Janice Delores “Granny Red” Smith of LaFayette died Wednesday, February 13, 2013. She was 68.
She was born in Atlanta to the late Earl and Blanche Groover on June 18, 1944.

Kenneth Lavaughn Loggins, 76, LaFayette
Kenneth Lavaughn Loggins of LaFayette died Thursday, February 14, 2013, at his residence. He was 76.
He was a member and deacon at LaFayette First Baptist Church. He taught Sunday School at Cozy Manor for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn Loggins and Idell Loggins Copeland; brother, Rev. Harlin Loggins.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Lewis Loggins; daughter, Lynne (Larry) Murkerson of LaFayette; son, Ken (Yvonne) Loggins of Marietta; sister, Bobbie (Dewey) Everett of LaFayette; brother, Don Loggins of Atlanta; three grandsons, Jason Gilstrap, Patrick Loggins, Kevin Loggins; one granddaughter, Kelly Loggins; sister-in-law, Barbara Loggins; and several nieces and nephews.

Wilma G. Watkins, 78, Fort Oglethorpe
Wilma G. Watkins of Fort Oglethorpe died Monday, February 11, 2013, at her home. She was 78.
She was born in DeKalb County, Alabama, to the late William and Rebecca Ramsey, and was a member of Boynton Church of God in Ringgold.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack Watkins; and sons, Ricky and Thomas Watkins.
Survivors include her children, Herbert (Patricia) Watkins of Whitwell, Wanda (Roger) Johnson, Lonnie (Sherry) Watkins all of Fort Oglethorpe, Linda (Donny) Chambers of Rossville; brothers, Johnny and Ralph Ramsey of Hixson; grandchildren, Amie Dodson, Keith Watkins, Shane Egeland, Dawn Bowman, Candice Chambers, Amanda Alexander, Daniel Evett; great-grandchildren, Danielle Bowman, Daniel and Dakota Dodson, Lexi Alexander; and several nieces and nephews.

R.B. Castleberry, 90, Ringgold
R.B. "Jack" Castleberry Ringgold died Tuesday, February 12, 2013. He was 90.
He was born in Rising Fawn to the late John and Sally Castleberry. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during WWII where he received three Bronze Battle Stars and a Purple Heart along with many other decorations for his service there, and later owned and operated Castleberry Construction Company here in the north Georgia area.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Rubye Castleberry; seven brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include his children, Raymond Castleberry and Donna Balch, both of Ringgold; siblings, Dot (J.B.) Roach of Fort Oglethorpe, Melba (Jack) Harp of Rossville, Carl Castleberry of Rising Fawn; grandchildren, Michael (Tonya) Castleberry, Scott Balch, Phillip (Lori) Balch, great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Amanda Castleberry, and many nieces and nephews.

A.C. "Red" Johnson of Rossville died Tuesday, February 12, 2013. He was 82.
He was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the late Benjamin and Myrtle Johnson. He retired from Cobble Tufting Machine Company after 30-plus years of service there and he was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his loving wife of 21 years, Marie Brodie Johnson; children, Debbie Coppinger, Joan Abbott, all of Rossville, Wanda Mitchell, Penny Cordell, both of LaFayette, Tom Brodie of Raleigh, N.C., Larry Brodie of Ringgold; sisters, Gertrude Oliver of Trenton, Louise Coats of Hooker; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

Furman Gene Raines of Chattanooga died Wednesday, February 6, 2013. He was 60.
He touched the hearts of all those around him with his friendship, honesty and love of life.

Phyllis Gail Waters of LaFayette died Friday, February 8, 2013. She was 54.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Verda Ladd Waters.
She graduated from LaFayette High School in 1976. She has an associate’s degree in business from Dalton State College and worked for Datel Communication in Chickamauga.
Survivors include her sisters, Jimmie Denson, Bobbie Davis, both of LaFayette, Vickie McGlee of Hixon, Dena Ramey of Trion; brothers, Wayne Waters, Walter Waters, and Stevie Waters, all of LaFayette; 11 nieces and four nephews; and several great nieces and nephews also survive.

Gerald Zan Perry, Jr., 34, Rossville
Gerald Zan Perry, Jr., of Rossville died Thursday, February 7, 2013. He was 34.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas and was a member of Green's Lake Road Church of Christ. He was employed with Convergy's Corporation for more than seven years and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He could brighten up any room by just walking in and loved joking around and making people laugh. He was extremely intelligent and loved building computers and was an avid gamer.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lewis Barbee; grandparents, Howard Zan and Lura Reba Perry and step-grandmother, Johnnie Burns.

