A man who was arrested Friday night for disorderly conduct hung himself in the Walker County jail.

According to Sheriff Steve Wilson:

A Rossville man who was arrested by the Rossville Police Department Friday night on a charge of disorderly conduct, and lodged in the Walker County Detention Center, was found in his cell, hanging by his T-shirt, at 2:20 a.m. Saturday.

Detention officers and EMTs immediately began life-saving procedures on the inmate, 36-year-old Charles Lee Cochran. Efforts to resuscitate Cochran were unsuccessful and he was declared deceased by medical personnel.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death.

The body has been transported to the GBI crime lab in Decatur for an autopsy.

Cochran was arrested following a domestic dispute with his neighbor, Rossville Police Department detective Dave Scroggins said. Cochran was being disorderly, arguing and using profanity, in public, against his neighbor, Scroggins said.

I am a family member, but you know I just want to say I have a friend who's son is in the walker county jail and he said he heard something and also he said he knows one detention officer that hits on some inmates and he knows of one detention officer that slammed an inmates head up against the wall, so all I am saying there is alot of wrong doing in that jail and its not just this it has come from inmates and also other people that i know, and i have read where walker county jail is being investigated now from a Birmingham Alabama man dying in the walker county jail.

@eagle31

i am saying just wait for results and if it is not good enough for the family,then go forward.

they or you will have a lot of people looking to make a dollar from this,so just be careful.

if you are a family member.

do not talk to anyone until they say it is a FREE interview,and do not sign anything.

anonymous just what do you mean by not too fast or we may give up more than a family member.
« anonymous wrote on Thursday, Nov 12 at 02:20 PM »
@eagle31

if it was one of my family members i would want results,i would want to see all the facts and then decide what to do not say this looks like we need to call the ACLU or any other group who needs some more air time.

this family needs to find out what happened,and then take action,not to fast or they may give up more than a family member.$$$$

I would like to say that no one is sue happy, this isn't about money, it is about justice being served. Money isn't going to bring a family member back, so before anyone starts making remarks like that just think about if it was your family member wouldn't you want justice served?

@liberty1066

good point.

just like bebe creating a job for a mullis and paying him the salary that would cover wages of three officers for a entire year.

or local leaders cutting back on spending for the battered kids home so they could have a halloween party.

this county is very GOOD AT WASTEFUL SPENDING,then cutting jobs of some who do really work hard at what they do.

What a tragedy it would be to raise taxes to save lives in desperate need of saving,that would be unthinkable.However we hold private establishments responsible for the safety of their patrons and that is enforced by fear of lawsuits and other penalties.So I suppose goverment is held to a different standard?If the manpower is not to par then measures must be taken to ensure this incident never happens again in the future.And furthermore the man died in POLICE CUSTODY therefor they are responsble for his wellbeing that is a fact.But we are willing to spend tax dollars to take life such as military spending but reluctunt to do the same to save lives.This just goes to show you the true nature of human beings.

LOCAL2009

it doesnt have to be a 24 hour watch..this happened between 10:00pm and 2:00am

OFFICERS are the ones supposed to be on the streets..

THE ONES WHO WORK IN THE JAIL IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE WATCHERS..and they are plenty of workers in the jail.

and TRUST me they aint gonna spend more money to hire ANYBODY

they put no monet towards anythingg good

@LIBERTY1066

Please tell me of a jail or prison that has the man power to put a 24/7 watch on all inmates.

If you have all of your staff watching those who are in jail who will protect your streets.

Are should we spend more tax dollars hiring more staff and give you a chance to talk about wasteful spending.Let them finish the investigation first.

I may be out of line,but you sound like a sue happy person.

I am sorry prometheusX303 it was just the way it was said because there are so many lies that have been told about this whole thing, but I know he was a good person.

I don't know what PrometheusX303 is trying to assume but Charles did drink alchol but he never stole from anybody and he helped anybody that he could. <<

I am not "trying to assume" anything. I was pointing out that when a person is intoxicated or on drugs, their personality is not the same as when they are sober.
