Livestock projects have been a part of the Georgia 4-H Program from the beginning. They are family-oriented projects that involve parents working together with their 4-H member to raise an animal and get it ready for the show ring. Besides being a lot of fun and very rewarding, the livestock projects help to build self-esteem and responsibility in youth.

This is the time of the year to sign up for the Market Hog Project. 4-H members between the ages of 9-19 are eligible to participate in this livestock project. As the entry deadline for this project gets closer it is important for those interested in participating to contact us at the extension office to get all the details.

For more information about showing market hogs through 4-H, call the Walker County Extension Office at 706-638-2548. We can provide all the details for those considering the project so families can decide if it is right for them. Some of these details range from the correct size and breed of hog to purchase to the entry deadline and supplies needed for the project.

Norman Edwards is coordinator of Walker County Extension Service.
