A LaFayette man was arrested for driving under the influence and being a habitual violator of traffic laws.

According to the Walker County Sheriff’s Office:

Robert Kirkland Gravitt, 67, of West Main Street in LaFayette was arrested on Jan. 13 for driving under the influence and several other offenses.

It is the fifth DUI he has received in the past seven months, according to police records.

Deputies noticed a swerving vehicle driving at 4:39 p.m. along U.S. 27 near Pearl Drive in Rock Spring.

Gravitt admitted that he had been drinking as he gave his identification to deputies.

He “nearly stumbled into a traffic land and was very unsteady” as he exited the vehicle to speak with officials, according to the report.

Gravitt took only one step during the “heel-to-toe” test before officers stopped the test for his safety.

His Breathalyzer test registered a 0.149 blood-alcohol level.

He was charged with misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, improper lane change, open container and habitual violator, which applies to those convicted three previous times of a traffic offense during a five year period.

Gravitt was released on a $3,370 bond.

According to OCGA code 40-5-58, he would be fined a minimum of $750 and/or a one- to five-year jail sentence as a result of the habitual violator status.
