James H. “Jim” Runyan Jr., 78, Rossville
James H. “Jim” Runyan Jr. of Rossville died Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at his residence. He was 78.
Mr. Runyan was a native and lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas and was a member and Sunday school teacher at Lakeview First Baptist Church for many years. He was retired from Red Food Stores following 26 years of service and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Jim was a volunteer with the Ft. Oglethorpe Fire Department for over 10 years and was a member of the Brainerd Optimist Club. He was also a former deputy with the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Department.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Mary Ann Runyan and Beatrice Pittman Runyan, and parents, James H. Runyan Sr. and Viola Mae Runyan.
Survivors include his children, Robin Cooley of Rossville, Stephen Runyan of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Jerry Runyan of Ringgold; stepsons, Houston (Pat) Bennett of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Eugene (Lynn) Stephens of Dunlap; sisters, Barbara (Robert) Corbin of Rossville and Carolyn (Ewell) Beaty of Huntsville; grandchildren, Todd Cooley of Rossville, Rachel (Ed) Runyan Clark of Chickamauga, Devin Runyan of Ringgold and Kelsey Runyan of Chattanooga, Tenn., along with several nieces and nephews.

Virginia Clark, LaFayette
Virginia Clark of LaFayette died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at her family’s home.
Jenny was a resident of Smyrna for nearly 50 years where she and her husband, Charles, raised their family, attended church and were involved in various community activities. An accomplished poet, she was awarded for many of her works and recognized as a distinguished writer through the National Library of Poetry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; parents, Matthew and Ella Jane Coleman; seven sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include her only daughter, Teina Clark Wright and her husband Keith; grandson, Brandon Wright and his wife, Michelle; two great-grandsons, Jacob and Archer Wright, and one brother, Harold Coleman of Rustburg, Va.
Memorial service: Sunday, April 3, at Fair Oaks UMC in Marietta at 2 p.m. Burial: Monday, April 4, at 1 p.m., at Georgia Memorial Cemetery on Cobb Parkway at Windy Hill Road. All are welcome to come and celebrate her life. Arrangements: Wallis-Wilbanks Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Geneva M. Slaughter of Rossville died Sunday, March 27, 2011. She was 87.
Mrs. Slaughter was a native of Arkansas and had lived in Rossville for the past 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Slaughter; daughter, Mary Ruskaup; sisters, Jessie Beatrice Adcock and Molly Molean Rogers, and brother, Clarence Orlando Turner.

Laura Richardeen (Rich) Watt, 78
Laura Richardeen (Rich) Watt died January 6, 2011, from complications that arose after she defeated cancer. She was 78. She was born Nov. 9, 1932 to Richard Ezra and Laura Nettie McGlaughlin Holt at home in rural Potomac, Ill. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Richardeen was raised in Illinois and attended school in Armstrong. She lived in Vermilion County for 28 years, where she married Charles Gordon Creighton and they had 3 daughters. They later divorced and Richardeen married Robert E. Watt and welcomed his daughter, Robbin, into her heart. Together they moved to Pinellas County, Fla., where Richardeen lived for the next 42 years.
She retired from Palms of Pasadena Hospital where she worked in the insurance office and the admitting department. Richardeen moved to Ringgold for three years and then to St. George, Utah, for six years, where she was residing upon her death. She was widowed in 1977 and spent the remainder of her life lovingly caring for her family and spending cherished time with them.
Richardeen enjoyed reading, playing games, and spoiling her beloved dog, Susie Q. Richardeen was a member of the Church of Christ and her faith was an important part of her life. She was such a great source of encouragement to all of us, so loving and giving of herself. She will always live on in our hearts.
Survivors include her children, Sheryl (Richard) McGaughey of Ringgold, Lynn (Richard) Oehmann of St. George, Utah, Kathy (Daniel) Tanasz of Brookside, Utah, and Robbin (Roger) Williams of Bluffton, S.C.; her grandchildren, Michael, Angela, Brandy, Sandra, Sean, Christopher, Sara, Nicole, Renee and Robert, her great-grandchildren, Elijah, Noah, Natalie, Maxwell, Wesley, Alexis, Evan, Cane, Andrew, Jake and Danielle; her sisters, Lillian Criblez and Helen (Hardin) James of Potomac, Ill., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; her sister Evelyn Butler and her two brothers-in-law, Allan Criblez and Ray Butler.

