Joyce Bartlett Ellison, 58, Rock Spring

Joyce Bartlett Ellison of Rock Spring died Monday, Oct. 10, 2011. She was 58.

Survivors include her husband, Bobby Ellison of Rock Spring; daughter, Tammy Ellison Moore of LaFayette; son, Clyde Ellison of Rock Spring; sisters, Linda Adophson of Chickamauga, Evelyn Delay of LaFayette and Sandy Bartlett of Menlo; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Donald L. “Papa” Smith, 78, Fort Oglethorpe

Donald L. “Papa” Smith of Fort Oglethorpe died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011. He was 78.

Brother Don was a 1955 graduate of Tennessee Temple Bible School and 1957 graduate of Tennessee Temple College in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was the former pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in North Chattanooga, Tenn., Emmanuel Baptist Church in Decatur, Ala., and Emmanuel Baptist Church in Columbia, Tenn. At the time of his death, he served as a missionary with Rock of Ages Prison Ministry based out of Cleveland, Tenn., and member of Victory Baptist Church in Rossville.

His life revolved around telling others about his Jesus and he wanted everyone to accept Christ as their savior and know that one day they could spend eternity in heaven. He enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved spending time with his friends and family. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather and cherished time with his family. How appropriate that he went to heaven on a Thursday, his visitation night. He loved going on church visitation.

His life verses were John 3:16-17: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Emma Jane Smith; brothers, Clarence, Glenn and James; sisters, Jewell Smith, Letty Stutz, Ella Sutfin and Anna Souders; son, Melvin Picklesimer, and several nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Wisteria “Terry” Smith; daughter, Janie Smith Cooley (Jimmy) of Rossville; sons, Charles Douglas Smith (Shari) of Jacksonville, Fla., Mitchell Picklesimer of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Monty Picklesimer of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Jessica Smith Bullard (Ricky), Josh Smith, Caitlin Smith and Carrie Smith; sister, Patricia Wilinson of Dallas; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services: Sunday, Oct. 16 at 2:30 p.m. at Victory Baptist Church in Rossville with Ernest Groce, Rev. Ted Verville and Rev. Mike Van Horn officiating the homegoing celebration service. Alan Ross Brown, 59, Chickamauga

Alan Ross Brown of Chickamauga died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011. He was 59.

He was born in Chickamauga to the late Julian Crowder and Barbara Jean Brown, and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Chickamauga.

Survivors include his loving wife of 31 years, Janice Brown; children, Michael (Lindsay) Brown of Fort Oglethorpe and Angie Hill of Fla.; siblings, Russel Brown of Alpharetta and Ellen Brown of Chickamauga; grandchildren, Cody, Jackson, Kayla, Dusty, Krysten, Kelsey and Jordan; great-granddaughter, Kylee, and one niece.

Thomas Earl Pryor, 61, Rossville

Thomas Earl Pryor of Rossville died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011. He was 61.

He was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area and attended the Cowboy Church of LaFayette. He was also employed with the Walker County Board of Education as the fleet manager for more than 15 years. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle to his entire family and will be sadly missed by all that knew him. His greatest joy was spending most of his time with his family and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, J.T. Pryor; mother, Stella Pryor Stoker, and brother, Ted Pryor.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 42 years, Beverly McBrayer Pryor of Rossville; son, Scotty Pryor of Rossville; daughters and sons-in-law, April (Lanny) Hughes of Chickamauga and Misty (Tony) Farmer of Rock Spring; sister and brother-in-law, Lynn (Don) Taylor of Chickamauga; brother and sister-in-law, Joe (Janet) Pryor of Kensington; four grandchildren, Kelsey Snow, Blake Farmer, Emma Farmer and Alivia “Molly” Hughes, and several nieces and nephews.

April Deann Goldsmith, 39, Chattanooga, Tenn.