Franklyn Sherman Ensley, 83, Ringgold
Franklyn “Jack” Sherman Ensley of Ringgold died Friday, February 8, 2013. He was 83.
A lifelong resident of the Ringgold area, he was a retired employee of Combustion Engineering where he worked for 41 years, was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of New Liberty Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Roy and Hattie Jane Carpenter Ensley; brothers, Lyle, Lee, Crawford and William Roy Jr. Ensley; sisters, Florene Presley and Lila Mae Carlock.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Barbara June Scoggins Ensley of Ringgold; daughter, Charlotte (Melvin) McGuffey of Ringgold; son, Steve (Donna) Ensley of LaFayette; two sisters, Doris (James) Lake and Melba Jean (Bill) Davidson, all of Ringgold; brother, Howard (Mary) Ensley of Ringgold; three grandchildren, Judith Henson, Madeline Ensley and McIver Ensley; great-grandson, Rowdy Henson; and several nieces and nephews.

Vernon Stanley Moore, 68, Ringgold
Vernon Stanley Moore of Ringgold died Friday February 8, 2013. He was 68.
A lifelong resident of the north Georgia area, he was born in LaFayette and graduated from Berry High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in Vietnam and worked for Ernest Holmes for over 25 years. While with Ernest Holmes he designed and patented several items. After Holmes closed, he started his own business VMX Service. He loved working on old cars and building hot rods with his son, Stanley. People would call from all around asking for information and parts. He loved to entertain people with stories.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Claudia West Moore; brother, Sammie Moore; and sister, Sandra Moore.
Survivors include his spouse, Linda Moore of Ringgold; two children, Stanley Moore of Ringgold, and Scarlett Farrow-Bell of Tracy, Calif., three stepsons, William Smith of Crossville, Tenn., Charlie Smith of Florida and Terry Smith of Georgia; sister, Arlene Moore of Ringgold; three brothers, Glynn Moore of Martinez, Mike Moore of Chatsworth, and Tim Moore of Clovis, New Mexico; 12 grandchildren, Courtney Farrow, Patrick Farrow, Stacy Mitchell, Shelbi Smith, Mallory Smith, Garrett Smith, Tara Smith, Kristofer Smith, Zack Smith, Zane Smith, Amber Smith and Megan Smith; one great-granddaughter, one great-great-granddaughter, several nieces and nephews.

Richard Alan Winkler, 56, LaFayette
Richard Alan Winkler of LaFayette died Friday, February 8, 2013. He was 56.
He had lived in the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas for most of his life and was a member of Community Baptist Church in Rock Spring. He was previously employed with Birmingham Hide and Tallow as a manager and truck driver for more than 26 years and was a member of the Christian Motorcyclist Association. He loved riding motorcycles, spending time with his church family and was a man after God's own heart. He was a loving and devoted husband and father who will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father, William "Bill" Winkler, and brother, Billy Loveless.
Survivors include his loving wife of more than 27 years, Teresa "Terry" Winkler of LaFayette; mother, Frances Winkler of Ringgold; sons and daughter-in-law, Kreis and (Amanda) Winkler of Chickamauga, and Adam Winkler of LaFayette; brother and sister-in-law, Ron and (Becky) Winkler of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.; sisters and brother-in-law, Ann and (Randy) Helms of LaFayette and Judy Winkler of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.

Buford Lebron Nabors, 71, Signal Mountain
Buford Lebron Nabors of Signal Mountain died Saturday, February 9, 2013, at his residence. He was 71.
He was a native of Rossville and a graduate of Rossville High School. He attended the University of Chattanooga and was retired from Ashland Oil where he served as general manager for 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville and was a world traveler and loved to take his “road trips.”
His parents, Clymer and Lorene Crawford Nabors, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his longtime companion and “sweetheart,” Cherie Gilliam of Signal Mountain; brother, Bob (Virginia) Nabors of Ringgold; nieces, Kelly (Bryan) Lawler and Cathy Nabors of Ringgold, and Cindy Nabors of Harrison; nephew, Rob (Darlene) Nabors of Chickamauga; several great-nieces and great-nephews and a host of friends.