Clara L. Baldwin, 88, of Ringgold, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2011 in a local hospital.
A native of Marshall County, Ala., she had spent the greater part of her life in the Ringgold area and was a member of Community Baptist Church. Mrs. Baldwin was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Ella Vaught, and three brothers.
Survivors include her husband of seventy years, Buford Baldwin; daughters, Patricia (LeVaughn) Forrester of LaFayette and Dianne (Frank) Gruetter of Chattanooga; sister, Ruby Yancy of Ft. Ola Anderson Sampson, 100, Rossville
Ola Anderson Sampson of Rossville died Sunday, March 27, 2011, surrounded by her family in the comfort of her home. She was 100.
She was born Nov. 25, 1910, in Plevna, Ala., the eldest of 10 children, and had lived in Rossville for the past 70 years. Ola was a loving mother and devoted wife. She was a longtime member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church. As an active member of Senior Neighbors, she loved entertaining fellow members along with patients at NHC Nursing Home in Rossville. Ola loved nature, especially flowers, and was an avid gardener and a great cook. During her life she entered many contests and on the national radio program “Queen for a Day,” won her family’s first electric stove.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, William F. Anderson and Richard M. Sampson, and sons, Eugene Anderson, Troy Lee Anderson and Ray Anderson.
Survivors include her daughter Pat A. Anderson of Rossville; daughter and son-in-law Sheila Anderson and Kenneth “Tom” Hickman of Chickamauga; son, Aubrey Dean Anderson of Chickamauga; brother and sister-in-law, William and Mae McBride of Cartersville; sister, Virginia Martin of Rossville; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Gary Poteet of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Thursday March 24, 2011, at his residence. He was 57.
A lifelong resident of the north Georgia/Chattanooga area, he attended Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and worked in construction for several years.
He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Robert and Annie Lee Brown; father, James Terrell Poteet, and sister, Karen B. Hess.

Arnold Willard York, 66, Chickamauga
Arnold Willard York of Chickamauga died Saturday, March 26, 2011. He was 66.
He was born in Flat Rock, Ala., to the late Mose and Bunia York, and had lived in the Chickamauga area for most of his life. He was of the Baptist faith. He was an Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam era and retired from Aladdin Mills as a supervisor in 1996 after more than 35 years of service. He enjoyed golf, playing and coaching softball, building bird houses and working in his yard. He was a devoted father and grandfather, who will be sadly missed by all that knew him.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Archie and William York.
Survivors include his children and spouses, Duane (Ann) York of Tunnel Hill, Angela (Mike) Daniel, Kimberly (Alex) Benitez and Edna Perry, all of Chickamauga; brother, Leon York of Whiteside, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Matt, Mercedes, Courtnee, Colby, Jessica, Vanesa, Milagro and Rosalinda; special nephew, Donnie Frazier, and several other nieces and nephews.

Evelyn Noblitt of East Ridge, Tenn., died Thursday, March 24, 2011, in a local hospital. She was 81.
She was a native of Valley Head, Ala., and had lived most of her life in East Ridge. Mrs. Noblitt was a longtime member of New Covenant Baptist Church and attended Peoples Baptist Church. She was employed with Kleen-A-Matic in East Ridge as their clerk with over 40 years of service.

Doris Lillian Pickens, 88, Rossville
Doris Lillian Pickens of Rossville died Thursday, March 24, 2011. She was 88.
She was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, to the late Harry and Audrey Brownell, and had lived in Warner Robins, Ga., for most of her life before moving to the Rossville area in 1985. She was a member of Fort Oglethorpe United Methodist Church and was previously the director of the kindergarten classes at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins for more than 11 years. She was also a volunteer for Hutcheson Medical Center’s gift shop for more than 11 years. She held several positions with the AARP and was a devoted member of the Daylily Society. She was a wonderful cook and a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and will be sadly missed by all that knew her.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Pickens, and two sisters, Wanda Crosby and Joyce Jenkins.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Steve (Fran) Pickens of Fort Oglethorpe and Gary (Linn) Pickens of Harrison, Tenn.; sister and brother-in-law, Diane (Bill) Brown of Gallipolis, Ohio; four grandchildren, Stacy Pickens, Michelle Pickens, T.J. He was a member and deacon of Mission Ridge Baptist Church, a former DJ at WJOC AM Radio Station, better known as “Wally Gator,” and former host of the Gospel Jubilee on a local cable channel.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ann Scruggs; parents, Winifred and Viola Scruggs, and sister, Mary Ann Pence.