April Deann Goldsmith of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Friday, October 7, 2011. She was 39.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was of the Baptist faith. She was employed with Lifetouch Studios for more than 10 years and was an avid Tennessee Vols football fan. She also enjoyed playing softball, as well as being involved with her children playing baseball and basketball. She was a devoted mother and sister who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gary and Evelyn “Toppie” Goldsmith, and four grandparents.

Survivors include her three children, Kaman Denae Whittaker, Jeren Devin Careathers and Neyland Kayne Careathers all of Chattanooga, Tenn.; brother and sister-in-law, Rocky (Zana) Goldsmith of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Randy (Angie) Goldsmith Sr., of Ringgold; sister and fiance, Carla Goldsmith (Dale Jobert) of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Jerry Bryant of Tunnel Hill., and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Betty Jean Fulmer Dye, 81, Chickamauga

Betty Jean Fulmer Dye of Chickamauga died Monday, Oct. 10, 2011. She was 81.

She was born in Summerville to the late George Otis and Lillie Gertrude Wilson Fulmer. She had been a lifelong resident of Chickamauga. She was a member of Chickamauga Church of Christ. She had worked at several stores in the area, such as Shop-Rite, Piggly Wiggly, Mac’s Grocery, Imperial Cup, Hills Department Store and Drew’s Drug Store. She enjoyed quilting and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Clinton Dye; brother, Louis Fulmer; sisters, Janie Little, Mary Evelyn Bailey and Shirley Osby; son-in-law, Greg Sharp; grandson, Alan Dye, and great-grandson, Jackson Dye.

She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Deborah Sharp of Flintstone and Beverly (Jim) Ussery of West Palm Beach, Fla.; sons and daughters-in-law, Dan (Lynn) Dye and Don (Frances) Dye, both of Chickamauga; grandchildren, Anthony (Kristy) Dye, Addan (Crystal) Dye, Beth Dye Brown, Billy (Melody) Dye, Jane Edwards and Jason (Ashley) Madaris; great-grandchildren, Clay Dye, Maggie Dye, Victoria Dye, Dylan Dye, Baylee Brown, Chandler Brown and Jacob Dye; sister, Reba Kirby, and several nieces and nephews.

Avery Lawrence Wann Jr., 92, Rossville

Avery “Jack” Lawrence Wann Jr. died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011. He was 92.

He was born to the late Avery Lawrence Wann Sr. and Bobbie Steele Wann on April 24, 1010 in Stevenson, Ala. Mr. Wann was of the Baptist faith, a retired salesman with Rossville Auto Service Center and enjoyed baseball, flying model airplanes and working on cars.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Juanita Wann; son, Rodney Wann, and granddaughter, Bali Wann.

Survivors include his daughter, Carolyn (John) Hall of Ringgold; son, Richard (Sheila) Wann of Birmingham; sister, Betty Jo McDougale of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Ginger Wann, Kevin Wann, Vincent Ball, Cory Ball, Shay Wann and Shawn Wann; great-grandchildren, Skylar Ball, Emma Ball, Andrew Wann, Adam Wann, Amber Wann, Peyton Ball and David McPherson.

Gladys Gertrude Holcomb Boatwright Mullens, 86, Fort Oglethorpe

Gladys Gertrude Holcomb Boatwright Mullens of Ft. Oglethorpe died on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011. She was 86.

She was a resident of the Ft. Oglethorpe area for the past 36 years and had formerly lived in California. She was a former employee of EPD, Electronic Production Development, for 6 years and was a member of Light House of the Word Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Johnny B. Boatwright; last husband, Joseph Woodson Mullens; parents Fred and Hester Roberts Holcomb; two daughters, Linda Shiffert Berkley and Nancy White Spittler; son, Johnny Lee Boatwright; grandson, Ricky Wilson, Jr.; three sisters and five brothers.

Survivors include three children, Jim Boatwright of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Patricia Rinke of Hays, Kan., and Wanda Curtin (John) of Ringgold.; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; many special nieces and nephews and two special friends, Louise Carroll and Theresa Gordon.

