Kathleen G. Roberts, 81, LaFayette

Kathleen G. Roberts of LaFayette died Thursday, July 7, 2011. She was 81.

She was born in Fallstown, N.C., to Pinkney Woodson and Carrie Rodgers Gilleland.

Survivors include her children, Charles (Leigh) Roberts of Griffin, Dennis Roberts of Cumming and Carey (Norman) Sahlbom of Milner; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her caretaker, Teresa Simpson, and her baby, Maximus.

Memorial services: Tuesday, July 19, at 6 p.m. at Center Point Baptist Church, 118 Center Point Road, LaFayette, GA 30728 with Susan Maddox officiating. Mary Lucille Leath Strickland, 93, Chickamauga

Mary Lucille Leath Strickland of the Cooper Heights community died Tuesday, July 12, 2011. She was 93.

Born in Walker County, to the late Ben Hill and Ella Naomi Broome Leath, she and her husband operated a grocery store in Cooper Heights for 22 years. She was also a retired income tax preparer. She was a member of the Chattanooga Valley Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland Thomas Strickland; daughter, Clara Jeannette Strickland; son, Kenneth Wayne Strickland; unnamed twin brother and sister; sister, Eddie Mae Leath Lewis; brothers, Neil Morris and Jerry Gordon Leath, and granddaughter, Kenney Marie Strickland.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Leisa Waynette Strickland Bryant of Chatsworth and Malena Laniese Strickland Condon of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Waynette Marie Strickland Gonzalez and Michelle Laniese Bryant Poteet; three great-great-granddaughters and three great-great-grandsons.

Geraldine Mitchell Wyatt, 68, LaFayette

Geraldine Mitchell Wyatt of LaFayette died Thursday, July 14, 2011. She was 68.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Wyatt; son, Randy Wyatt; two sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Granger of LaFayette; sons, Rodney Wyatt of Trion, Danny Wyatt of LaFayette and Tony Wyatt of Summerville; sisters, Patsey Wallin of LaFayette and Martha Wallin of Lylerly; brothers, Todd Mitchell and Lee Mitchell, both of Summerville, and Ray Mitchell of Ringgold; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Willard C. Strickland, 82, Chickamauga

Willard C. Strickland of Chickamauga died Tuesday, July 12, 2011. He was 82.

He was a lifelong resident of Chickamauga and was a member of Wallaceville Church of God. Willard retired from Ross Meehan Foundry after 32 years and from Lakeview High School after 10 years. Willard was a Chattanooga Auxiliary Police Officer and worked for the Chickamauga Police Department until 2009.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys L. Strickland; parents, David A. and Ruthie A. Strickland, brothers, Udell, James L. and Charles Strickland.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Cathy Strickland of Chickamauga; daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Terry Payne of Chickamauga; grandsons, Joel Scott Corn of Ringgold and Braxton Tyler Strickland of Perrysburg, Ohio; three great-grandsons, Brennan, Sawyer and Ty Corn, all of Ringgold; sister, Viola Brown of Chickamauga, and several nieces and nephews.

Max McKensie Daniel, 79, Chickamauga

Max McKensie Daniel of Chickamauga died Friday, July 8, 2011. He was 79.

He was born to the late Vernon “Skillet” and Dot Daniel in Dade County. He also lived in Saint Petersburg, Fla., for 22 years before returning to northwest Georgia. Max had retired from Greyhound and U. S. Express, was a member of Battlefield Baptist Church, and enjoyed building and racing cars and collecting hammers.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Rosalind Hubbard Daniel; five sisters, Mildred Guinn, Wilma Daniel, Verna Mae Ridley, Betty Novak and Shirley Ann Hodge, and four brothers, James, Junior, Hershel and Richard Daniel.

Survivors include his loving wife, Velma Lee Daniel of Chickamauga; three children and spouses, Cindy (Mickey) Hawkins of Chickamauga, Tammy (Jimmy Norton) Cobb of LaFayette and Chris (Sheryl) Daniel of LaFayette; brother, Wilfred Daniel of Lookout Mountain; five grandchildren, Chad Daniel, Misty Hawkins, Heather Hawkins, Nichole Harding and Seth Hawkins; three great-grandchildren, Jathan Harding, Lilly Ana Hawkins and Payton Harding, and several nieces and nephews.