DF Vanhorn of Trion died Sunday, February 10, 2013. He was 75.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Mae Vanhorn; sister, Eddie Mae Vanhorn; parents, Dok Robert and Fannie Bell Queen Vanhorn.
Survivors include his daughter, Evelyn (Grady) Brown of Trion; sons, David (Lola) Vanhorn of Trion, and Bobby (Karen) Vanhorn of Gore; sister, Gussie Vanhorn of LaFayette, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and, several nieces and nephews also survive.

John Hayes of Chickamauga died Sunday, February 3, 2013. He was 92.
He was the last of his generation.

Barbara Ann Haire of Rossville died Monday, February 4, 2013, at her home. She was 79.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Chandler Haire.
Survivors include her children, Diana (Randall) Ford of Harrison, Jackie (Shawn) Rampley of East Brainerd, David Haire of Eton; grandchildren, Dalton, Daniel, Allison, Stephanie, Christina and Trip; and one great-grandchild.

Rev. J.W. Timms, 81, Rock Spring
Rev. J.W. Timms of Rock Spring died Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at Hutcheson Medical Center in Fort Oglethorpe. He was 81.
He was born on March 11, 1931, son of the late John Arthur and Bulah Shepherd Timms.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Lorene Hamrick Timms; and two brothers, Herbert Timms and Herman Timms. He was a retired Church of God minister. He began his work life at Echota Cotton Mills, and then served as pastor of many churches, including Adairsville Church of God in 1957; Columbus in 1966; Cedartown in 1966; Macon in 1976; LaFayette in 1977; College Street Church of God in Calhoun in 1987; Riverside Church of God in Atlanta in 1989; and he then retired in 1997.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Connie Timms of Cedartown; his daughter and son-in-law, Trudy and Tony Snider of Rock Spring; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Linda Timms of Resaca, and Aaron and Carlotta Timms of Calhoun; five sisters, Betty Burton and her husband Charlie of Calhoun, Lucille Hall of Calhoun, Mary Jones and her husband Moody of Calhoun, Hazel Burnette and her husband Eddie of Fayetteville, and Margie Dutton and her husband Kenneth of Calhoun; sister-in-law, Carolyn Timms of Ranger; grandchildren, Laci Hayden and her husband Matt, Chad Timms, Jeremy Glenn and his wife Tara, and Daniel Glenn and his wife Careomy; great-grandchildren, Dylan Hayden, Lindsey Hayden, McKenzie Glenn, Gavin Glenn, and Dawson and Dakota Timms.
Funeral services: Saturday, Feb. 9, at noon from the College Street Church of God in Calhoun with Ministers Delton Harne, Ed Pasley, and Jeremy Singletary officiating. Kathryn “Melb” Melvylene Brown of LaFayette died Tuesday, February 5, 2013. She was 81.
She was retired from the LaFayette City Police Department were she worked for many years as an administrative assistant. She was a member of the Harbor Lights Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. J.R. Brown; father and mother, James, and Diver Bernice Shaw Alsabrook.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and John Allen “Dooley” White of LaFayette; grandchildren, Robert (Christy) White, Amanda White (William) Beyer; great-grandchildren, Jaxon, and Grayson White, all of LaFayette; sister, Jean Wilson; nephew, Rickey Wilson, both of LaFayette; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Billy and Reba Brown, Rudolph Blanks, all of Alabama, and Sue Brown, of Ringgold; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was born in Chickamauga on October 24, 1935, to the late Luetta and Roy Brock. He was a lifelong resident of Chickamauga. He was a 1954 graduate of his beloved Gordon Lee High School. His 56 years in the trucking industry, included 28 years at Lee-Smith of Chattanooga and retiring from his own business in 2011. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and the Good News Sunday School class. He was a member of The American Legion Post 0217 and The Sons of Confederate Veterans.

James Paul “JP” McCutcheon of Rossville died Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at his residence. He was 78.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia area. He was a United States Air Force veteran and while serving in the Air Force he began his career as a munitions expert. After his service in the military, he owned and operated several local businesses primarily in the used car industry. His passions in life include his family, drag racing, working on all types of vehicles and anything mechanical. He was always eager to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris McCutcheon; parents, L.P. and Blanche McCutcheon; sisters, Judy K. Willis and Marjorie Cooper.

