A Chickamauga woman was arrested by Fort Oglethorpe police after admitting to stealing approximately $1,100 in cash from the Fort Oglethorpe Wal-Mart over a span of six months while working there as a cashier, police said.

According to Fort Oglethorpe police reports:

Utacha Mariea Gilliland, 42, of 205 Pearl St. was arrested June 21 and charged with theft by taking after an in-house investigation revealed that she had been “skimming” from the cash registers since January.

Investigators met with the Wal-Mart officials regarding the theft on June 17, was notified of the theft, and that Gilliland had been interviewed by a Wal-Mart asset protection officer, as well as the store’s assistant manager on June 14.

Gilliland confessed to taking about $1,100 from the registers over the six-month period.

On June 21 detective Tammy Davis contacted Gilliland and an interview followed at the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department.

During the interview, Gilliland was shown a copy of the written confession she had provided to Wal-Mart man-agement and informed of the video surveillance that had been obtained of her committing the crime.

Gilliland stated during the interview that she stole the money because her husband was ill and her family was having financial difficulties as a result of that illness.