Eva Joyce Hickey, 72, Rossville

Eva Joyce Hickey of Rossville died Saturday, July 9, 2011. She was 72.

She was born in Soddy Daisy, Tenn., to the late Luther and Ida Clark, and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Rossville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Hickey; daughter, Janet Helton, and sister, Sarah Crane.

Survivors include her daughter, Vicki (William) Hazlewood of Chickamauga; sister, Freida Lynn of Rossville; four grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Johnny Elbert Hudson, 73, Ringgold

Johnny Elbert Hudson of Ringgold died Saturday, July 9, 2011. He was 73.

He was the son of the late Willard Hudson and Henrietta Sherill Hudson Bean. Johnny retired from the Rosedale Transportation in Dalton, and was a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Hudson; son, Curtis Hudson of Chattanooga, Tenn.; daughter, Stacey Lee (Walter) Turner of Ringgold; grandsons, Rudi Lee and Nick Hudson, and two paternal aunts.

Graveside services: Tuesday, July 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors and with Dan Brown officiating. Douglas Lamar King, 75, Rossville

Douglas Lamar King of Rossville died Sunday, July 3, 2011. He was 75.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas and was of the Baptist faith. He was previously employed as a truck driver for more than 50 years and loved music and playing the steel guitar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Gertrude King; three sisters, Jewell King, Dot Morris and Kittie Cameron, and brother, Charles King.

Survivors include LaHoma Romine of Flintstone, the mother of Harvey “Tiger” (Nicole) King of Rossville, and Tammy King of Flintstone; other children, Bobby Cameron of Texas and Gail King of Pikeville; sister and brother-in-law, Martha Gean (George) Dean of Lansing, Mich.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Ozella Wooten Voiles, 84, Lookout Valley

Ozella Wooten Voiles of Lookout Valley died Friday, July 8, 2011. She was 84.

Mrs. Voiles was born on May 5, 1927 to the late Leander and Ophelia Wooten in Marshall County, Ala. She resided for many years on Lookout Mountain and had spent the past 42 years in Lookout Valley. She was a member of the Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Voiles; daughter, Muriel Craig; son, Calvin Voiles; five sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Johnny Outlaw of Signal Mountain and Deborah and Glen Fuller of Lookout Valley; son, Benny Voiles of Chickamauga; brother, Billy Wooten of Grant, Ala.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Danny Eugene Callahan, 53, Fairmont

Danny Eugene Callahan of Fairmount died Saturday, July 9, 2011, at the Gordon Hospital in Calhoun. He was 53.

Danny was born March 15, 1958, in Dalton, a son of the late Willis and Evie Rouse Callahan.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Simmons, Jerry Lyons and Ricky Callahan.

Catherine Cook of LaFayette died Thursday, June 7, 2011. She was 81.

She was a member of Chattooga Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Cook.

Richard Ray Dockery, 62, Rock Spring

Richard Ray Dockery of Rock Spring died Sunday, July 10, 2011. He was 62.

He was born to the late Ralph and Ruby Dockery Sr., in LaFayette on March 1, 1949. He was a member of Noble Baptist Fellowship, had retired from Walker County Telephone Company and was former treasurer of the LaFayette Jaycees.

He was also precedeed in death by his brother, Ross Dockery, and granddaughter, Haley Dockery.

Survivors include his loving wife, Pat Hegwood Dockery of Rock Spring; daughter, Marty Kirby of Leesburg, Ala.; two sons, Obie Dockery and Chris (Summer) Dockery of LaFayette; three sisters, Linda (Charles Everett) Wigley of Summerville, Wanda Mitchell of LaFayette and Judy (David) Palmer of LaFayette; brother, Ralph Dockery Jr. of East Ridge, Tenn.; grandchildren, Jake Hightower, Justin Dockery, Jesse Ballew, Blakely Allerding, Corey Dockery, Dillon Hightower, Dainna Kirby, Damon, Daisy, Drake and Dereck Dockery, and great-grandchildren, Lexi and Alley Hightower, Payten and Adien Dockery, Gavin and Bryson Cordell.

Terry Lee Ford Sr., 52, Rossville

Terry Lee Ford Sr. of Rossville died Saturday, July 9, 2011, at a local hospital. He was 52.