Anna Bell Honeycutt of Ringgold died Monday, March 21, in the loving presence of her family. She was 83.
She was a daughter of the late Noel and Lillie Revels Turner and was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas. Mrs. Honeycutt was a charter member of Parkway Baptist Temple and a member of the auditorum class. She enjoyed camping, fishing and homemaking with her loving family.
She was preceded in death by brother, George Golden, and sisters, Betty Anderson and Evelyn Webster.
Survivors include her loving husband of 65 years, Milton O. Honeycutt; sons, Jerry (Sue) Honeycutt of East Brainerd, Tenn., and Larry (Leesa) Honeycutt of Ft. Gene proudly served in and retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. He then continued his expertise in the mechanic field as a Texaco gas station owner, followed by several years in pest control in Shreveport, La. He was a devoted husband and father, loving his many grandchildren with all his heart.
He was preceded in death by his son, Charles “Chuck” Swafford Jr.

James Bolich of Rossville died Saturday, March 19, 2011, at his home. He was 80.
A native of Wadsworth, Ohio, he had been a resident of the north Georgia area for over 30 years. He was a retired letter carrier with the Postal Service after 29 years of service, and was a U. S. Air Force veteran. Mr. Bolich was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Mary Meager Bolich; sister, Ruth Bailey, and brother, Don Bolich.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Louise Bolich; a son, Ron (Darlene) Bolich of East Ridge, Tenn., and a twin sister, Marilyn Siders of Wadsworth, Ohio; three grandchildren, Amanda (Nick) Meabon, Angela (Mark) Dorsey and R.J. (Shelley) Bolich, and five great-grandchildren, Olivia Meabon, Madison and Audrey Dorsey and Evan and Brody Bolich.

Carl Franklin Tilley Jr., 88, Fort Oglethorpe
Carl Franklin Tilley Jr. 88 of Fort Oglethorpe died March 17, 2011, at his home. He was 88.
He was a member of Fort Oglethorpe United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked most of his life as a printer. He later retired from Hutcheson Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Josephine Worrell Tilley; brother, Ronald Tilley; sister, Margaret Tilley King, and a son, Art Tilley.

Katherine Baker Morgan, 83, East Ridge, Tenn.
Katherine Baker Morgan of East Ridge, Tenn. died Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at her residence with her children by her side. She was 83.
A native and lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and East Ridge areas, Mrs. Morgan was a member of Thankful Memorial Episcopal Church and had served in many capacities for many years including, secretary and treasurer , and communications officer as well as numerous committees. She and her late husband of 63 years, George Morgan, were well-known philanthropists in the tri-state area, and were co-owners of George Morgan Properties. In addition to owning several businesses herself, Mrs. Morgan was involved with many service and political arenas. Her passions in life were her family, gardening, construction work, the outdoors and farming.
In addition to her husband George Morgan, she was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Rose Baker; brothers, Clarence Russell Baker, Raymond Glen Baker and William Frank Baker; sister, Louise Ophelia Posey; grandson, Rodney Keith Morgan; daughter-in-law, Sharon Lorrain Morgan; and son-in-law, Mike Olinger.

Bertie Cowart Abney of Ringgold died Wednesday, March 16, 2011. She was 90.
She was born August 22, 1920 to the late Tom and Amy Cowart in Ringgold. Mrs. Abney was a member of Friendship Primitive Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking and sewing and was a member of the Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Abney Sr.; son, James Howard Abney Jr.; grandson, Roger Lee Abney Jr.

She was retired from teaching after 35 years of service in the Walker and Whitfield County school systems.

