bottom half of the inning, Whitfield’s coaches filed a protest, claiming that by throwing just one pitch that Catoosa’s starting pitcher had exceeded her Dizzy Dean-set limit of three games pitched in a single day.
After a meeting with tournament officials and a check of the official scorebook, the protest was upheld, giving Whitfield County the championship by forfeit.
The nine-team 8-under division, who began play on Friday night, will finish up on Sunday afternoon.
The Georgia Stars (Chattanooga Valley) have began the tournament with wins over the Boynton Crocs (17-15), the Whitfield County Stars (12-6), and the Rossville Storm (20-13). They finished up just before 11 p.m. Saturday night with a 12-6 win over the Whitfield County All-Stars to advance to Sunday’s title game.
LaFayette, who survived a thrilled 16-15 game over the Boynton Crocs to stay alive in the losers’ bracket, will take on Rossville at 1 p.m. on Sunday with the winner having to face Whitfield County at 2:30 p.m. in the losers’ bracket finals.
The winner of the 2:30 game must defeat the Georgia Stars twice to win the district title.
The scene will shift to Chickamauga for the Dizzy Dean State Softball Tournaments, which get underway on June 29.