He worked at Rainbow Guttering for many years, worked on electric scooters, was published in the Hog Wild Magazine for inventing a scooter with two seats and was also an accomplished artist.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willard Ford Sr., and his grandparents.

Survivors include his daughters, Cassie (Kevin) Keith and Jamie (Donnie) Goins; son, Terry “Bubba” Ford Jr.; mother, Helen Ford Revels; sister, Wanda Jeffries; brothers, Butch (Cathy) Ford, Gene “Mad Dog” Ford and Jimmy (Pam) Ford; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews, and one special nephew, Danny “Dude” Moody, who was like a brother to Terry.

Bernice Dykes Key of Summerville died Thursday, July 7, 2011. She was 67.

Survivors include a daughter, Melissa Key of Summerville; son, James Hewitt of LaFayette; sisters, Marthaleen Dykes of Summerville and Gladis Burgess of LaFayette; brother, William Dykes of LaFayette; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Raymond Uyless Garland, 76, Fort Oglethorpe

Raymond Uyless Garland of Ft. Oglethorpe died Monday, July 11, 2011. He was 76.

He was born to the late Horace and Carrie Doss Garland in Marion County and moved to the Ft. Oglethorpe area at a young age to start his family. He was a member of Ft. Oglethorpe Church of Christ and retired in 1997 from Coats American after 32 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Myra Garland; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Patty Garland of Monticello, Steve and Cindy of Ringgold and Tim and Donna Garland of Ft. Oglethorpe; sister, Pollie Newcom of Ringgold; four grandsons; two granddaughters; four great-grandsons and one niece.

Glenn Jackson of LaFayette died Wednesday, July 6, 2011. He was 57.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Barrett Jackson; parents, Roy and Lucille Jackson; and brother, Robert Jackson.

James William Henderson Sr., 88, Chattanooga, Tenn.

James William Henderson Sr., of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, in a local hospital. He was 88.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area. Mr. Henderson was retired after 38 years in the alloy business. He was a member of the Lookout Valley Masonic Lodge No. F&AM and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ann Henderson; parents, James and Florence Martin Henderson; brother, Clifford Henderson, and a sister, Thelma Gudger.

Ethel Elizabeth Millican Merritt, 86, Chickamauga

Ethel Elizabeth Millican Merritt of Chickamauga died Wednesday, July 6, 2011. She was 86.

She was a member of the Marthada Chapter of the Eastern Star in Chickamauga, and enjoyed watching boys’ and girls’ ball. She loved and enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was of the Methodist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Lizzie Millican; husband, Arthur Merritt; daughters, Elizabeth Elaine Bowling and Glenda Sherrill McWhorter, and brothers, Carl Millican, Robert “Bob” Millican and J. “Bud” Millican.

Survivors include her children, Homer (Betty) Merritt of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Judy (Chuck) Roddy of Chickamauga; son-in-law, Jerry McWhorter of Chickamauga; sister, Mae Hobbs of LaFayette; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

R. Curtis Long, 83, Flintstone

R. Curtis Long of Flintstone died Wednesday, July 6, 2011. He was 83.

He was a lifelong resident of Flintstone, where he was a member of Flintstone Baptist Church and had served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for over 50 years. He was also a member of the men’s Bible class, a member of the Gideons, past president of the AARP local chapter and board member of the Chattanooga Federal Credit Union. He was a past member of the Chattanooga Valley Kiwanis Club and the Rossville Masonic Lodge. Mr. Long was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II, and retired in 1987 from the United States Postal Service as plant manager with over 30 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Deedie and Lela Long; two brothers, Kenneth and Jim Long, and sister, Marlyn Durham.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mildred Long; two sons, Doug (Ginger) Long of Gulf Shores, Ala., and Dennis (Sandy) Long of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren, Logan and Keaton Long of Chattanooga, Jason Reed of Gulf Shores, Ala., Michelle Davis of Rossville and Brandy Helton of Gulf Shores, Ala.; great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Doris (Dot) Parker of Rock Spring died Wednesday, July 6, 2011. She was 83.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Parker; son-in-law, Leon Manley; sisters, Margaret Lane, Mildred Erwin and Claudia Gunther, and brothers, Paul Jr., Jim Oliver and Bill Ezell.