Robbie Lou Burke Madaris, 92, Chickamauga

Robbie Lou Burke Madaris of Chickamauga died on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011. She was 92.

She was a lifelong resident of the Walker County area. She was a member of Grand Center Baptist Church, where she was a former church clerk, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendant. She graduated as salutatorian from the Chattanooga Valley High School class of 1936. She became a homemaker, enjoying cooking, quilting, sewing and the outdoors.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Quentin Roosevelt Madaris; parents, Scott and Wilma Stone Burke, and two brothers, Jack and Joe Burke.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Doug (Ramona) of Chickamauga; two sisters, Lydia Martin of Rossville and Willie Franciosa of Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandsons, Scott (Julia) Madaris of Ringgold and Gary (April) Madaris of Acworth; four great-grandsons, Josh, Blake, Jonah and Bryant Madaris, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services: Thursday, Oct. 13 at noon in the funeral home chapel with Revs. Mike Gregg and Warren Scott officiating. Burial: Grand Center Cemetary. Terri Denise Hasty, 50, Rossville

Terri Denise Hasty, beloved daughter of Gary and Doris (Dawson) Hasty of Rossville, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011. She was 50.

Terri was a devout Christian and member of Liberty Baptist Church and formerly of Battlefield Baptist Church. She served as Junior class Sunday school teacher at both churches, along with her loyal assistant, Cindy Boss, at Liberty. Her church family and Sunday school class were her first love.

She was a 1979 graduate of Rossville High School and was the recipient of the Outstanding Citizenship award upon graduation. She also received the Bobby Prescott Award. Terri was a member of the Rossville High School Alumni Association where she received the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year award. She received an associate’s degree from Chattanooga State University. She worked for the Chattanooga Police Department for nearly 14 years. She was also honored as the Achiever of the Year by the Rehabilitation Association of Georgia.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O.B. Dawson, Jack Hasty and Catherine Hasty.

In addition to her parents, survivors include several aunts, uncles and cousins and a host of many dear friends, including Kim Proctor, June Stewart and Cindy Boss.

Alvin William Hall, 70, Ringgold

Alvin William Hall of Ringgold died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, in a local hospital. He was 70.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas. Mr. Hall attended Covenant Life Church for the past seven years. He was retired from the U. S. Army after 28 years of service, having served three tours of duty in Vietnam.

He was preceded in death by parents, Cecil and Lillie Hall; brothers, Junior, Troy, Jessie and Franklin Hall, and sister, Essie Pell.

Survivors include his wife, Veta Hall; two sons, Paul Hall and Leland Hall; daughters, Latesha Hall, Essie Brown and Merissa Bland; brothers, Albert, Jackie, Marshall and Roy Hall; sisters, Patricia Evans and Estill Pittman; grandchildren, Cassidy Pell, Skylar Bland, Logan Brown, Hunter and Donovan Scott, Gunnar and Caleyn Eldridge, and several nieces and nephews.

Linda Lou Welch, 66, Ringgold

Linda Lou Welch of Ringgold died Wednesday, Oct. 05, 2011, in a local hospital. She was 66.

She was a native of Lafollette, Tenn., and had lived in Ringgold for many years where she was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Her passions in life were her family, cooking, and reading.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Bill Watts, and sisters, Hazel Templeton and Connie Lowrance.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Dallas M. Welch; sons, John D. (Kisha) Welch of Trenton and Kenneth Welch of Rossville; grandchildren, Gage and Karlee Welch of Trenton; mother, Viola Jean Watts of Ringgold; father and stepmother, John and Tommie Mozingo of LaFayette; brothers, Steve Mozingo of Ringgold and James Mozingo of Macon; sisters, Bonnie Edmonds of Ringgold and Barbara Sullivan of East Ridge, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.

Ravenia Vernice Smith of Flintstone died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, surrounded by family and friends. She was 75.

She was a member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernie and Ava Christine Miller of Signal Mountain, Tenn.

