The Walker County Historical Society met at the Walker County Library, LaFayette Oct. 25 with 18 present.

Dr. David Boyle, vice-president called the meeting to order. Minutes of the September meeting were read by Jennie Chandler and approved. Francis Cobb gave the treasurer’s report with a balance of $3527.32 in checking, which was also approved. Francis explained that the subscription to the National Parks Conservation Association was due. There was a consensus to renew.

Old business: David had announced that the annual business meeting would be Nov. 29, 2009 which is the fifth Sunday. After some discussion, it was agreed to hold the meeting at the regular time, the fourth Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009. David called on Joan Trundle to introduce the speaker, Lavonne Jolley, her personal friend. Lavonne presented slides and commentary on the history of the Chattanooga area from the Paleo period to the present, including highlights from North Georgia, Northeast Alabama and Southern Tennessee. She gave some special insight Chattanooga Valley history and into the four generations of Pattens who lived at Ashland in Chattanooga Valley. Ms. Jolley also presented a notebook of articles and photographs of the families related to the Ashland Estate.

In the spring, there will be a tour for the Society at this privately owned historic house. The grounds are famous for the acres of jonquils which bloom in the spring.