She was a member of Bethel Memorial Baptist Church. She had many years as a faithful servant in the nursery. Her sweet caring spirit will be missed by all.

Survivors include a daughter, Seralyn Manley; granddaughter, Tracy Manley; grandson, Rich Manley, all of Rock Spring, and several nieces and nephews.

Susan Renae Greene, 38, Rossville

Susan Renae Greene of Rossville died July 4, 2011, with an internal intestinal hemorrhage. She was 38.

She was born December 10, 1972, and was affectionately known as Su Su by her mother. She was a lifelong resident of Rossville. She attended Cloud Springs Elementary School, Lakeview Middle School and LFO High School, and earned her GED from the New Vision Program.

She was a member of Lakeview First Baptist Church, was a self-employed seamstress, and played softball with the Lakeview Westside Rec Association for many years.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Grover and Mary Greene, and maternal grandparents, Alpha and Romley Ragland.

Survivors include her husband, Rickey Lee Turberville Sr.; two sons, Joshua Tyler Greene and Rickey Lee Turberville Jr.; two stepchildren, Alex Bethune and Misty Bethune; father, Sonny (Jody) Greene of Chickamauga; mother, Mary Greene of Rossville; brother, Grover Hugh Greene III “Tray” of Columbia, S.C.; two nephews; a host of friends, and her beloved Chihuahuas, Diamond and Precious.

Ralph Harold Abbott, 83, Rossville

Ralph Harold Abbott of Rossville died Friday, July 1, 2011. He was 83.

He had lived in the north Georgia area for most of his life and was of the Church of God faith. He was an Army veteran, having served during the Korean War, and enjoyed fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Horton and Mary Abbott; four brothers, Fred, Bennett, William and Marcell Abbott; two sisters, Margaret Irene Abbott and Ola Gilbert; his first wife, Iris White Abbott, and his second wife, Minnie Jeffrey Abbott.

Survivors include his two sisters and brother-in-law, Myrtle (Henry) Abbott and Mary Lee Adkins, all of Rossville, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services: Tuesday, July 5, at 11 a.m. in the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel with Rev. Roy Cope officiating. Burial: 1 p.m. EST in the Little River Cemetery in Mentone, Ala. John Ronald Biggs, 70, Etowah

John Ronald Biggs of Etowah died Tuesday, June 28, 2011. He was 70.

He had lived in the Chattanooga area for most of his life before moving to Etowah in 1989. He was a charter member of Westview Baptist Church in Chattanooga and, with the loving support of Linda T. Biggs, helped organize the areawide cancer support group in Etowah. He retired from Combustion Engineering in 1986 after more than 21 years as a boilermaker, and was an Air Force veteran, having served during the Vietnam era. He was also a heart transplant recipient in May of 1996. He was a devoted father and grandfather who will be sadly missed by all who knew him. The family would like to give a special thanks to the doctors and staff of UAB Hospital’s heart transplant team for all the love and support that they provided.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Pearl Biggs, and several siblings.

Survivors include his children, Chris Biggs of Ooltewah, Tenn., Kellie (Don) Giles of Hixson, Tenn., and Brent Biggs of Etowah, Tenn.; sister, Katherine Dye of Etowah, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Tyler Johnston, Blake Buckner, Mason Biggs and Braden Biggs; special friend, Linda Tatum Biggs, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mildred Goins of Rossville died Friday, July 1, 2011, in a local assisted living facility. She was 84.

She was a longtime resident of Rossville and attended the Cooper Heights Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Goins.

She was born in Dallas to the late Lonnie Kelly Sr. and Mary Francis Gilley Kelly. Jean lived most of her life in the Kensington area and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Shirley Daniel, and brother, Lonnie “Bubba” Kelly Jr.

Carl Pittman of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Sunday, July 3, 2011. He was 84.

He was born to the late Charlie S. and Rebecca Johnson Pittman in Jasper, Tenn., on April 4, 1927. He retired from Standard Coosa Thatcher after 36 years of service and was of the Baptist faith.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Arbelle Stilley Pittman, and several brothers and sisters.

Larry Edward Miller, 61, Rising Fawn

Larry Edward Miller of Rising Fawn died Saturday July 2, 2011, at his residence. He was 61.