Survivors include her loving husband of 58 years, James Willie (Bill) Smith of Flintstone; two sons, James Michael (Patricia) Smith of Rock Spring, and Randall Lee Smith of Flintstone; two grandchildren, Jamie Davis of Chatsworth, and Zachary Smith of Flintstone; four brothers, Audley, Myron, Ivan of Signal Mountain and Edwin Miller of Vero Beach, Fla., and two sisters, Joyce Stewart and Winnona Pikus of Signal Mountain.

Marshall Edwin Abney, 84, Ringgold

Marshall Edwin Abney of Ringgold died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011. He was 84.

A lifelong resident of the Ringgold area, Marshall was a businessman and entrepreneur in the Ringgold area. He was a member of the Ringgold First Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in the 82nd Airbourne Division, a life member of the Quitman Masonic Lodge No. 106 and a member of the American Legion Post 40.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Beaver Abney; daughter, Charolette Ann Abney; parents, Grover C. and Lillian Black Abney, and six brothers, Woodrow, Raymond, Watson, Howard, G.C. and Jesse Abney.

Survivors include two children, Lamar Abney of Sarasota, Fla., and Jackie Wofford of Ringgold; three grandchildren, Austin and Jacqueline Abney, both of Sarasota, Fla., and Cam Wofford of Ringgold, and several nieces and nephews.

Charlene Ridley Croy of LaFayette died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011. She was 65.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn Croy; granddaughter, Sadie Davon Long; sister, Connie Carter, and parents, William and Dorothy Ellis Ridley.

Survivors include daughters, Phyllis (Michael) Goodman Jr., Layla (Michael) McGaugh and Natasha Croy; sons, William Long and Richard (Heather) Long, all of LaFayette; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arthur Callahan Jr. of LaFayette died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011. He was 81.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Yvonne Laws Callahan; son, Danny Callahan; father, Arthur Lee Callahan; mother, Sena Roy Callahan Ferrell, and several sisters and brothers.

Carol Stokes Eskew, 80, Rossville

Carol “Jean” Stokes Eskew of Rossville died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011. She was 80.

She had lived in the north Georgia area for most of her life and was a member of Rossville First Baptist Church. She retired from First Tennessee Bank in 1993 after more than 40 years of service and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She also enjoyed reading, crocheting, dancing and bowling.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kermit and Violet Stokes; husband, Charles William Eskew, and sister, Wanda Lee.

Survivors include her two daughters, Renee Ashburn (Clarence Willhoit) of East Ridge, Tenn., and Greta (Ricky) Brown of Rossville; brother, Charles (Kay) Stokes of Ringgold; sister, Judy Martin (Paul Sakrison) of Newnan; four grandchildren, Dawn Parsons, Davin Ashburn, Justin (Cari) Brown and Courtney Brown; great-granddaughter, Violet Parsons; close friends, Liz and Charlie Lee, and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Lloys Rice Himes of Ringgold died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, from her residence at Southern Oaks Assisted Living in Chattanooga, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by both parents, Dr. John R. and Lloys Rice; her husband of 56 years, Charles Himes; her brother-in-law and sister, Allan and Grace MacMullen, and her brother-in-law, Bill Rice.

Mary Lloys was born June 27, 1925. She graduated from Wheaton College in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. She married Charles Himes, also a graduate of Wheaton, in 1945. Mary Lloys served with her husband, Chuck, in pastorates in Kansas, Illinois, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri and Georgia.

Mary Lloys taught on every level from elementary school to high school to college in subjects from piano to English. She was known as a gifted Bible teacher, ending with a class at Creekside at Shallowford, a speaker for women’s groups at churches and Joyful Woman Jubilees, author of a weekly column called Kids Corner for the Sword of the Lord for many years, and a monthly column for the Joyful Woman magazine. She ministered to women in at a crisis pregnancy center. She was a hostess and seamstress extraordinaire. She loved people, never finding someone she could not talk to. She loved talking to them about her Lord.

