Here is the full text of the statement:

“Mid morning today at LaFayette High School, a message indicating a bomb threat was discovered in a boys restroom inside the main building. Immediately an administrator and a member of the Walker County Sheriff's Department investigated the scene finding a clear bomb threat and a suspicious device. At that time Emergency services and 911 were informed and the building was quickly evacuated.

“The City of LaFayette Police Department and bomb division arrived on scene and lead a thorough investigation including the use of a bomb detection canine. When police investigators deemed the threat a clear concern, students and staff were moved to a farther evacuation site and students were dismissed for the day.

“Superintendent Melissa Mathis, Director of Administrative Services Chris Jones, Director of Human Resources Craig Davoulas were on the scene to assist in a swift and safe dismissal. Transportation Supervisor Kevin Richardson employed the emergency dismissal protocol calling in all buses and drivers to the LaFayette High campus.

“Parents were informed by Walker County Schools' electronic parent information system, SchoolCast, that placed a call to everyone in the LaFayette High School SchoolCast information system.

“Students had departed campus by noon. Shortly thereafter, officials completed their sweep and declared the building safely cleared

“All Board of Education policies and protocol were followed and the situation was successfully handled. Mrs. Mathis, in a statement to the staff, said that she is very concerned about the student or students and the behavior that created this situation. She thanked them for their quick and competent actions. Then she called upon the staff, students and parents to identify the student or students responsible for this dangerous and illegal action and any others who may need counseling or assistance with this type of behavior.

“Anyone with information concerning the bomb threat at LaFayette High this morning should contact the City of LaFayette Department of Public Safety at 706-639-1540 or contact Resource Officer Billy Mullis at billymullis@walkerschools.org.”