A lifelong resident of the Lookout Mountain area, he was a former employee of Yates Bleachery where he worked for three years, a member of Lookout Missionary Baptist Church and an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Viola Matthews Miller.

Ella Pittman Myers, 87, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Ella Pittman Myers of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Thursday, June 30, 2011, at her residence. She was 87.

A resident of the Chattanooga area for most of her life, she was a nurse’s aide at Hamilton County Nursing Home for over 20 years and of the Church of God faith.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. Dal Rayford Pittman Sr.; second husband, Dewey Myers; daughter, Sharon Wynn, and parents, A.C. and Sarah Elizabeth Eaves Morton.

Survivors include four children, Dal Rayford Pittman Jr. (Charlotte) of Knoxville, Tenn., Ronald David Pittman of East Ridge, Tenn., Linda Aaron (Tommy) of East Ridge, Tenn., and Alice Clinton (Jimmy) of East Ridge, Tenn.; one sister, Odell Tankersley of Fairview; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.L. “Pete” Stanfield; parents, Robert Lee and Agnes McPherson Southerland; seven brothers; one sister; two half brothers and one half sister.

Harry Eldon Rogers of Chickamauga died Friday, July 1, 2011. He was 90.

He had lived in the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas for most of his life and was a member of the East Lake Methodist Church. He retired from Koehring in 1982 as a machinist after more than 25 years of service and was past master of the East Lake Masonic Lodge #698 F&AM. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 71 years, Annie Rogers; son, Carmon Eldon Rogers, both of Chickamauga; two sisters, Louise Watkins of Dekalb County, Ala., and Dorothy Sizemore of Chickamauga; three grandchildren, Chip, Carl and Julie Rogers; three great-grandchildren, Cannon, Mallory and Ava Rogers, and several nieces and nephews.

He had lived most of his life in the north Georgia area and was of the Baptist faith. He was previously employed with Coleman Construction Company for more than 20 years as a welder and was a loving son, brother, father and grandfather who will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hugh Snider Sr.

Jack “Hot Wheels” Wilson of Rossville died Sunday, July 3, 2011. He was 77.

He was a lifelong resident of Rossville and was of the Baptist faith. Jack retired from Chattanooga Glass Company in 1979 after 20 years and was know as “Bicycle Santa.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sanford and Nandee Liner Wilson; daughter, Kathy Wilson, and grandson, Tim Wallace.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Korenda Wilson; children, Cody Wilson of Rossville, Cindy Forkner (Larry) of Rock Spring and Darlene Wallace of East Ridge; stepsons, Steve Wilson of East Ridge and Matthew McClean of Cleveland; brother, Leon Wilson (Judy) of Rossville; 36 foster children and several nieces and nephews.

Jimmy “20/20” Stephen Callahan of Chattanooga, Tenn. died Wednesday, June 22, 2011. He was 64.

He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn. to the late Charles and Mary Callahan and was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Burrows.

Survivors include his children, Lashan Coker of Fort Oglethorpe, Jackie Blancett of Chattanooga, Tenn., Steve Callahan of Ringgold, Kacee Callahan of Flintstone, David Jackson of Mississippi; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a niece and a nephew.

Ann Eason of Chickamauga died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at her home. She was 71.

Donna Jean Madaris Stoker of LaFayette died Wednesday, June 29, 2011. She was 61.

She was born to the late Ralph and Katherine Madaris in Chickamauga on June 26, 1950. She was of the Church of God faith, worked as a transporter at Hutcheson Medical Center for nine years, and loved spending time with her family.

She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Max and Marion Stoker.

Billy Ray Tucker of Rossville died Thursday, June 30, 2011, at his home. He was 63.

Billy worked for Southern Champion Trays for 15 years, and was preceded in death by his father, Walter Tucker and son, David Tucker.

Dorothy Ruth Proulx of East Ridge, Tenn. died Monday, June 27, 2011. She was 85.

She was born on Aug. 16, 1925, in the small mining town of Flat Creek, Ala. After marrying the love of her life, they traveled and lived in many places before residing in East Ridge, Tenn.. She lived her life as a Christian and attended Unity Baptist Church. Known to many as Mom, Granny, Mama Proulx, and Dot, she had such a loving nature and quick wit and will be missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband; mother and father; brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her daughters, Martha Doss, Sandra Chandler, and Barbara Anderson; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