She was a member of Grace Baptist Church on Shallowford Road in Chattanooga.

Waclav James Constantine Jagiella, 77, Chickamauga

Dr. Waclav “Walter” James Constantine Jagiella of Chickamauga died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011. He was 77.

He was born in Chicago, Ill., to the late Waclav and Anna Noviski Jagiella. He had previously resided in Rome before moving to Chickamauga, where he had resided for the past 15 years. He had been a practicing physician for over 44 years. He was in general practice and bariatrics in Rome and Chickamauga. He was a member of St. Gerald’s Catholic Church in Fort Oglethorpe. He was a member of the American Medical Association and an avid member of the Republican Party.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Edward Jagiella.

Survivors include his wife, Audrone Kulikausakite Jagiella of Chickamauga; children, Waclav Jagiella, Valarie Jagiella, Natalie Jagiella, Agathe Jagiella, Cecile “Agnes” Jagiella, Aleksandra Jagiella, Elizabeth Devery-Marquess and Victoria Jagiella; brother, John James Jagiella of Hebron, Ind., and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Rev. Charles “Smokie” Eugene Hurst of Chickamauga died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011. He was 67.

Smokie was truly devoted to his Lord and Savior. He was the pastor of Chamberlain Road Full Gospel Church, and a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

Dewey Lee Gass, 71, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Dewey Lee Gass of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011. He was 71.

He had lived in the Chattanooga area for most of his life and was a member of the 46th Street Church of God. He was previously employed with ConAgra for several years and was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Kenneth Hartwell Hart, 65, Rossville

Rev. Kenneth Hartwell Hart of Rossville died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011. He was 65.

He was born and raised in Granite City, Ill., and had lived in the north Georgia area for the last 43 years. He was a former associate pastor of Mountain View Baptist Church in Rossville. He was a current member and Sunday school teacher at Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church in Flintstone. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served on the USS Oriskany CV 34 during the Vietnam War, where he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 203, the American Legion Post 40, as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3679. He was also a member of the Southern States Police Benevolent Association and was previously employed with the Georgia Department of Corrections for many years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Davis; father, William Harvey Hart; sister, Karen Faye Moffatt; brothers, Calvin, Richard and Aaron Hart, and sister-in-law, Paulette James.

Clifford Goolesby Jr., 74, Rossville

Clifford Goolesby Jr. of Rossville died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011. He was 74.

He attended Parkway Baptist Temple and the Fellowship Sunday school class. Mr. Goolesby was a former singer with the Gospel Echoes. He was a 1956 graduate of Jackson High School in Jackson, S.C., where he was captain of the high school football and basketball teams, receiving five college scholarships in football. Mr. Goolesby was retired from Combustion Engineering Company with 41 years of service. He loved fishing and restoring classic cars, mainly Corvettes, and was the co-founder of Corvette of Chattanooga. He also loved spending time with his family and friends. Mr. Goolesby completed the process of reading the Bible through five times.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Goolesby Sr., and stepfather, James Edison Satterfield.

James R. Morgan of Flintstone died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at his home. He was 87.

He was born in Flintstone to the late James and Jessie Morgan. James served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He worked for Happy Valley Farms for 30 years, and later retired from Goodyear after more than 10 years of service there.

Glenda Sharon Blevins of Rising Fawn died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011. She was 65.

She grew up in the Rossville area, before moving to Marietta, but has lived on Lookout Mountain for the last 30 years. She was a member of First United Pentecostal Church in Fort Oglethorpe, where she was very active with her church family and enjoyed playing the piano. She was previously employed with Fairyland Elementary School for more than 20 years as a secretary and also enjoyed working and teaching others about computers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Emma Gene Osborne, and her husband, Gary D. Blevins.

Survivors include her son, Gary Preston Blevins of Rising Fawn; two brothers, Steve Osborne of Inman, S.C., and Phillip Osborne of Sumter, S.C.; several nieces and nephews and numerous friends and extended family.