Tommy Gordy of Chickamauga died Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at his home. He was 68.
He was born in Chickamauga to the late Thomas Chapman Gordy and Mary Alice Foster Gordy. He was a lifelong resident of the northwest Georgia area. He was co-owner of Gordy roofing where he and his brother have roofed for more than 40 years. He was a member of Chattanooga Valley Church of Christ where he had enjoyed serving in the shut-in ministry, taking care of maintenance and any other ministries he could serve in.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Faye Pedigo Gordy; siblings, Sarah Ella Williams, John Thomas Dodd, R.C. Dodd, John Dodd, Argen Dodd, Betty West, Cleve Blevins and Joyce Rogers.

He worked for American Lava, 3M and GE for 35 years, retiring from GE, and enjoyed gardening and going to flea markets. He retired from Hav-A-Tampa Cigar and Chattanooga Glass Company, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially, camping and cooking out.

Evelyn Linder Stephens of Chattanooga died Thursday, January 31, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was 84.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Grady Lee Stephens; her father and mother, Sam and Myrtle Linder; four brothers and three sisters.
A native of Chattanooga, she obtained her associates degree from Edmondson School of Business and worked at TVA for many years. She was previously a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was then a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She was the #1 Big Orange fan and even met Peyton Manning! She knew no strangers and was loved by all who knew her. Her sense of humor, sharp wit and entertaining skill were second to none. She brightened the day wherever she went.
Survivors include her daughter, Janet and partner Vicki Bond; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Babs, son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Leslie; niece, Anita Robinson and her husband David; four grandchildren, Holley, Miles, Leah and Austin. Survivors include her parents, Eddie and Brenda Cobb Osborne of Chickamauga; husband, Bobby Gribble of Chickamauga; their daughters and sons-in-law, Erica Mashon and Doug Guthrie of Flat Rock, Ala., Tabitha and Kevin Roach of Chickamauga, Shana Welch of Chatsworth; son, Charles Richard Newsom of Stevenson, Ala.; brother and sister-in-law, Eddie and Janie Osborne, Jr. of Rossville; grandchildren, Alexis Mashon Guthrie, Krista Nichole Guthrie, Hailey Newsom, Dakota Roach, Alyssa Newsom, Draven Newsom, JoAnna Newsom, J.J. Robinson, Sadie M. Gribble; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial service: Saturday, Feb. 2, at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Minister Dwight Wilson officiating. Visitation: Saturday, Feb. 2, from 1-3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Billy Douglas Morrison, 78, Chickamauga
Billy Douglas “Cotton” Morrison died Wednesday, January 30, 2013, from natural causes at his home. He was 78.
A life-long resident of Walker County, he was born November 18, 1934, in Chickamauga, the son of the late James Lorence Morrison and Emma Abraham Morrison.
He was preceded in death by all of his siblings, Bennie Robert Morrison, Mabel Morrison Matthews, Mayo Morrison Taylor, James L. Morrison and Roy L. Morrison.
Known as Cotton to his friends and family, he was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church for over 45 years, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon and Trustee. Known for his love of people, golf, boating and fishing, he was a 1953 graduate of Gordon Lee Memorial High School. He served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1960, acquiring the rank of Specialist 4th Class. In 1987, he retired after 31 years of work as an electrician through I.B.E.W. Local #175. In the 1960s, he was a Boy Scout leader for the Explorers group in Chickamauga. He was a charter member and past president of the Mended Hearts Association, Chattanooga Chapter, as well as a past member, secretary and vice president of the Chickamauga Lions Club. For 10 years, he served as chairman of the annual golf tournament sponsored by the Gordon Lee Memorial High School Alumni Association. In 1999, he and his wife were awarded the Roy Gilstrap Alumni Support Award as Distinguished Alumnus from the Gordon Lee Memorial High School Alumni Association for their years of service to the school.
Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Claudette Johnson Morrison; daughter and son-in-law, Amelia (Jim) Morrison Hipps of Lebanon, Tenn.; and several nieces.
Graveside services: Friday, Feb. 1, at 3 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at the Morrison Family Plot in Ascalon, on Lookout Mountain with Dr. Warren Moorhead officiating. Visitation: Friday, Feb. 1, from noon-2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Pallbearers: Darren Caldwell, Trey Deck, Don Howard, Ronnie Johnson, LeRoy Matthews, Roy Parrish Jr., Marvin Shelley and David Wood.