James Samuel “Sammy” Carroll of Ringgold died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at his residence. He was 66.
He was an active member of Clearview Baptist Church and enjoyed assisting the members of the Sonshine Club. Sammy was an avid Alabama football fan, fisher and hunter. He was a loving husband, father, brother and uncle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Samuel Carroll and Gladys Yeager Carroll.

A resident of the Smyrna area for the past 11 years, he was formerly of Ringgold. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, an employee of the U.S. Postal Service for 22 years and was of the Baptist faith.

Ruby was born in East Ridge, Tenn., Sept. 20, 1922, and was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area. She was a member of Hickory Valley Community Church where she was active in the women's Bible class.

Betty Dodd West of Grayson passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011. She was 83.
A native of the Flintstone area, Betty lived in the Chattanooga, Tenn. area most of her life and has lived in the Grayson area for the past seven years with her daughter. She was a former employee of First Tennessee Bank and a former member of Chattanooga Valley Church of Christ and later Monroe Georgia Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W.T. West; son, Terry West; and parents, Gordon and Mary Alice Foster Dodd.

Paul “Jack” Johnson of Chickamauga died Monday, March 14, 2011, at his residence. He was 73.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia area where he was a brick mason with J&J Masonry. He was a member of Pilgrim Way Baptist Church and had also attended Revival Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his son, Tony Johnson; parents, Claude and Lily Mae Johnson; stepsons, Johnny and Randy Morgan; brother, Charles Shubert, and sister, Betty Mae Johnson.

Grover James Newman, 71, Chickamauga
Grover James Newman of Chickamauga died Monday, March 14, 2011, in a local hospital. He was 71.
He was born on April 21, 1939 in Paulding County, to the late Vance William Newman and Annie Ruth Coalson Newman. He graduated from Rockmart High School in 1957. He had resided for over forty-five years in Chickamauga, where he was a former member of Fellowship Baptist Church and a current member of First Baptist Church of Chickamauga. Grover began working for Georgia Power Company in 1959 and retired after thirty-six years of service as local manager. He was an active member of the community. He served as president of the Walker County Chamber of Commerce and was a past member of the Chickamauga Business and Professional Association. He was a member and the past master of Crawfish Springs Masonic Lodge F&AM No. 300.
Grover’s true passion was the Chickamauga Lions Club, where he had forty-three years of perfect attendance. He served as club president, vice-president, treasurer and a member of the board of directors. In addition to serving in state and regional positions, Grover was a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow and a member of the District 18-A Hall of Fame. He received numerous club, district, state and international awards as well. He received the Ervin Crumbly Medal in 2010, the highest honor given by the Lions of Georgia. Through his work with the Lions Club and his community involvement, Grover cherished that he was able to touch the lives of many people.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Wilma Robinson and Shirley Newman.
Survivors include his wife, Darline Newman of Chickamauga; son, Jimmy Lee Newman of Rockmart; daughters and son-in-law, Joanna Lynn Newman Brock and Harold “Duck” Brock of Cartersville and Leah Brooke Newman of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Kristy and Michael Williams, Ashley and Deidra Wooten, all of Rockmart, Jared and Jennifer Brock of Cartersville and Randy and Amanda Brock of Rome; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Eva Patrica “Pat” Petty, 61 of Ringgold departed this life Monday, March 14, 2011. She was 61.
She was born in Dekalb County, Ala., to the late Clarence and Eva Lance, and was preceded in death by her husband, Jeffery Lynn Petty, and sister, Clarcy Jean Hughes. Pat was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her sons, Michael (Jill) Petty of Ooltewah and John Gregory Petty of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Sydney and Jack Petty, whom she dearly loved; sister, Sheila Morse, and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Royl Redden, 91, Rossville
Margaret Royl Redden of Rossville died Monday, March 14, 2011, in a local health care facility. She was 91.
She had been a resident of Rossville for eight years after coming from California. Mrs. Redden was a retired nurse from UCLA Medical Center and was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Sherman of Ft. Oglethorpe, Peggy Sumida of Fort Oglethorpe, and Karen Redden of Portland, Ore.; son and daughter-in-law, Eddie (Elaine) Redden of Marietta; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
